Aaah I finally find the time to write again! After spending some colourful and noisy weeks in some of Saurashtra's finest cities. We are now relaxing into a slower pace of life in Jainabad, on the outskirts of the Gujerati salt desert, the Raan of kutch. This place is beautiful, just what I need....and the children love it too, which is a bonus; they immediately felt at home here! Some good and clean fresh air, peppered with lashings of hot sun, surrounded by lush greenery, cactii and thorny bushes, home to kingfishers, a family of peacocks, a flame backed woodpecker and even a black cobra (which Akashi spotted this morning, a bite kills in 20 minutes flat!) But back to where we left off last time, Sasan Gir.....we ventured into the gujerati jungle, a 2 ... read more

Dear Readers, Greetings from Kutch Adventures India Exploring Chinkara (gazelle bannettis) Sanctuary in Lakhpat-Kutch with my 2 cousins, Neerav and Chetan, on motorbike which was our best companion to take us through forest area. Let me define the word Forest in Kutch. It means nothing but 8-10 ft. tall bushes of local Kutchi vegetations found in wilder area where Chinkaras lives beside other animals such as Blue bulls, Jackals, Hares, Mongoose and Wild boars and protected by Gujarat Forest Department. Ironically Government allowing cements factories and thermal power plants to establish their businesses around this sanctuary to let them make money and pollute environment and cornered these species in smaller area gradually. They says it’s “Development” while environmentalists calls it “Destruction” The idea was to pass across... read more

25 degrees in the winter, now THIS is what i'm talking about! Can't quite believe that we've made it here, first day or two felt like I was tripping...me and akashi and shivum, finally in india, i feel like we're strong enough to take on the world! The reaction of most of the indians i spoke to in the UK about our forthcoming trip was 'You, alone, with the kids in India...are you crazy?!' Well, that first day arriving into the noisy and polluted sensory overload that is Delhi, I thought that maybe i am crazy....After an amusing journey to our hotel from the airport (akashi- 'mum, there are cows on the road, mum that car doesnt have a door!!!!' shivum - 'but where are the spitting cobras and pigs and kingfishers and monkeys and crocodiles?!'), ... read more

On the way home from Udaipur I decided to take a detour and spend two nights at Camp Zainabad (aka Desert Coursers) on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. 'Rann' means desert, 'Kutch' is the area, and at nearly 5000sq km it is 'little' only in comparison to the 'great' rann located further towards Pakistan. The area is the last habitat of the Asiatic Wild Ass, but I was more interested in the landscape. It is dead flat, and turns into a marshland during the monsoon, broken only by a few small islands or 'bhets'. But the rains haven't conformed this year and the desert was still spongey from flooding in early November. About 20,000 families live in the desert during the dry season, barely reaping a living from salt panning. Other families raise ... read more

Leaving Ahmedabad I feel excited and relieved at the same time. Relieved because we’re going back to calm and order. You may not think that Johannesburg is calm and orderly most times, but once you’re experienced the streets of India, anything else will seems tranquil. This week I found myself seeking the quiet and cleanliness of our hotel room. The day overwhelmed my senses and left me exhausted every night. We filled our days with some touring of ‘Step Well’, which is a 5 story ‘walk-in’ well, and a tour of Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashram where his ashes are scattered. Our driver was much obliging, pulling over on the side of the road allowing me to take a photo of a camel pulling a bogie (trailer). We spent the afternoon looking at apartments in an area called ... read more

I'm in Ahmedabad now. I don't know if it's the fact that I finally left the state of Rajhastan, or the fact that I am hanging out with my London friend Fernando, or the effort I made to stay positive to attract more positivity - I firmly believe in this - but finally things seem to have turned for the better. Yesterday I had a great day hanging around the city with Fernando. The highlight was visiting a fort, whose name I don't even remember, and sharing tea and a laugh with the government officers who were working there. They hardly spoke any English but were ever so friendly. Then at night we went to a CS meeting and finally saw CS as it should be - friendly people wanting to socialise and do things as ... read more

After a few days in Mumbai we decide to head up North to Bhuj. Brecht, the Belgium guy we met at the Bollywood studios comes with us. He's so laid back, will stop and talk to anyone and get's a lot of attention being 6ft 9 and looking like Peter Croutch!! The three of us catch a taxi to Bandra train station. The roads are packed and we still can't get over how people drive here. The taxi weaves in and out of the traffic hooting his horn at any bike, rickshaw or cow that gets in his way. Brad's in the back nearly hyperventilating with every second word beginning with 'F'!!! As we approach the train station we pass the smell of the slums which takes your breath away, even the taxi driver covers his ... read more
