Well it's 9:05pm at Hong Kong, I have just got back from a trip into Central Hong Kong, it was heaps busy! We spent a good 1/2 to 1 hour walking around trying to find a shop that would sell video cameras, finally we went to a place called "Fortress" (or something similar) and I managed to grab a great MiniDV video camera for around AUD$700, which when I checked on SONY's Australia page seemed to retail for around $1099! Bargain! I have also picked up my tickets for my trip into mainland China! I am going to be flying from Shenzhen to Beijing on then Beijing to Guilin a few days later and then Guilin to Shenzhen two or so days after that. I am yet to decide on where I will stay in China... ... read more

Well, we're finally on the road and five days into our week in Hong Kong. We've been all over the place using the fantastic public transport (buses, trams, trains and the famous 'Star Ferry'). On Monday we visited Kowloon Park. The highlight was the ten or so minutes spent looking at a giant frog sunning itself in a fountain. We eventually decided that the unfortunate amphibian was not sunbathing but had in fact expired earlier that day...otherwise the park was very nice and a welcome refuge from the city bustle. Later on that day we visited the waterfront promenade and the 'Avenue of Stars' (the Hong Kong film industry's equivalent of Hollywood's 'Walk of Fame') and were surprised at the number of names we knew. Finally, we went up The Peak for sunset and amazing views ... read more

So the highlight of this day was to meet up with Jacqueline, who is a friend of a friend from SF. She took me to a place called Dragon I (cute, right), which is a spectacular Dim Sum place. It turns out that we could eat all of the Dim Sum that we wanted for a set price of HK$110. This is a good deal! Even if you think in terms of water bottles, which I didn't have to anymore. She also told me what it's like to live in HK, and we chatted about all sorts of things. All in all, it was a fantastic experience! Plus, the place had what I thought to be the coolest bathroom on the planet (that is until I saw an even better bathroom the next day). ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Lamma Island January 18th 2005

I took the ferry out to Lamma Island. I love being on the water, so half of the fun for me was to ride the ferry. I can't believe how easy it is to get around in HK. I believe that the ferry only cost a few US dollars (by this point, I had finally learned the exchange rate, and no longer felt the need to think in terms of water bottles). The funny thing was that there were a bunch of kids that were apparently playing games with one of the crew. The kids would do something silly, then bang on the cabin door till someone came out. They'd then drag the crew guy over to where something of the utmost importantance had occured (like say, one of them put a coke bottle on their ... read more

So begins my very first blog entry. Ever. Sorry in advance for the spelling - it doesn't seem like I have a spell checker available. The flight Very Very Very long. Perhaps the longest ever. In all seriousness, the flight wasn't that bad. I left SFO at 12:30 AM (Sunday night), so I was able to sleep through most of the flight. I arrived in Hong Kong at 6:30 AM on Tuesday. Good thing that I don't like Mondays 'cause I didn't even get to have one this time. Then again, Mondays are really only meaningful to those of us that are employed (which I am not, effectively...). There was one oddity about the flight - there was a girl who kept staring at me in the SFO terminal. I ended up behind her in the ... read more

Today I went to vist the Buddah on Lantau Island. A simple boat ride and a bus ride around the island got me to the Po Lin Monastery. The first thing to see is the Giant Bronze Buddah. It is 23 meters tall and sits atop a hill. After paying $8.50 US and climbing 256 steps I was at the foot of the Buddah. The views from up here were pretty nice but it was a hazy day so photos were no good. After a good look around I went down to the Monastery to see what was cooking (literally, the ticket included a vegetarian lunch). There were lots of offerings of food and incense and a temple where the held a ceremony after I ate. Before getting back on the bus I walked up the ... read more

I have found certain themes this trip that catch my eye and require my attention. The buildings of Hong Kong are great, so many of the tallest buildings in the world are here, still I find some of the older buildings even more impressive. Sometimes I forget where I am, there is a waterfront hillside that could be Italy or Greece, the town square in Macau could be Brazil or Peru. It is all here in the Hong Kong area. I hope to add to each log as I capture pictures that fit those categories, so check back. Today I spent most of the day in Kow Loon walking the streets, lots of new sights, more to see tomorrow...... read more

All we have done is EAT, oh and drive places to eat again. The food is amazing here and the seafood is even better. Here I have some pictures of the food from various markets. The one photo I'll have to go back for is of the live chickens in the cages looking at the dead chickens hanging in the storefront.... read more

This is my first entry in this Blog. I hope to share the best of my trip to Hong Kong and beyond. I landed safely after 15+ hours on Continental 99 on December 23rd. I was met by my good friends and my hosts for this trip Geoff & Grace and we went straight to a great meal at his parents house. After a good (no major jet lag) nights sleep I woke up and went with Geoff to his office to learn more about what has been keeping him busy since he left the US. We met Grace for lunch, shopped the rest of the day, while Geoff worked, and finally got together for a family dinner. After dinner we went club hopping with Tim, our able guide, who happens to be Geoff's brother. The ... read more
