One of the longest hotel corridors must be located in Jamnagar at the Ashiana hotel and our room was at the end of this mile long hallway... But you can say it was worth the walk, it was a big spacious room and with a view of what could have been a nice park, were it not for the usual piles of garbage... Instead it was a haven for mosquitos! Jamnagar was where Tori was going to leave us to go back to Calcutta and fly home... Knowing her love for birds, we decided to go to Khijadiya bird sanctuary the last day before she left. Tori was in her element, sneaking around, blending in with the birds... We on the other hand were like elephants compared to her... We wisely decided to retreat into one ... read more

First of all, Happy New Year to all of you! Now I have got that out of the way, it is time to tell a bit about our New Years celebrations in Diu... It all started with Tori and I picking up my parents from Diu airport... A very small airport it is, and we were not allowed inside the grounds... No we had to wait outside the gates... But soon after the plane landed Tori spotted my mother running out of the arrival hall waving frantically at us! They had arrived! I had been looking forward to seeing them since I knew they were coming over... This is the first time I was taking my parents on a trip in stead of the other way around... So I whisked them in an auto rickshaw to ... read more

The alarm rang at 5:30 a.m. The plan was to leave the house by 6:30. Considering there were 21 of us going on the trip, and half of us had slept at 2 the previous morning, I wasn't expecting us to leave as planned. Miraculously, we were all piled into cars, luggage and all, by 6:45. At that time of the morning, Mumbai's streets are eerily quiet. We raced through the city and were on the freeway in no time. The road stretched endlessly ahead of us. We had to endure a 14-hour drive before arriving at Rann Riders - the cozy resort situated close to the salt desert of Kutch. The ambiance at Rann Riders was amazing! The huts, the gardens, the food ... all were excellent. My favorite part was the tropical outdoor bath ... read more

Just before 2007 ended, I spent a week volunteering for a non-profit organization in Ahmedabad. Manav Sadhna works their magic from a humble corner of the Gandhi Ashram. I can not express all that my heart is feeling after spending too few days with these wonderful people. In such a short span of time, I truly felt the love and warmth they extend to so many hundreds of people whom they interact with on a daily basis. I was welcomed as one of the MS pariwar (family) - it was an incredibly humbling feeling. Across from Manav Sadhna is the second largest slum in India. Over the past 15 years, MS has helped the people living there to install irrigation pipes and sanitation facilities, understand the importance of hygiene, and care for their neighbors no matter ... read more

Jaisalmer - Ahmedabad - Vadodara The bus left Jaisalmer at 5.00pm to Ahmehabad hoping to arrive at its destination by 4.00am the following morning. Before we actually left the station we had the usual tourist con trick which is to charge us for storing the luggage in the boot of the bus (despite having paid probably way over the odds for a ticket in the first place). Normally the charge is only a couple of rupees per bag but it had steadily been climbing and now reached its peak of 20 rupees a bag! That's 50p for both bags! Doesn't sound a lot but a meal can be bought for that so its all relative and by now it's the principle that matters (especially as the government has imposed a foreign tourist tax just to enter ... read more

We decided to take a slight detour from the standard travelers tour of India and head down to southwest Gujarat for a few days. We technically I really wanted to do it and Trish put up with me and all the hassles getting here entailed... Due to the obvious train difficulties we experienced we ended up spending the day at the Amedabad train station and it's vicinity and missed what would have been a chill/relax day in Junagadh. Getting here at 4:30am after a noisy train ride, our first priority was a little more sleep, followed by showers. After that we wasted no time headed over to one of the towns two attractions (for me at least...), the Junagadh Zoo. As many of you may know, I'm a science dork and love zoos. I love any ... read more

I was in Ahmedabad on Friday, 24 Aug 2007, for work and had some free time in the afternoon. I visited the Sabramati Ashram where Mahatma Ghandi lived from 1918 to 1930. It was here that he developed many of his philosophies and coordinated the early stages of India's strugle for independence from the British. On 12 March 1930, Gandhi left the ashram to begin the Dandi March to the Gulf of Cambay to protest the givernment monopolies on the production and sale of salt. He vowed not to return to the ashram until India was free and never again lived here after his departure. The house where he lived as well as his room with its simple furnishings can be visited as can several locations he used for prayer and meditation. There is an excellent ... read more
