March 28 Woo hoo! Tony has another day off! It’s Easter Monday here in HK. We get our normal late start, but what the heck, I’m retired. For the moment. Destination: Victoria Peak, 552m (let me get my calculator out - about 1820ft), highest point on HK Island. It’s a fabulous day, puffy clouds and blue sky above, warm with a pleasant breeze - first decent weather since I arrived. Walk towards Central and on to catch the Peak Tramway (est. 1888) off Garden Road next to Hong Kong Park. Woah! The line is snaking out the door for tickets. Yikes! We forgot that it’s a holiday. A dreaded holiday. Sundays and holidays always mean loads and hoards of people at all the typical tourist stops. Tony’s not taking this lying down. He goes up to ... read more

Its supposedly one of those unique cities in the world, up there with New York and Paris. Why? Cos its so darned busy and crowded. But yes, it does have something special - watches - lots of cheap watches!! The day started out fantastically with a FREE BUSINESS CLASS flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong. How did we get this free, and why was it business class. Well, let me teach you a lesson in not letting anything go to waste. You see, in 2003 when Melenie and I flew to London, we went on Japan Airlines. And we had the clever idea of joining the Japan Airlines frequent flyer programme (it was free) simply because we had nothing else to do on the plane and the form was sitting in front of us. Two years ... read more

Ok, so I'm waaay behind on the journals... March 27 It’s Sunday and Tony finally has a day off - poor boy, he’s worked 13 days in a row. All that scrambling for a China visa for me, and we chuck the whole idea. We were up late. Drank wine. Watched silly television. Slept in. Besides I’m still under the weather. Speaking of the weather I realize I haven’t spoken of the weather yet. So far it’s been very gloomy, cool, windy and not at all tropical. I am disappointed because LA was gloomy, cool, windy and really rainy this past winter and I was sooo looking forward to warmth & sun to bring some life into my reptilian-like circulation. In chucking the China plan, we had to come up with a local replacement. Since I ... read more

by Charlie ---------- This story is dedicated to Captain Ken Conde, a good friend who died of cancer in Bangkok shortly after I wrote this article. May his new skies be CAVU forever.-------------- ThaiSky Airlines flight 328 pushed back from its' ramp space at 10:50 with 80 passengers bound for Hong Kong along with 12 cabin and 3 flight crew members. On today's flight, with a light drizzle starting to fall, I was on the flight deck. After securing the cabin and getting our clearance to Hong Kong, we contacted Bangkok ground control on 121.9 for pushback out of our position, Remote Stand 94. The slow-starting high by-pass engines were started next and from there it was only a short taxi to Bangkok International's 21 Right runway. Traffic was a bit heavy and combined with the ... read more

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, Would you be mine, could you be mine? Huh? I never got what Mr. Rogers was aiming at. Anyway, here’s a look at our neighborhood and our swell little apartment. As I mentioned before, we live in the Sheung Wan district, a mainly Chinese working class area. Our apartment building is owned by the same guy who owns the club Tony works at, who owns many restaurants and other businesses …which is why he is a millionaire. And a very nice guy. The building is small in comparison to most in HK, having only 5 floors - well, I’ve explained this before - it’s actually 6 1/2, the first and a half floors are just not recognized as official, a sort of European ... read more

Rest of the first week here… March 22 Did some more walking around the neighborhood. Most of it went by in a blur as I became very disoriented (pun, ha) on my whereabouts. The streets are angled, and curve, so the direction I think is home is completely the opposite. Tony’s circuitous routes don’t help much. He travels in a "straight line" even if it takes you up 100 steps and down 50 and through an alley and back up. Much of our neighborhood, and of HK, is the same pattern, so when you think you have a landmark, it turns out there’s one just like it on the next block: DeVoeux Street East: bank / 7 eleven / variety store / atm / cell phone store / bank / bakery / drug store / noodle ... read more

Today is really April 23, 2005, but I’m continuing to backtrack on the log. March 21 First day could only sleep till around 9am - very much still on the LA clock. Like a trooper I was up and ready for my first venture out into Hong Kong. Tony said we would take a short walk. Right. Not with him…it always turns out to be an unending trek. Being it was a bit chilly I wore my boots (which have 3 1/2 inch heels) because I THOUGHT it would really be a short walk. How could I have totally forgotten what it’s like to live with Tony? Our apt is in Sheung Wan, a district just to the west of Central. We traversed Sheung Wan, Central, and Admiralty districts and came back around to Soho and ... read more

Good Evening! It’s April 21st… The fried vermicelli was excellent! Xiamen vermicelli - slices of pork and small shelled shrimp in an exotic tasting sauce with sweet pickled julienne veges & sprouts, very fresh & tropical - a huge dish that could have served both of us, but, of course, we ordered a second dish too. Piggish Americans. The other was slices of beef & flat rice noodles with onions, green & red pepper chunks in a black bean paste sauce. And unlimited free hot tea. OK, so I’m not a food writer - Tony would do much better at this than I. All this for only $80HK ($10 US). The restaurant, Kam Sing or Golden Star, is just a block or so away from our apt. on Queens Road just north of Hollywood Road. This ... read more

Hello - I hope this blog finds you well and happy! This post is mostly from Martha - actually all from Martha… Where to start? First off, for those of you who had no idea that Tony and I moved - we are in Hong Kong now thanks to Tony nabbing a cool gig over here. When Tony was hired for the gig, we decided to give him a while to determine how permanent it seemed, then take the plunge and move me over too. He has been here since Jan 19th and I since Mar 19th. And why has it taken me soooo long to get the first blog up? Well, I left a few things “undone” in the states that had to be taken care of (taxes, selling my car, etc), plus I had ... read more

We took a night train from Youngshou at 8pm on the 5th of April. We arrived in Guangzhou to wait for the Hydrofoil all day in a hotel room - Catching the boat we arrived in Hong Kong about 7.30. Explored the Temple Street night markets. In the Morning caught the star fairy across to hong kong island, took the tram peak to the top of the island. Quite a misty day, so the photos aren't the best. Left Hong Kong to fly to London at 3pm. Would have been nice to have longer in Hong Kong. Lots of farewells to our group - had become quite attached to them all. ... read more
