All we have done is EAT, oh and drive places to eat again. The food is amazing here and the seafood is even better. Here I have some pictures of the food from various markets. The one photo I'll have to go back for is of the live chickens in the cages looking at the dead chickens hanging in the storefront.... read more

This is my first entry in this Blog. I hope to share the best of my trip to Hong Kong and beyond. I landed safely after 15+ hours on Continental 99 on December 23rd. I was met by my good friends and my hosts for this trip Geoff & Grace and we went straight to a great meal at his parents house. After a good (no major jet lag) nights sleep I woke up and went with Geoff to his office to learn more about what has been keeping him busy since he left the US. We met Grace for lunch, shopped the rest of the day, while Geoff worked, and finally got together for a family dinner. After dinner we went club hopping with Tim, our able guide, who happens to be Geoff's brother. The ... read more

Summary This is my 2nd trip to Hong Kong. I visited Hong 9 years ago pre-China handoff and now and post-China changes. What has changed? Is it the same Hong Kong as my previous visit? So much has changed. There are the obvous changes from new construction and then the other changes from political to social. I discovered more than I had missed from my first trip. The food seem to be better, every thing seem more efficient and clean. On the surface, Hong Kong seems like a bustling fast-paced city. Yes, it is a city full resonating of modernities and materialism. However, underneath the cell phones, skyscrapers, bright lights and endless shopping centers, lies a culture that is very traditional Chinese. One must scrape past the surface, to see this. Take a trip to ... read more

We will be in Beijing for 5 days, where we see Tianamen Square, the Forbidden City and of course the Great Wall. We will be spending Xmas in Beijing. After that we fly to Xi'an in Central China for 4 days. Here we will see the Terracotta Warriors - there are over 7 thousand of them, each with a different face. After that we fly back to Hong Kong and go straight to Guangzhou (formerly Canton) - which is about 3 hours north of HK. We will spend New Years there at one ... read more

Howdy all, Life is tough at here in the East..........the Cantonese is coming along nicely (3 words counts as fluent right????) Have done a fair bit of stuff, despite battling jet lag. Went on a night cruise this evening around Hong Kong. There is a channel that seperates Hong Kong Island from Kowloon Peninsula (where we are staying)......get your maps out to check it out. Also the tram upto 'The Peak' is a must see. Fantastic view over the city and surrounding areas. The angle the tram travels at is a little worrying, but it seems to make it to the top most of the time in 1 piece ! Accomodation : Metropole Hotel - US$67 per night. Beautiful ! We are staying in the Metropole Hotel on Waterloo Road. It is expensive at US$266 for ... read more

Greetings from Hong Kong, Well, I am still enjoying myself in Hong Kong, even though I work far to much - even on Saturday. You wouldn't believe the money in this city. 9 out of 10 cars is luxury - mostly mercedes, BWMs, jags or porches. And you never see a car that's older than 2 or 3 years. Another car that's popular here is the mini - there's quite a few of them around. Since my last update Ive had a few little trips. Lantau Island - the largest island in the Hong Kong Archipelago. Here I visited the largest sitting Budda statue in the world. Its a massive structure on top of a hill. Hope to send photos soon. Its in the middle of nowhere, but the view from it is real cool. Hello everyone, After a very quick farewell to the parents i finally got on the plane to Hong Kong. After lots of nervous chatting getting to know each other, a very long 12 hours and about a bottle of wine (come on you wasn't expecting me to wait till i got there was you?) i finally land in Hong Kong. When i got on the coach at the airport there was a totally mad woman on there who was to be our tour guide for a few days, great i thought, well actually she turned out to be cool. Her name was Lyon and she saw us as her little children, which was a tad scary but mom don't worry she looked after me and i didn't get into any trouble. Sunday the 17th October was ... read more

Just a quick one : Photos are now at www.steveshinn.plus.com/hongkong Hong Kong 2 In the morning I went on a major walk around, and succeeded in my attempt to get away from the more tourist based parts of the city and sample some of the less commercial bits of HK. not much to say other than the buildings are drab and the people poor. I then used the ‘peak tram’ to get to a the top of a peak (surprisingly) which looks over the whole of the city of Hong Hong. On the way up I got chatting to an English brother and Sister who had been away together for five months, but were leaving for home. on the 25th of September. At the top the view was fantastic so we took some photos and ... read more

Evening All. Got to HK airport, took the train to HK and checked into my hotel. Hotel is really good, got a computer in the room - but it runs win 3.1 so cant use the blog as the form wont seem to submit properly. Got a skyline view of HK which is really tremendous. Stuff about HK : LOADS of lights and even more people. A true metropolis. Its so humid but I dont really mind - the hot air hits you like waves. The only dodgy thing is the really thick air - v smoggy and I expect the heat doesnt help that. On the first night I went for a walk around the parts nearest to my hotel to get my bearings and then to an irish pub and met a swiss guy ... read more

I have adjusted well to my first few weeks. I started teaching last week. The first thing I needed to do was to find out all the kids English names. There are some real weird ones like: No-no, Yo-yo, Kinki, Chili, Osama, Lola, Wing and Christ. Osama is the name of several of the East Indian students (who speak perfect Chinese - weird). The children call me "Jim Go-Ga", which apparently means "Big Brother Jim" in Cantonese. I brought my lunch to school the first day, only to be laughed at by the teachers. Apparently sandwiches are only eaten for breakfast here, and a can of coke was unheard of at any meal! One lady brought fish for lunch - which was barely cooked. As she ate she spat the bones and parts she didnt like ... read more
