Central HK from Peak trail
Slice of the HK landscape, or rather highrise-scape! Hello - I hope this blog finds you well and happy! This post is mostly from Martha - actually all from Martha…
Where to start? First off, for those of you who had no idea that Tony and I moved - we are in Hong Kong now thanks to Tony nabbing a cool gig over here. When Tony was hired for the gig, we decided to give him a while to determine how permanent it seemed, then take the plunge and move me over too. He has been here since Jan 19th and I since Mar 19th.
And why has it taken me soooo long to get the first blog up? Well, I left a few things “undone” in the states that had to be taken care of (taxes, selling my car, etc), plus I had to get the internet access set up and get used to my new Mac, AND get over jet lag and the requisite cold that hits everyone upon arrival. Excuses, excuses.
Here is a revelation: It has become apparent to me that I am NOT the organized person I think I am. It’s just an illusion - what I’m really good at is a “just in time” style of frenzied order that on the surface looks like organization to the untrained eye. (former managers and clients ignore this last statement in case I come back begging for a job) This is what I’m talking about…my little list of do’s and don’ts just to give you a backdrop of the move to HK:
Don’t 1. Wait till a week before you leave to buy your ticket because you may find out that your airline of choice (China Airlines) appears to be able to process an online reservation with electronic tickets, but inexplicably cannot, and you will have to buy a paper ticket at somewhat higher prices from Cheaptickets and have it UPS’d priority overnight to your (former, because you already moved out) place of residence because they only ship to your billing address which of course hasn’t been changed yet, where you have to write a nice note to the UPS guy to please leave it by the front door of said vacated premises, and then rush over there on a break from work (who really works the last week anyways?) to pick it up because you are flying out the next day and need that ticket.
2. Wait till the last minute to sell your car. It’s real hard to do it with a 15 hour time difference and not being there to show it and wheel and deal. Thank you dear wonderful fabulous friends who helped me with this (and to DG who unwittingly stored my car for a month)! Who would have thought that my beloved 1995 Camr with 209,000 miles on it would be a hard sell in car conscious LA?
3. Pack things in a hurry at the last minute and then stack an important, unmarked box somewhere (who knows?) in the world’s smallest storage locker (FYI …a 5’, actually 4 1/2’ by 15’ unit really can hold the equivalent of a one bedroom +, w/jukebox sized apartment!) and expect a friend to help you find one small but necessary piece of paper in said box.
4. Work till the day before you fly out. That’s just dumb.
5. Get a facial or waxing done the day before you leave. Ouch. And Ugh. A fine ugly mess I was greeting Tony after 2 months!
6. Pack too much.
7. NEVER do an across the world move alone.
Forget all that negative stuff - I have! I’m blonde and I can.
Do 1. Just do it and worry about the details later.
2. Pack everything you really want & ignore the extra baggage charges - it all goes on the credit card anyway. That’s not even real money. (I sure could use that curling iron and my new Tommy Hilfiger boots for starters…)
This being the end of my long awaited first blog, I’m sure what you really want to hear about is Hong Kong - not me. That will be next, after Tony and I have a delicious bowl of fried vermicelli from the noodle shop around the corner. Mmmmm - I’ll tell you about that later.
Enough of my rambling - maybe I can get Tony to write a post?
See ya,
Martha
