Travellers guide to Goa step 1 - find a nice quiet beach and book a hut step 2 - scope out places to eat cheap fresh seafood and eat it step 3 - scope out places to have a nice few cheap drinks and drink them step 4 - wake up next day, have a swim and repeat steps 2 to 4 for 10 days (maybe hire a scooter one day to really mix it up) What can we say about Goa? We arrived here late on the 23rd after having quite a lot of trouble with our train tickets. We had booked an overnight train from Kollam to Varkala but unfortunately we were on a wait list. What we didn't know was that if we had talked to the supervisor, we could've gotten on the ... read more

So it all began on 28th December when we both arrived at Manchester Airport and our parents met for the first time, albeit teary, red-eyed and not overly jovial; however, it was a lovely farewell following weeks and months of stress! It took 29 hours, one car, three planes, one taxi and lots of sitting before we finally arrived in South Goa, Patnem. There’s something fabulous about arriving after all that sweaty traveling to walk into your room (Home as it is aptly named) and find it to be a cute, perfect image of everything you imagined. Relief! Instantly, as British as we are, we headed to the bar on the beach for a well-earned bottle of Goa’s finest: Kingfisher. In all honesty, we spent the first four days living, eating, ‘tanning’ in a 50 meter ... read more

Henkilokohtainen taksikuskimme tarjosi meille kyydin hki-vantaan lentokentalle niin aikaisin etteivat edes elakelaiset olleet liikkeella, joten aamukahvit tulivat tarpeeseen. Kahvihetki kuitenkin hieman venyi ja ehdottomasti viimeinen kuulutus matkustajille partanen ja mattsson sai meidat kiiruhtamaan koneeseen. Onneksi ehdittiin lennolle ja reissu saattoi alkaa. Riian kautta paastiin lontooseen, jossa ensimmainen paiva kului suurimmaksi osaksi julkisissa kulkuneuvoissa. Hotelli oli todellinen kulttuurishokki. Palatsin roomservicesta saattoi tilata 500 punnan hieronnan tai 200 punnan shampoanjapullon. Jatimme nama palvelut kayttamatta, vaikka houkutus olikin suuri nauttia naista herkuista ja jattaa lasku huoneen piikkiin. Kiitos sirkulle ja raikalle, etta saimme siipeilla heidan huoneessaan. Muuten oltiin lontoossa ihan perusturisteja: nahtiin sherlock holmes, harry potterin junalaitu... read more

We're now a little further down the coast in Patnem. It's a lovely little place and much more chilled out than Palolem which just started to feel a bit like the Costa Del India. We'd been a bit stuck there due to me getting ill and then as soon as I started to feel better Vickie got sick for a couple of days as well. So it's been a bit of a stalled start for the traveling. But we're both feeling much better now! When we went to book the train tickets on Saturday for our onward journey down to Kerala we were told we couldn't get one until Wednesday. We didn't really fancy hanging around in Palolem until then so thought we'd hop down to Patnem for a few days until we get the train. ... read more

So after about a week in the resort of Palolem it was time for Suzannah to to end her year long journey around the world and had back to the Grey & Wet Country otherwise known as Home in the UK. So after 6 weeks together we were now just two, myself and Sue. We had already descided that we would move on from this quiet beach onto an even quieter one about 2 km away. So on Monday morning it was time to pack the rucksack again and move onwards. Mind you I'm now getting a dab hand at the art of packing or is it that I now have another small ruck sack too? So after a quick Taxi ride we both arrive at our new home for the next couple of weeks. Patnam ... read more

Patnem Beach happened to us as a stroke of luck. After the sauna-circus we came out to discover that we'd missed the last bus to Gokarna, and so decided to just head to Palolem/Patnem. On the way, we overheard a conversation with a young ex-pat who seemed to know the area, and directed us towards quieter Patnem, as well as the cheapest of beach huts... This is basically how we ended up for the next 5 days at "Bonkers" . This beach shack hosted some fantastic multi-cuisine in a laid back, easy-going atmosphere with some of the best service we'd found in all of India. Lex quickly made a new Indian boyfriend in her personal waiter, Sanjiv, who doted on her hand and foot... Originally from Washington State, the ex-pat, whom we later came to know ... read more

After 2+ weeks kickin' it with le hippies in Arambol, we finally decided it time to mosey on South. . . We figured Anjuna must be worth a look, since it is the infamous party-spot of infamous party-Goa. But, as we'd been warned, it really was a stain compared to our first experience - sprawling concrete "beach huts" and restaurants lined the beach, which was actually mostly rock anyway. The crowd we saw in our day there was mainly Russian, and generally not much to look at. We were sick at the time, so didn't feel like floundering around for a good party and decided to leave asap. Further south, we headed for Colva, a massive, endless beach with fine but crunchy sand and perfect waves. Although our first night was unfortunately spent being mosquito-eaten and ... read more

Hello again readers! Hope you are all OK? We are about to bombard you with another blog entry, only a small one though as its just our mini break to Goa to tell you about today. First things first Sar's been unlucky enough to pick up a cold over the last few days so isnt feeling her best, having a cold in the heat is a bit of an odd feeling apparently (and a bit draining!) Sure she will be right as rain soon though, thank god once more for our bulging medkit of goodies! Well we started in Panaji as you all very well know which is the 'capital' of Goa. Its like a small slice of portugal/the med in India, and being christian/cathlic getting there on a sunday was pretty fruitless! The place was ... read more

Samir's article. Just yesterday, when we were supposed to rent the bikes, the rentee cancelled on us, so we spent the day at our aunt and uncle's 5+ star hotel. It had a golf course, air conditioned rooms and most importantly, it had a pool. The pool had a mini bridge, stone statues and a bar, which you could swim over to and order yourself a pepsi, martini or a juice box (depending on your age). After swimming in the salt-free water, we walked down the beach that the resort was located on, and found a small boat that would take four of us down the river by the beach and back to shore. Today, our relatives left on a plane to Mumbai, while we went on a dolphin spotting cruise on the same boat as ... read more

Hi, It is Beth once again. I gave Azim a hard time for not having written anything yet, and he said he was the manager. Which I guess is true-that along with being our travel agent. It will be interesting once we are out of India to see if anybody else (me I guess) takes it upon themselves to make travel decisions-now we just figure Azim knows what he is doing and my main job is to pack up every few days and make sure he leaves nothing behind on trains or in restaurants (as in, that has already happened a few times!) Okay, the kids have already written about our time in Kannur and Wayanad but they missed out a few good pictures and like I said, we are killing time here in Goa waiting ... read more
