Check out of the AFONSO today. We were paying the bill and part of it was for laundry - we had to pay 485rps for the laundry, I gave 500rps and started to walk off. The landlady stopped me and quite rudely said - you owe me the commission from the bank. Oh, ok - erm how much is it? 34Rps! 34 BLEEDIN Rupees. I gave her 20rps and again started to walk off - she looked and said you still owe me 14 I said No knock it off the money I gave you for the laundry and then you actually owe me 1... I couldn't believe it I thought it was really petty - 34rps isn't a lot is it? Anyway it made me laugh. We have just been the bank, had a walk ... read more

***BOXING DAY*** Happy Boxing Day Just having breakfast - off to Anjuna Market. Woohoo! My idea of heaven - DK idea of hell. Having read a lot about it we have decided that we will stay all day and make the most of it. Took a while to get here - 45mins maybe in a tuk-tuk but it was nice enough going through different towns and villages. The market itself was ok, quite large but selling the same stuff every other stall.I imagine that its lost the hippy vibe that made it famous I'm sure that people who came here on the 60s & 70s will agree. Anyway was nothing spectacular -I bought a present for my mum and some incense sticks oh and we bought some cake. Ive told DK its probably a space cake ... read more

***CHRISTMAS DAY*** HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! Another glorious day here in the PANJIM INN. Had Christmas breakfast, the biggest fruit salad I have ever seen, toast jam and a large pot of coffee. It's lovely just sat chilling watching the world go by. We exchanged gifts this morning - we had a plan that we would buy token gifts this year from which ever place we were in. DK wanted some t-shirts so we got them last night - at least one of us stuck to the plan. I got a bag but I got it in Udaipur. Just have to wait for everyone in the UK to get up so we can wish them happy Christmas. The kids will have opened the presents as soon as we left but if they could just pretend that they ... read more

***CHRISTMAS EVE*** Yep - you guessed it - its another beautiful day. We havent really made any plans for today, maybe check a few emails and and look for some presents that the apple pie eating interupted yesterday. The girls want bags and the ones we have seen seem to be a pretty decent quality, sowe know if we leave it until Mumbai then it'll be a pretty bad decision. So the second guess for the day is where are we for breakfast - yep The PANJIM INN. Can I just say that we have checked out other places close by for breakfast and this is the nicest, yes its a little more expensive than the others but its really nice,we like it anyway. It has a colonial feel to it, definitely a hint of days gone by ... read more

Up and to the bank, DK is having a love hate relationship with them at the moment.. i think its quite funny but I darent laugh :) KARMA will come and get my ass Went back to the PANJIM INN for breakfast, that's where I am now, sat in the sun writing this... Enjoyed yesterday, our walk was good so looking for an equally enjoyable one to pass some time this morning. We went on a little stroll near our hotel up the hill to the temple - we've hardly been to any temples this holiday so its made a nice change for me, although I suspect that DK would rather poke his eyes out. Walked back through the village, quite nice, again Im going to say it seems very Med like. Very amusing to be ... read more

Today is really warm! (funny that considering where we are :)) we have come to the PANJIM INN for breakfast - its a great place... Expensive by comparison to what we have been paying for food but of course still mad cheap by our standards. Today we had 2 boiled eggs, 4 toast, large pot coffee x 2 - 295 rps!!! Reading the NAVHIND TIMES - Its all very civilized... Ive just been looking back through some of the photos I have taken and remembered something from Udaipur... When we was delayed in Udaipur we were talking to some Indian guy from London who had gone to Mumbai to study acting (daaaarling!) He told us he was in Udaipur for a wedding at the CITY PALACE, so I said "ooo was it in the courtyard blah ... read more

So here we are in Goa, weather wise its beautiful, nice and hot but its also a bit humid and sticky. Its very lush and green and a bit 'jungly' as we were driving along to Panjim. We arrive at the guest house - THE AFONSO -and wonder what all the fuss was about - the owner insisting that we pay our monies up front and the palaver we had doing so... But were here now and it is nice enough - I think were just tired and that's making us unimpressed with everything. We unpacked and went for a walk round the town, its strange it seems very Mediterranean which I know is the Portuguese influence but your in India so there's that as well... its a little strange I'm finding it funny that Ive ... read more

There are no straight flights from Cochin to Goa so we had to go back up through Bombay. We had a short layover though. Goa is known for its beaches and having been "invaded" by Western hippies in the 60's and 70's. Let me tell you, some of them have never left and some of them are going back! We even had a few gray, long hair to the butt, friends on our flight. Good for them! (: We weren't in Goa for long so we didn't have many plans. Our only real goal was to see these amazing beaches. So we found the closest tourist trap travel agent (that's a tongue twister!) and booked a day long "beaches" tour! I was surprised to find that we were the only Muzungu on the thing! I don't ... read more

Goa, Day 1 Two words summarize the situation here at Panaji, Goa’s capital: hot and very humid. Arrived last night via a direct flight from Ahmadabad, capital of Gujarat, a five-hour bus ride from Udaipur. It pretty much feels like a steam bath. On arrival arrival last night it rained heavily, which is unusual for this time in Goa. Goa has a very interesting mix of cultures and religions. The local language is Marathi but a few older folks still speak Portuguese. Hindi is not commonly spoken here. Today I walked into a local spa, where hairdresser was a Muslim, and the Massage therapist, a Tibetan Buddhist. An altar was constructed within the Salon symbolizing all the three major religions represented (Hinduism, Islam, and Catholicism). Churches can be seen everywhere. The place is very lush and ... read more
