Goa is an ideal place to just chill out. Once you've seen Old Goa with its reminders of past Portugese rule, there's really only the beach - at least that's the case here at Bambolim. At some of the bigger and more touristy resorts there are discotheques and shops close by, but here there's only the hotel and a couple of beach bars. The day after we arrived - Tuesday 10 January I think - we went on the hotel's bus with other guests for a long afternoon and evening excursion. We stopped briefly at a Hindu temple, then continued to Old Goa. There, the clean wide streets, lawns and buildings had a distinctly European feel - not much of a surprise really as this was a Portugese colony until as recently as 1961. I believe ... read more

We took a taxi from Mumbai Central to the domestic airport, about an hour away. Despite the wasted time at the station, we were now well ahead of schedule and changed our bookings to an earlier Jet Airways flight. This was another ‘first’ for Pintu, who had never before been inside an aircraft. His excitement as we boarded the aircraft, hurtled down the runway and took off was a joy to behold. He was fascinated by the view of clouds from above and, of course, I had to take photos to remind him of this memorable event. The flight to Goa was scheduled to be an hour but only took about three quarters of that. The hotel, alerted to our earlier arrival by my telephone call from Mumbai, provided transport from Dabolim Airport to Bambolim Beach, ... read more

SRI LANKA AND GOA, INDIA - DEC 05 & JAN 06 As most of you know, in November, 2005 we were in the U.S. for the birth of our grandson, Evan, but returned to Pretoria, South Africa (where we were living for a year) just before Christmas. We spent a lovely Christmas with our dear South African friends, Sue & Peter Poole and family at their second home on a nearby lake - idyllic! The day after Christmas we flew ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the first of three posts about a trip I did to India together with my parents and my uncle Anders in 2005. This would be the last time that the four of us traveled together til date. For this last hooray we decided to head east to India, our furthest away destination so far. As with our previous trips together the majority of our time was spent laying on the beach or gulping down the delicious food at the hotel. I especially favored the naan bread and the omelettes at the breakfast buffet. Aside from our lazy days at the hotel and at the beach we did three different explorations of Goa. This post will cover the first of them and it was on December 1st when we went to ... read more

Hi, Palolem beach is in south Goa. It is a beutiful beach, one of the nicesest that I have ever seen (see pictures). Beeing so, it is very touristic. There are good waves so I catch them and also swim a lot. Also good food and alcohol. The beach reminds Dahab, a wide bay, many many coco huts between the coco trees. Also, like in Dahab, you can choose the fish that you are going to eat. There are many many coco huts and restaurants every where. It appears that before the beginning of the season they build all this and after the season, they take it apart. Otherwise, the monsoon will take ot away. In the beach that are gangs of cows and dogs, living happily together. Around the trees, there are gangs of crows, ... read more

Having experienced the cities and towns of India we decided to seek out the Costa del Sol of India - Goa. It being monsoon season meant that we wouldn't be able to swim on the sea and enjoy golden sands sipping cocunut drinks at beach shacks, but we were keen to see what Goa was all about so decided to go there anyway. Getting to Goa was a marathon journey. A 15 hour train east from Nagpur to Mumbai was followed by a 14 hour train south from Mumbai to Goa on the Konkan railway. Luckily for us we had a bit of a gap between the two journeys which meant we got to wander round Mumbai for the first time, but more of Mumbai later. Everyone had told us that the Konkan rail journey was ... read more

hey folks! Guess a few of you have already seen Goa - guess you know why "washed-up" describes some things/people so accurately! Barely an hour after we'd arrived, on Thursday24th on Calangute beach, a guy with dreadlocks down to his knees and skin peeling around his bulging torso invited me to paly guitar at the "sea pearl" beach hut that evening!!! He turned out to be an absolute guitar genius; christening my Poona-bought classical six-string with an awesome rocked-up version of some classical guitar astandard... while I got to play some bob marley, damien rice and chilli peppers... Panaji these couple of days has been very interesting too - yesterday seeing churches and museum in old Goa; and today just wandering the streets and peering at things... I chanced on an exhibition of Tulalip culture - ... read more

In Goa now with Richeldis. Is bloody hot. Was delayed in Paris for a day before coming out here which was a pain. Spent a day in Mumbai seeing the sights - pretty quiet as was Sunday. Not as much poverty as I expected - perhaps I just haven't sen it yet. Had high tea in the Taj hotel by gate of india - v. Raj colonial. Goa seems very European. Just schlepped around town today. Now back for a Siesta. Going on cruise later. Got to dash... D... read more
