Firstly I'll finish off in Bombay. We met Balbu at 9.00am who promptly whisked off us around the city highlights - some of which we had already seen. However, we did have a stroll in the Hanging Gardens, and visited Gandhis house, which was of great interest. Later the heavens opened and down came the rain! Balbus little taxi has one windscreen wiper which didn't work, well at least not very often. He used his hand and soap! This was made all the more worse by the fact that everything kept steaming up! How he could see is beyond us! Anyway we had the obligatory you must visit this shop and we did and then another and then .... we said no, no more and escaped to the hotel!! We had afternoon tea in the Taj ... read more

After the hustle and bustle of dusty Rajasthan and the chaos of Mumbai - Goa has been the calm that we needed to recharge ourselves in readiness for Nepal. Our train disgorged us at Anjuna station in the early hours of the morning and we groggily climbed into an auto rickshaw for the journey to our hotel. Our hotel was very nice with an inviting pool and a great value breakfast of eggs, toast and tea for 50p! Anjuna itself is very small and has just a handful shops and restaurants. The beach itself was gorgeous and deserted on most days. Best of all it was on our door step. Our days have not been very hectic at all and have mostly consisted of sunbathing throughout the day then watching the amazing sunset in the evening ... read more

Yup, another day in the hospital, we checked out the Goa medical services today. This time it was me who needed attention. I woke up today with a swell just behind my large toe on the left foot. It hurts to walk - hurts a lot! Had to limp all day long. That's was just one of my problems. The other - both my eyes are quite red today, same symptoms as Prem’s which she had in Trivandrum a week ago, though not quite tomato red like hers. Off to the local hospital, The Vintage Hospital at about 9:30am. Yes, that's the name of the hospital. True to its name, things are indeed “vintage” in this hospital! Ok, so I'm comparing it to a North American hospital, maybe it’s not fair. We started off by seeing ... read more

Prem had an interesting encounter overnight in the washroom. She heard a weird noise at bathroom window, sounded like a piercing shrill and something was knocking the window trying to get in. She froze completely, unable to move. It stopped after a while and she ran back to bed. She heard it again the second time when she went to the bathroom later that night. Not sure what it was in the end. We had enough of this old house, it’s very spooky and there are always strange noises from all over the house on top of the cricket, bird and sounds from other animals. We checked out today. When we went to settle the bill we were told that the credit card verification machine was not working so they demanded cash! We did not have ... read more

Goa, Goa, Gone 23/01/08 - 02/02/08 I wave goodbye to the dirt of Shiv, and head back on the night train to Jaipur. The insects do their best to fuck with my karma again, but I'm a combat veteran now, and I just roll over in my top bunk and sleep while the bombs fall all around me. We catch a bus from Jaipur to Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. For those not in the know, it's a fucking massive white building of the temple variety, and well worth a couple of morning hours standing and staring. Then, we're back on the road for Delhi, where it all began, and where it all ends. I spend my final day with Alicia and Laurence, drinking cocktails in a bar in the Connaught centre, and at ... read more

Monday morning in Panjim and the city wakes up. Tumble weed is replaced by cars, and empty streets replaced by people. We arose out of our cell, sorry hotel room; had a hose down, sorry cold shower, and went looking for some culture. It came in the form of 'Old Goa', which was the capital before Panjim. About 9km east, we hopped into a taxi and had breakfast getting hassled in the same way you do at every tourist trap. We all stuck to our ritual of eggs and toast, mainly habit, mainly because that and cereal is about it for breakfast in India. After looking around some of the Churches and Cathedrals in Old Goa, we got a more exciting rickshaw back to the centre of Panjim and did some shopping. After circumnavigating the whole ... read more

Once again, a taxi to the next place in Goa was first on the bill! We had breakfast at the hotel and set off! We arrived in Panjim (Goa's capital) with a little confusion. The taxi driver had dropped us at a different church to the one we had intended! Bags on back, sweating and still hungry, we aimlessly walked around for a few minutes until the mistake was realised. Not wanting to repeat the 'how much stuff can you fit in a rickshaw' game, we sucked it in and walked to the area of interest. As I was about to faint, I was left with the bags while Mark and Ollie were set the task of finding the hotel. I hope this will be the last time they are left alone! I was still drinking ... read more

We left Palolem at a respectable 11am and bid farewell to our fantastic views and relaxed beach life. After a brief negotiation over price we had begun the two hour taxi journey up to Panaji (Panjim), Goa's capital. The journey was breakneck and bumpy as all the road journeys seem to be here, but got some great glimpses of village life as we hurtled through the countryside. Sari-clad women working slowly through endless green fields and hordes of school children dressed in pristine uniforms making the hot and dusty walk home. We arrived in Panaji and spent a good half an hour trying to locate the Afonso Guesthouse. A helpful man on a motorcycle pointed us in the right direction and we were dropped off outside the quiet and friendly family-run guest house. We checked in ... read more

... where the grass is greener and the cows are prettier :) After a hillarious trainride to Goa and 2 days in paradise, we decided to continue focussing on the cultural richness of that province and moved today to the capital, called Panaji. Very relaxed, portuguese influences are very present. Obviously we're not the only europeans, flooding this sympathic town. Around every corner we meet more white chickens like us, but it won't take too long 'til we look like the aborigines. We hope everything's fine and all of you guys are well. thanks so much for your warm lines. Enjoy the recent pix and stay tuned. ... read more
