What seemed like such a good idea in the flight centre!! did not so on the flight going there. First thing that went through my mind as i stepped off the plane at HongKong airport: 'what the hell am i doing?' 'and why?' 'what is the point in going 8000 miles east to a country where you know noone, and have no specific reason for being there other than to see things?' Overwhelmed by the crowds, the strong odor of fried noodles and chicken and the unreadable text..... I dont know what it is with me, i get an idea to travel that makes me all excited and i llok forward to it for weeks but when i board the plane the point of no return i get nervous, sad and i wonder why i booked ... read more

We wanted to do a short trip in the region and didn't have much time off to do it in. We decided to try for Hong Kong. We ended up booking our flight through a local travel agent and this combined our flight, hotel and transportation to and from the airport. We were on our own once we checked in but that was okay because J and I usually avoid the organized tourist stuff anyhow. Our hotel was in Kowloon, which is across the bay from Hong Kong City, but is a great place to be in its own right. It has lots and lots of shopping and tons of close by food places. We explored the area a bit that first night after checking in. We found a cool boardwalk that had great views of ... read more

July 15-25, 2002. Our first family out-of-the-country vacation. Kelvin is just a little over 2 years old. We flew to HongKong via Singapore Airlines (and costed us dearly!, no budget airlines yet) and stayed at The Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay. Upon arrival, we took a shuttle bus going to HongKong Island. It was roughly an hour trip going there. We checked in, unpacked some of the things and headed out to see what HongKong has to offer. First stop was a park near the hotel. It is located in the middle of the busy streets of Causeway Bay. We let Kelvin play and run around. Then we headed to the Central area via MTR. Had dinner at Jollibee. Yep! it was in our itinerary. We haven't had a dose of chicken joy for almost a ... read more

Waking up on my hard bed I could feel vibrations going through my body, as well as a muffled but repeated sound - ... ... ... Each thump threw ripples on the surface of the glass of water standing by the bed, much like that effect from Jurassic Park where puddles of water would vibrate from the approaching T-Rex. A polite note from the hotel staff announced that construction work continues in a nearby block, and the whole building keeps shaking from the pounds of the piledrivers next door. Oh well, since I am on the 25th floor I would be reasonably high up in the pile of debris should the building collapse. Better take a rain check on that 2nd floor restaurant. Ivy had taken the day off and decided to begin my introduction to ... read more

There's always been something special about Hong Kong. From its importance in politics ever since the colonial heydays to the frosty relations between today's global superpowers, via the wonders of a thriving economy to its mystical oriental heritage. Virtually every person seems to be a razor sharp salaryman by day only to turn into a wall climbing supernatural kung fu expert at night. The geography of the city itself is just as outlandish and bewildering; islands of needle sharp skyscrapers crowding on the slopes of humid green hills poking out of the water, only to disappear in misty clouds. Its waters are chaotically crowded by all sorts of floating things, container barges, boats, ferries, cruise liners, floating casinos just as the streets themselves tremble under the constant burden of far too many pedestrians, touts, construction workers, ... read more

Arrived after our 14hour flight that just seemed to go for ever. Aido got food sick from the airplane food which didnt get things off to a healthy start. Being jetlagged, it was tough being thrown into the middle of a very humid Hong Kong. Hundreds of people running around with hardly a space to move. Some of them wearing the Michael Jackson sars type mask trying to dodge every germ that that was in the air. After a bit of sleep everything got easier. First thing was to sort out our remaing vaccines which we got from the nearest hospital. Although they were eyeing up my lung, liver & other organs as if they could be fobbed off on the black market here. Sights we visited while here. Central District - the buildings were funkin ... read more
