The landscape in the Little Raan Sanctuary is harsh and extreme. For eight months of the year it's a desert of cracked, crusty mud - a flat expanse of nothingness stretching as far as the eye can see. Confronted with such a landscape it's easy to see how people believed it was possible to fall off the edge of the earth. Featureless, colourless, a country-scape to drive a person mad. Occasionally, a bet (elevated plateaus which rise to about three meters) provides eye candy. Heat mirages hover on the horizon. Vast lakes appear out of nowhere, shimmering in the sun's glare. The emptiness is unrelenting. Imagine living in such a place. The area is punctuated by desolate salt farms where Agarias - salt pan workers - belonging to the Chuwaliakolis caste (which comes under the backward ... read more

Ahmedabad and Diu. How to describe this city? Located in the Gujarat, Ahmedabad is mainly a Muslim city; you can hear the call to the prayer every day. A very interesting fact is that most of the mosque has some elements of both religions: Hindu and Muslim, due to the Sultan Mahmud Begara that married a Hindu wife, the result is very interesting. We also went to the Hatheesingh Temple, which is absolutely beautiful, built in 1848, for the religion of Jain, a branch of the Hinduism, I learn that they are vegan and they eat a very limited quantity of vegetable to preserve life, this is definitely not for me. Other than that the city is very crowded, streets are smalls and the smog is just everywhere, the pollution is omnipresent due to the chemical ... read more

India is a country of workshops. Most Indian ladies buy fabric and get a tailor to make up garments specifically for them rather than buying 'ready made'. I decided to follow suit. On the recommendation of our guesthouse manager I went to look for "Bandhej" a shop well known for it's bandhani or tie-dye fabrics - a speciality of the area. Tie-dye is a simple but time consuming process. Material is folded in half several times until it becomes a small square or rectangle. A design is then marked on the cloth using a wooden block. A bandhani crafts person, who purposely allows the thumb and forefinger nail to grow long for use as a pair of pincers, ties the marked areas into tiny knots. The motifs (indicated by the block) are tied with thread so ... read more

Finding ourselves in Ahmedabad, capital of Gujarat, for twenty four hours we tooka whistle stop tour of sights far and near with the local tuk tuk driver who lived next to the homestay we were in. An ancient haveli restored with French money through the Municipal corporation. The best value meal ever we consumed at the Gujarat run hotel opposite Gandhi's Ashram. Which impressed me most? The peace of the ashram and the history of Gandhi and his movement outlined on story boards, seeing his simple abode or the $1.10 full meal? Those of you knowing my eye for a bargain will probably be able to answer that one. We walked down an ancient step well finding intricate carvings and cool shade. Coming south the weather was certainly warming up. We followed another dusty road to ... read more

Update: I am sad to report that our friend Hitesh Barot was killed by a crocodile in this river just a few years after we visited him. Here is a link about that if you would like to learn more. http://spicyip.com/2014/06/remembering-hitesh-barot.html Kim and I spent the last three days in Bhalod, Gujarat, India. Bhalod is about 2 hours by car from Vadodara. We went to visit our friends Hitesh and Nimisha Barot there. They live three blocks from us in New Delhi and invited us to their village in Gujarat where much of Hitesh's extended family still lives. Hitesh was born in the USA and grew up in Huntington Beach, so he is as American as Apple Pie, but he moved to New Delhi so his sons could get a feel for living in India. Hitesh’s ... read more

We headed towards Somnath Jyotirlinga temple. Somnath temple one of most important Lord Shiva temple. The history of this temple is a true proof of the Glory of India in past. Before rise of west india was richest country in the world. Christopher Columbus landed in 1492 in West Indies when he tried to reach india from west. There where specialist persons who made maps in britain who were finding sea route to reach golden land of india. Richness of Indian land have attracted Mugals, portugese and britshers. How did india became worlds richest country then? This also raises questions as to how was journey of indian civilization from apes to worlds richest country. If the temples of india were so rich, how rich would be the citizens of india in those period. Somnath is the place which ... read more

Hello friends.. Finishing our office work on tuesday evening bit early, we 4 friends gathered at borivali station in mumbai to catch 9005 saurashtra mail at around 9:15 pm. Train tickets were not confirmed yet, so i was continously checking PNR status on my HTC GPRS. The train arrived on platform, we got in and possessed our sits and said to ourself-finally we are on our way to Junagadh.. As usual as it happens in train journey, tea sellers got us up in morning. We were passing through viramgam, lakhtar area. I was surprised to see huge fields of Cotton on both sides of railway track and that to for 3-4 hours..Most of the stations on this route looked newly built though small is size. Although as per my knowledge this train route is atleast ... read more

Well here goes, first entry on my travelblog. Not sure who I'm writing this for just yet, ie you my merry audience, so maybe i'll write for myself and see how things pan out. The unforgettable smell of hot humid tarmac that is Bombay airport. Ingrained in my memory. Only this time the air conditioning is so efficient inside even the domestic terminal that waiting all night for the mornings connecting flight was cold. Not an experience i had expected on my round the world adventure seeking warmer climes - I had to put my woolly sox on. And no, before you ask no i dont have a picture of me at Bombay airport with my woolly sox! A week on the Vadi. For those that dont know this is the farm my grandparents started in ... read more

So Mt. Abu is beautiful and full of Indian couples on thier honeymoons and on family holidays, so there isn't too much poverty here as it is obviously for the slightly richer side of life up here, they sell wippy ice cream which is flavoured by a big squidgy dollop of syrup ontop, quite nice but sickening too! went on a few walks upto a big rock called toad rock ( for its looks like a toad about to leap into the lake) and then to honeymoon point which has the most amazing views and hurrendous drops! As people are holidaying they all want to take a photo of you or with you, which you should be able to decline if you don't want to be in the photo, but this seemed to fill them with ... read more
