Dolazimo do Swaminarayan templa. U centru grada, muk.

Hi From Ahmedebad and Manav Sadhna, I am living in Ahmedebad for the month and working with an NGO called Manav Sadhna, which is an associate of the Ghandi Ashram and is located on the same grounds. Ahmedebad is one of the worst crowded, polluted and slum ridden cities in India.....ah, home. So it has taken me a little while to get grounded enough to write. India is wild, but not safari wild, wild in the way that it makes you realize you have lived your whole life in a whisper and have been surrounded by sterile, cold, panes of glass. India breaks that glass like a full throated note from an opera singer and makes all that shattering sparkle at your feet. Its really something and it has knocked me off my feet again and ... read more

Hello friends! I was on tour of Rann Utsav-biggest festival celebrated by Gujarat Government at Dhordo-Kutch where I was appointed as a Tourist Guide to support tourist from Rotary International Students. They were 50 people in our group we spent most wonderful time in Dhordo. First day we took part in Inauguration of Scalton of Whale, found in Kutch, in Hill Garden Bhuj. That evening we had chance to see dance groups who have taken part in Kutch Carnival which is celebrated for the last 2 years in Bhuj. More than 40 groups taken part with various subject, dresses, music, and that was so splendid! even I could not stop myself from dancing with some of the groups ;-) Next day we went Kalo Dungar" Blake Hill-Highest hill in Kutch from where you can view great ... read more

The Desert:the little Rann Sanctuary is someplace I've always wanted to visit. It is a desert for half of the year with temperatures touching 55 degrees celsius (131 F) with the occasional dust tornadoes. In the monsoon it is completely flooded and becomes a pit stop for millions of migratory birds. We visited in between the two seasons, and yet it was one of the most extreme environments I've ever visited. The endless earth was cracked and blinding white, all around you could see extraordinary mirages and it was quite disorientating. The Indian Wild Ass: The locals of this harsh environment are the indian wild ass, they look more like zebra and move in herds. They are extremely fast with running speeds of up to 70kmph. Seeing herds of these majestic creatures running across the parched ... read more

The city: Gir is the last remaining refuge of the Asiatic lion(about 300 left), the only lions found outside of Africa. The Asiatic species is different from their African cousins in that they don't have prides, the male lion has a less luxuriant mane and hunts for himself. These lions once roamed all over northern India up to Iran and the Indian national emblem features 4 Asiatic Lions. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these elusive beasts on an open jeep safari. The Adventure: After we finished our morning safari my guide told me that it was possible to walk into the lion sanctuary in the afternoon when the lions are lazing around. I was skeptical at first but decided to check it out anyways, and after a monetary "tip" to the park ... read more

The City: Bhuj is on the westernmost edge of India, a small town in the middle of nowhere. It has some interesting architecture but frequent earthquakes make this town feel more like ancient ruins. The Adventure:I decided to trek around in the surrounding hills, so I hired a taxi and we drove further west into the wilderness. We stopped at a place called Than, which is basically an old monastery. I encountered three interesting saadhus, who had no possessions and apparently smoked all day. They invited me in for tea, and in between puffs of smoke they recounted some local legends. Then I took off on my trek, encountered an Indian Hare and plenty of peacocks in the jungle. I even managed (after a lot of practice) to make my own fire. The Ultimate ride:My taxi ... read more

Nicky: That beautiful meal overlooking the lake wasnt so beautiful for long as it kept me up all night, on the train, while I was being sick. I am not going to go into detail just to say that it wasn't pleasant, I am trying not to remember much of it, but I do have vague recollections of launching myself kamakazee style from the top bunk where i was sleeping still wrapped in my sleeping bag, one handed and half shuffling, half running the 50 yards to the toilet (which was barely nice enough to wee in let alone anything else) several times in the night. My bad stomach continued until we arrived in Ahmedabad at 5.30am, while we waited for our next train, all through the journey to Mumbai - which was in what I ... read more

Ahmedabad Well after an average length drive down a dull 4 lane toll freeway we arrived at Ahmedabad. Unfortuantely I came down with the cold on the way and the city air was as bad or worse than Delhi. Out came the N95 anti-viral surgical mask I brought from home which really helped with the breathing! Missed touring both mosques and the large stepped well. No pictures at all worth sharing. Glad to fly on to Mumbai.... read more

The City:Junagadh is a maze of crowded allies and old buildings, atop a hill north of the city lies the Uperkot Fort, which is where Junagadh was first established. Riddled with secret passageways and underground caves the old city seems like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, some passageways are rumored to even lead to Pakistan! My Guide: As I was exploring the city I ran into an intoxicated guy among some bushes, which was surprising since Gujarat is a dry state(no alcohol). A local of Junagadh he enthusiastically showed me around, including the "punishment door" which is a doorway that leads to a 200 foot drop, where in earlier times outlaws were made to walk the plank. Aptly, I got a picture of the guy at the door.... read more

Surat When a train gets delayed they say the schedule is broken. We were scheduled to leave Jalgaon at midday but our Hotel manager said “Your train is coming from Varanasi, that train is always delayed, go to the station and check what time it will arrive before you take your bags.” He was a mine of good information, he’d already supplied hot tips for good restaurants and prices for auto rickshaws, he was right again. Our train was delayed three hours. At first we thought this was a good thing, it cut back the time we would be waiting for our connection at Surat but the clock kept ticking and the train never arrived for another hour. Our second class AC carriage was next to the food cart, mmm yummy Samosa, Chicken lollypop, but given ... read more
