Our first stop after Mysore was Hampi, a fascinating place, historically, geographically, and culturally. The official reason people go to Hampi is to see the amazing and plentiful remains of historic structures. Much of southern India was ruled from here about a thousand years ago (that's the very approximate time period). The area was once a big city complex, and the well-kept remains of the city structures spread out of several square miles. There are so many unbelievable temples, palaces, ancient shopping bazaars, and other remnants of a very proposerous era to be seen. We took a guided tour and saw as many as we could, until we were completed saturated with images of Shiva, scenes from the Ramayana, and marvels of stone construction and carving. I have never seen a place like Hampi: hills upon ... read more

So a local bus took us from Hospet to Hampi, a holy city declared patrimony of humanity. This is a city located in the middle of a huge amount of stony boulders that makes it look like a Flintstone movie set! It used to be capital of some old Indian empire so it’s surrounded by ruins of temples, palaces and statues that gives it a very interesting look. Hampi is a town divided in two by a river, on one side you find all the temples and ruins, and on the other there were a lot of hostels with nice and relaxed bars attached to it (The best place to hang out). Since the cheaper accommodation was on the temple side, we were forced to cross the river everyday, and to do that we were supposed ... read more

Boulders, ruins and hammocks.............sounds good to me! We got to Hampi after nearly 30 hrs of trains and travel, (not all hardship as along the way we had some of the best tandoor chicken.. and a few beers). Alas, we got to Hampi too late to find a place to stay so the four of us slept on the floor of a rooftop restaurant for the night! Ordered some late night samosas, and they came with green chili sauce. I love this stuff. It is a potato/chili sauce from Bhutan. Surprisingly, not a bad sleep at all! Actually I think it is the way to travel, you just wake up and order breakfast.. perfect! In the morning we crossed the river to the other side of Hampi and found little bungalows and called them home for ... read more

India! Hmmm, I am pretty slow at writing a travel blog. I did write a really really long one last week, then bam, the Internet fucked and I lost it all. This was some what energy draining and I haven't been able to face writing another one! where to start in describing my experiences, what I've seen, how I feel, what it is like here. Its some what overwhelming, as it is all so different. And where to start?? I guess, at the beginning would be a good idea. Brother sam(ius) and I arrived in to Mumbai, tired. After a journey lasting over 26 hours. We set off from cold, snow covered Berlin. And arrived into crazy Mumbai. Upon arriving into the airport I was so so tired. But my eyes where wide open trying to ... read more

I had just two weeks left in India and was torn between whether to stay north and see more of the forts and palaces of Rajasthan or head south - I'd met heaps of people who'd raved about the south and how different it was and I was keen to see it for myself. In the end what tipped it was probably visiting the fort at Kumbalgarh - I really didn't think anything would be able to top it. But then as it turned out I found I actually preferred the north! I started in Goa, well Panjim really - I wasn't too bothered about the beaches (half a day at Calangute was more than enough to make me want to run back north - it was a case of spot the local amongst all the ... read more

Our trip to Hampi is the first one of mine out of Hyderabad. it was a weekend trip between 16th- 19th Jan 2009. we took a bus which became an adventure in a few hours. it was a very old bus but the most comfortable one ever bcoz of its wide seats. anyway, around 12 o clock at night when i opened my eyes i suddenly saw our crash to a yellow track. after that we kept going for 2 minutes till whole front glass was smashed to smithereens. i am not sure about the reason we crashed that our crazy driver tried to avoid something from our side of the road and shifted other side which track was coming OR he was sleepy and didnt realize the road in dark night.. the most incredible thing ... read more

We arrived in Hampi at 4am to find all the hotels full or shut. Thankfully it was a warm night so Tracy and I snuck into a hotel courtyard and slept on their benches, pulling blankets over our faces to keep the mosquitoes away. The hotel turned out to be a bit of a dump so we left at 9am to find somewhere better. At least we got a free nights 'accommodation' out of it! After a hearty breakfast we set out to explore Hampi's boulder strewn ruins. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, we found ourselves alone as we climbed through deserted temples, and I lived out my Indiana Jones fantasies. It was wonderful to hear the wind blowing through palm trees and the singing of wild budgerigars. No car horns, ... read more

So we left our beach hut in Patnem Goa kicking and screaming. It was hard as we loved it so much there. It was so laid back. We decided to get a train to Hampi which is about 10 hrs inland. Ourselves and a friend from Goa, David, got the train by day accross to Hampi. It was a good decision. The scenery was great all the way accross and just like with owld Iarnród Éireann at home you could open the carriage door of the train, traveling at 100 miles an hour and feel the wind in your face and wave to all the village kids as you passed through. After the 6th fly hit me in the same eye i decided to take my enthusiasm back to the seat i had paid for and ... read more

Casten ofzo? Vanaf de grens ... read more

We arrived in Mysore in the early afternoon. After a quick bite to eat we headed to Mysore’s main attraction, the Maharaja’s palace. It was amazing, completely over the top in every way possible. The attention to detail inside was incredible and the whole palace was an almost foolish display of wealth. From the kaleidoscope of colours in the stained glass windows (I stole that line from the lonely planet, it just fits so perfectly), to intricately carved doors inlaid with ivory or gold, to roof to floor paintings, to mosaic floors, it was absolutely amazing. Shame photos were prohibited inside though, as it was truly breathtaking. While in Mysore we also checked out the Devaraja Markets. The markets were a colourful display of fruit, vegetables, spices, flowers, kumkum (colours) and interesting characters. This was exactly ... read more
