Settling into Bhuj local and localised life is good, actually it is great. I love hopping on the mo ped (or in India they call it the Activa) and taking myself off to buy fruit and veg, visiting and just feeling a little more free. My time in Bhuj is coming to an end where we will be travelling to Ahmedabad for the annual kite festival and simultanously the Vibrant Gujurat Summit. I am sure lodging with passionate citizens of Gujurat we will be visiting the site and activities that go with such a showcase for the state. Then off to Vadodara for the love marriage of hardik and Kunjan. I will add photos when I can. Take care Tess Avju x0... read more

Namaste all Where to begin is always a challange when many events have happened and access to internet is very rare. Go figure in India and accessing reliable internet and coordinating oneself with Indian family members whom don't hold the same importance of my contact outside their Indian family life. Mostly it is great to have Sonnelben's wonderful chai again. After walking each morning with morning prayer echoing in the distances Sonnelben greets me with the best tea on this earth. Full of ginger and pepper and the sweetest milk. It really kick starts your day. Took a whirlwind trip north of India to Shimla and Manali all with its beauty but ugliness as well with Indian tourists and their bad habits of filth and rubbish. It was an amazing sight to witness the Himalayan peaks ... read more

Yesterday we got up early to check out of our prime room and headed out on a MP3 guided walking tour of the old city. We felt like proper tourists with headphones on gazing up at the buildings. The tour took us from an old mansion past a really old mosque with beautiful carved windows along past some British art deco to the old town fort. At the fort the tour started to really prove fantastic as it directed us into a tiny courtyard, up a flight of stairs through as office and up to the top of the old fort. We were a little apprehensive about trespassing but the voice on the player said don't be scared you are allowed. The top of the fort was spectacular with views across the city and an amazing ... read more

In the afternoon we headed off to book a sleeper train out of town and decided to try to get to the nearest wetland bird sanctuary. We walked over tho the nearest taxi stand and guys ran from everywhere to discuss our trip. After a lengthy discussion they told us it was over 100 kilometres away. At this point we pointed to the brochure where it says just 25 km from Ahmedabad and they went back into rushed discussion before agreeing that we were quite correct. Feeling confident we were on the same page we agreed on a round trip price and set off. Unfortunately our drivers confidence waned as we got out of the city and he got increasingly concerned that we may be lost eventually we turned around at a small village and back ... read more

This morning we arrived in Ahmedabad via the sleeper train from Mumbai. We are a little cross eyed and hungry but excited to be here. As we arrived so early (6.30 am) very little is open so we are yet to get breakfast. The train was quite a good experience (our expectations were not high!) and we both got quite a bit of sleep in our tiny bunks. We also caught our first auto rickshaw into town to find a hotel. We are now off to explore the city and hopefully see some of the kite festival that is supposed to be on this month. It is quite cool here and we were suprised to find everyone dressed in jackets, scarves and beanies, it is not really Canberra weather!... read more

Yes we are just NOW packing. We are last minute people, you know. We have about a week and a few days until we leave and packing is just a mess. Aside from mine, Arya's and Nikki's bags we also have bags with goodies for the family. I dont even want to know what the baggage fees will cost once we weigh our bags at the airport. Anyway, I set up this blog so that once I am in India I can post what is going on, what I am doing, etc. I am excited to go but a little nervous as you all might guess. I hope to post a "post" every day or every other day and put pictures and videos on here too. Feel free to post comments or to email me at ... read more

Asia » India » Gujarat » Vadodara October 21st 2008

Vadodara was known as Baroda formerly When I started to write about our recent trip to Vadodara, I found to my delight that the venerable ‘Vatvriksha’ became a mundane ‘Banyan’ tree in English language because early British found that the Hindu Gujrati ‘Banias’ (merchants) mostly conducted their business in the shade of these trees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banyan Whenever I start writing a travelogue, a gather from the Net many such nuggets of what Avi calls “Profuse and Useless Information”. So, dear readers, like Avi, if you are interested only in ‘short and useful’ information, please refer to a travel guide. Vadodara, at present is a small town in Gujrat. It was the seat of princely state of Maharajah Gaekwad till 1947. What progress Vadodara has shown today is due to a very able ruler Sayajirao Gaekwad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maharaja_Sayajirao_Gaekw... read more

Wieder Mal sleeper, diesmal aber 2 AC (also Bonzen Abteile) in Udaipur angekommen. Darueber spaeter. Laut LP "a trip from hell", die 7 stuendige Busfahrt inklusive Unsteigen. Wir bekomme... read more

Daher Weiterfahrt postponed. An Papa: Keine Sorgen machen!! Jahrhundert.
