I had The wonderful fortune to be invited to yet another family celebration in performing the second ritual of Aaryas of the 16 rituals in all. This took place in a small town, however, still busy and bussling with people going about their daily lives. The town of Dhansura came alive with an influx of population of the Kutch-Kadava Patel Caste to perform the second ritual of the Blessing of the Feotus. We were bestowed by the presence and pravashan (similar to a lecture or sermon) by Swamiji of the Vanprastha Aashram - Gujurat. Although I did not understand Gujurati, I was able to experience the essense of the ritual and be in the moment. Havan was performed as it was in the ritual of the wedding ceremony previously attended in Baroda City. The women dressed ... read more

Sun is shining, what a beautiful day. Back home in Ghandinagar and the day started with a wonderful brisk walk with the M.L.A of Gujurat (Ompriya's Pappa). The tummy is feeling much much better with good old honey on dry toast and porridge and a delicious Indian cup of tea. I am totally converted and in love with Mammas chai tea consisting of crushed ginger, pepper, sugar (of course), tea leaves, water and milk all brewed over the stove to create what can only be described as a sensual heavenly experience down to the last drop. I have also converted a few to oats (porridge). It is such a lovely change to all the spicy filled food that we have been eating as a daily diet for all courses. I love Ghandinagar so much that I ... read more

Yesterday was a very different New Years for me. As we travelled along the Indian road via Rajkot to Gir Forest to see Asiatic Lions I was overcome with illness, like I have not experienced before while traveling here in India. I have struggled at the most to digest all the cooked food and have become at times lethargic and heavy. All the travel books speak of racing to the loo being explosive at both ends, well my struggles have been just trying stay regular as my daily diet in Australia is of raw foods. But yesterday, my body was truly not my own. Every bump in the road aggravated me. I was not able to hold a conversation with anyone and just felt like retreating to another world. When we stopped along the road for ... read more

Today I passed through the Topic of Cancer and saw endless Castor Oil crops..a totally noxious weed in Australia. What an experience to drive over the Kutch Desert toward Little Rann Sanctuary. This place is famous for its birds in the middle of the desert and many migratory birds flock here including Flamingo. But I did not see any of those this time. This place is an amount of water that is left from the monsoon rains that does not evaporate in the middle of the desert. Truly an oasis. Camels, buffalo, herdsman and their goats and sheep come here to drink. The desert was once a big inland river and in 1879 an earthquake diverted the river into Pakistan, hense now a desert. I visited Hodka Village, a kind of eco tourism venture. Local tribes ... read more

I again indulged in horticulture today. I was able to visit a UQ graduate of Gatton Queensland who owns a date plantation in this region of Bhuj. I toured his plantation and saw people at work like I have never seen before. Unlike Australia the work is very laborious. Men and women and their children toil on the farm like an organised society, of which I truly believe Rahaul (the owner) has created. I was so impressed to learn that all the workers and managers live on the plantation. All medical is taken care of, and a teacher (a managers wife) lives on the plantation and takes daily school classes for the children. Rahaul also has worker incentive with bonuses given to each worker who accumulates 300 work free days out of 365 days. Their daily ... read more

Ompriyas family and myself set off for our road trip and exploration of the Kutch region. Our first stop was the Adalaj Step Well. You won't find this in any guide book so far, but it is an amazing place to visit. I'm not one for endlessly looking at architecture, but this place took my breath away. I just loved all the steps and the coolness down to the now unused well. I had the pleasure also of receiving a telephone call from my Australian girlfriend who gave birth to her first baby boy. Congratulations Michelle and Dave and baby Will Patrick. I have a very special gift for him. We then travelled to Lothal and explored the Harrapan civilisation excavated site from about 1600BC. They had amazing town planning and such organised society. What happened ... read more

Xmas was a bit of a non event for us. No meat, no beer but all the curry that a man needs. We did a spot of shopping on our only day off, but apart from that was a pretty quiet day. The week following the conference was great. We could sleep in late, then arrive at school by 9, do a couple of lesson observations, feedback to the teachers about things that they could do better. We were expecting to have more time in the classroom with the children but unfortunately this didn't really occur. We took a couple more insets with various departments of the Raisan School and they were so pleased for us to be there, and welcomed anything that we suggested. As the school is still being built, there are over 500 ... read more

After a seven hour delay at Delhi airport on 23 December 2006 due to fog/smog...you choose!! I landed in Baroda City in the late afternoon, to be greeted by Ompriya my Australian student at University of Queensland Gatton Campus. Gosh she was a site for sore eyes. I just hugged her so tight and cried and cried. I was so relieved to see a familiar face. One of a million as it seems to come, when I was greeted by endless family members at the Baroda home of the grooms parents. Family is pivotal in India I quickly learnt. And not just immediate members. The extension has breadth and depth, each member so reverent to the other, greetings of Namaste and hands in prayer at heart centre. I was overcome with love by strangers, who did ... read more
