Hampi! We’ll open this blog entry with a report from the Death Bus. It turned up an hour late at Mapusa (obviously) to take us to the old town of Hampi. We’d booked an overnight sleeper bus that was to take 11 hours but took around 17… After boarding the bus and being allocated our ‘cell’ we realized this would be a long journey. We had a ‘bed’ on the top row right at the front of the bus which gave us a good view of all the driver’s antics... This came with a window that literally fully opened onto the road below. We’ve realized there are no health and safety regulations in India. Funny with hindsight but at the time you can find yourself longing for the organization and safety of the western world! My yoga stretched body and newly discovered emotions, where finally ready on the 17th to take a night bus from Panalum to Hampi. The 14hour bus ride began in an old bus station at 10pm, backpacks on and snacks at the ready, me and my friend (still a bit bitter, haha) embarked on a journey from hell! Well not hell, hell but hellish. We had chosen reclining seats instead of sleeper, my choice after nearly flying out a widow in an upper sleeper last year. Half way done the bus, bumps wern't the problem, it was more the sounds of the horn and the engine which powered along as if it used to power a roket. I slept very little, woke up very cold and was extremely disorientated when we jumped of for a pee and ... read more

Indian Trains. We love them. In our time here we have taken short hops in A/C chair class, slept (on the whole very well) on the sleepers and squeezed and shoved our way in to stand in the general seating section. We had yet another different experience on the Margao-Hospet train. On the morning of departure we had no ticket, and so queuing for a standard seat was the only option. Evidently one of the most popular routes in India there were already people hanging out the doors when the train pulled in. So when the empty luggage carriage stopped in front of us we hopped in. It was very spacious, if a little hard on the old posterior. We waved goodbye to a bemused Durks, and 8 long hours later we arrived in Hampi. It was ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm checking in as we continue our adventures through the sunny south. After our decadent houseboat experience in Alleppey we spent another day there, then hopped a couple of trains (including an overnighter) that got us to the city of Mysore (via Bangalore). We had an action-packed couple of days there. We managed to fit in a couple of trips to the legendary bustling market, part of an utterly incomprehensible but still interesting cricket match, an afternoon at the impressive (yet at the same time kind of sad) zoo, and a walk through the amazing Mysore palace. Another highlight was seeing the palace lit up at night by 96,000 lights. We also went to the horse races one day - an impromptu 'plan b' after we found that the bird santuary we had planned ... read more

Geo: 15.3333, 76.4667Happy New Year from Hampi, and what a nice place to celebrate a new decade.Well after a week and a bit in Goa, we had to leave, so we caught the train to Hospet which is only 14km away from Hampi. The train ride was quite nice and unexpected. Carole and Myself couldn't get two seats together let alone in the same carriage, but i ended up sitting next to Chuck from New York who was part of a big group (Around 150 from all over the world, Archeologists, Professors etc.) who were celebrating the 30th anniversary of some excavation. And because i was sitting with Chuck i managed to get some free snacks because they thought i was part of the group. We had a Thali on the train for lunch and seeing ... read more

9 hours on a Government bus later.... (Government being a public bus, the cheap alternative but a pretty decent ride)... and we arrived in Hospit where we jumped on a rickshaw a trundled to Hampi, where we spent the week roaming around in awe of the amazing scenery! Hampi is like no other place I have been... at times I really felt as if I were in a film set and that dinosaurs may roam into my vision, they really would of fitted in! The village is in the middle of 15th century ruins of the old town of Vijayanagar, so ruined temples and walls stretch out far amongst the brilliant landscape of giant granite boulders, paddies and banana plantations. Very little has changed since in the landscapes appearance, even the village of Hampi hasn't developed ... read more

When you are traveling there are so many stories shared about where to go when and who with and how much. We had both heard so many good things about the magic and mystery of Hampi that we decided to get out there and have a little look ourselves. After the most relaxing week in Goa - chilling on the beaches of Arambol we decided to leave our wonderful little beach hut nestled in the palms right on the beach and take one sweaty little mission to Mapusa to get the bus to Hampi! The taxi driver takes us to the main square where the buses arrive. There is no real bus stand its more like a stretch of dust and you are lucky if the right bus comes to the right place least of all ... read more

Friday, Oct 30th, Hampi - Karnataka This morning was the first time in forever, that we took a yoga class. It was different, but not bad. Weird introduction… Whatever. We arrived in Hampi yesterday morning after a 14 hour bus ride. It was fun, but also totally exhausting. It was a sleeper bus, so picture this like a bus with a ton of bunk beds inside. Ok, if you ever decided you wanna take a bus in India, make sure, you didn’t have recent abdorminal surgery, you are pregnant, suffering from hernia, have any ulcers (sorry, inside joke ) No, seriously, it’s VERY BUMPY and shaky. But - we made it!!! We met some really nice guys from Sweden, one of them has been in Hampi twice already, so we kinda decided to follow them. So ... read more

Hampi is a very cool little place indeed. It’s famous for its ancient ruins and I thought we may have been headed to some predictable tourist set-up a couple of kays away from some olllld shiz, but not so. The locals here have literally set up shop (school, home etc.) smack bang in the middle of towering mountains of the oldest boulders in the world, and the richest archeological site in India. We did a bike tour of the town. Just us with a guide cause its low season, to check out some of the best stuff. The rest we explored on foot. It’s amazingly peaceful, with tiny little cobbled streets, practically no cars or bikes, surrounded by banana plantations and 3 thousand temples dating back to the 15th century. Hampi was a great change after ... read more
