Hey all Just on a journey from Mumbai to Udaipur, we couldn't find a direct route so now we're in Ahmedabad for an hour between trains. We had an 8 hour one from Mumbai and now we have a 6 or 7 one to Udaipur, so we'll arrive there very early morning, struggle through to day and see Udaipur, then we don't know completely what we're doing in Rajastan apart from that we have a train from Jaipur to Delhi on the 19th, and we want it to involve a camel trek. It's nowhere near long enough for what it meant to be one of India's states most worth travelling, but I guess you don't have time to see everything. For the last 2 nights in Mumbai we firstly went out to Polly Esthers club, with ... read more

We arrive in Amhedabad at 5am. It is still dark but already warm. We take a rickshaw to the centre and walk to the river as the sun comes up and find somewhere shady for breakfast. After omlettes and fresh lime sodas and reading the local papers, we head out to see the city. Ahmedebad is the capital of the Gujarat state and made itself by being the textile centre of India, so you could say it is the Manchester of India. It is also a city with an interesting history. First thing we see is Dada Hari Wav, an amazing octagonal well on multiple levels. We are shown round a nearby mosque by an old muslim guy, and then walk through some narrow back streets surrounded by small children who take us to see ... read more

Mumbai to AhmedabadSion and Niki Well, the "City of Dust' certainly lives up to its name, its hot, dusty, frantic....but very friendly. They obviously don't get many tourists in Gujarat because everyone wants to meet us, shake our hands and follow us around town...you can't shake them off! We even had two little school boys ask for our autographs today. Its very flattering, but a bit exhausting saying hello to every man, woman, child, cow, donkey, camel and rabid dog on the street. But, beware not to let your guard down too much, because whilst the people of Ahmedabad have a sweet side, it can turn nasty (think Chucky). On our first night we discovered that the beggar kids like to chase after you in hoardes pinching your arms, and throwing rocks at you, maybe they ... read more

When arriving in Baroda, state of Gujarat, we had a bizarre experience right off the bat. While checking in at the hole-in-the-wall hotel office, Randy and the hotel manager were interrupted by a “sadhu” (holy man in search of enlightenment). He was draped a long orange robe and dangling gold jewelry, with a painted face and wild hair. Exactly what happened next remains a mystery since they were speaking in a foreign language, but it went something like this: Sadhu insists manager look through album of naked-sadhu-in-desert photos. Manager protests that he’s busy with customer (Randy). Loud arguing. Manager reluctantly thumbs through photos. Randy pretends not to notice that grown men are discussing naked man photos on desk in front of him. Sadhu performs prayer ritual on manager. Manager begrudgingly complies. Flower petals are thrown and ... read more

We have been here almost 3 weeks, just now getting used to Ahmedabadi life, and now we're getting ready to move on! It will be hard to leave the family that has now become so familiar. We have, over the weeks, continued to spend time with them and occassionally undertake tourist activities. Yesterday was very significant for me - we went back in time, to my dad's youth. We spent a few hours at his old engineering college at Gujarat University and then went to the crazy downtown for a tour of the flat where he grew up. It was unbelievable for me. Despite all that I've seen around the world, I have never seen anything like this - to me, it looked like a movie set! I simply can't describe it - I'll post pics ... read more

Hi! We're having a good time still. We took an adventurous jaunt to Politana, and stayed in a Dharmasala along the way, which is like a Jain monastery. We saw so many temples and we climbed the whole 3200 steps! Our legs are still sore. :) CHeck out the pics.... read more

Hi, friends! Paul and I are in India! We are having a fabulous time. My experience so far has been rich and my senses are near saturation with all the newness. The first thing I notice is the smells. Immediately when our plane landed in Mumbai, I smelt the air and said "This is what India smells like - I remember!" I don't know how to describe it. It's just that there are so many flowers and spices in the air - even in the city - and maybe because the weather is different - I don't know, but it smells thick and rich, with a hint of sandalwood and occassionally spices and veggies mingling in the air.... We are now in Ahmedabad, a pretty large city (in the top 10 of India), where my family ... read more

We departed Udaipur and after a relatively painless daytime bus trip south, we were soon struggling through the hot and dusty streets of Ahmedabad, trying to find some habitable accommodation. This was our penultimate stop before getting to Mumbai and for Thailand in a few days time. First stop was the city museum, a ‘must see’ according the guide book, but when the rickshaw driver had no idea where it was, nor many of the people he asked for directions we started to get suspicious. When we finally found it, it appeared to be a deserted multistory car-park, but to be fair, there was some interesting history about Gandhi and with only 2 other people and the security guard there was no problem getting to see the exhibits. As we were about to leave the ... read more

Our goal in India, for this week is to get to Ajanta Caves from Udaipur. If you've read my last blog, I expressed frustration to the fact that every train for weeks anywhere we want to go is 100% fully booked with no chance of getting on. Frusterated, we tried to change our flight to leave India early, but are finding it impossible to get ahold of Thai Airways in Mumbai, they seemd to change every phone number they have. **shrug** About a week ago we were able to get an overpriced train ticket on the black market from Ahmedabad to Mumbai (Bombay). Luckily in Udaipur we found out we could change our tickets to go from Ahmedabad to Jalgaon. This was welcoming to us because this means we don't have to go to Mumbai twice. ... read more

Ok, this one is for the architects, some of you may find this a little boring but finally I found some interesting buildings of international recognition (please note I am yet to visit the Taj), in the strangest most unexpected city as well. But before we get into the architecture talk, let's just recount the journey to our current destination, Ahmedabad. A grueling 16 and a half bus journey, and mind you not via highway, but the ‘short cut’ being the back end of no-where on a road that doesn’t even class as a dirt track. Now the buses we’ve been traveling on are sleeper coaches, meaning there actual beds on the bus, which is brilliant because you actually get to sleep lying down, far more comfortable than the reclining seats. Further the sleeper beds come ... read more
