I finally made it to the beach today! I was worried the weather would keep me inside all weekend, but this afternoon was beautiful. It stormed this morning, which drove all the haze out, cooled everything down, and made it a clear and beautiful afternoon. I went by myself and read my book. It was very relaxing. That is how most of this weekend has been. Alternating between watching Desperate Housewives and reading my new book, "The piano teacher," with an occasional meal out....voila! a relaxing weekend at home. I have been thinking lately about how much I miss Walmart or Target or any large store of that kind. If you need something, where do you go? Walmart! It has everything! I wasn't really a big fan of the superstore idea, but living here makes it ... read more

Wow, this has been a LONG week. Last week just flew, so this week felt like it lasted forever. We had our first chapel this week on Wednesday (which made it feel like friday). It was really great to see all the kids get together and to hear them all singing the songs that we have taught them. It was very encouraging. I am looking forward to taking a bigger role in that part of our school. We also had our first back to school night on Wednesday. I got to meet a lot of parents. They were all very nice. I felt like I was babbling on and on, but I guess that is better than me just standing and staring at all of them like aliens. I hope they liked me! Something I learned ... read more

Today is Monday...Today is Monday...Monday Hossenfeffer, all you hungry people! I wish the same to you! (Just a little song I learned at my Orff conference. I'll sing it to you if you want....just be warned...it gets stuck in your head!!) Well. Today is monday. I have been here over a month now. Can you believe it? I had a very good weekend. Marcia and I helped out with the high school choir, and that was good for my soul. I got to work with more difficult music and sing a little! On Saturday we got lunch (a burger and fries!) and got pedicures. All in all, a great day. Yesterday I went to pick out my new kitties. Well, it turns out they are still a little too young to be home alone while I ... read more

Disneyland is one of those places in Hong Kong we were yet to explore, and as Georgia and Byron were growing to the age of fascination with the Disney characters, we decided it was time to address this omission. Disneyland is about as far from Stanley as you can get in Hong Kong, so we travelled the 50km and camped out at the local Marriott hotel. It was a good choice - a relaxing meal, a swim, and then a five minute drive from the hotel to Disneyland. The kids were well rested and looking for fun, but they did not expect the excitement that is Disneyland. Byron was agape at the people, activity and wonderful scenes all around him. Georgia was taking it in and trying to spot her favourite characters, and her intermittent squeals ... read more

It is already Wednesday night! Only two more days until the weekend. This week has just flown by. I am definitely going to pick out a little kitty on Sunday. I think it will really help to have "someone" at home waiting for me :) I guess its my replacement Adam......just don't tell him! Things are going well- this week has been busy, with meetings and social events. And next week looks the same. That is great for me because it keeps me busy during and after school. Although it also makes me go to bed at 9:00pm..... Marcia and I are going to help out with the HS choir retreat this Friday and Saturday. I am really excited for that because I really enjoy working with high school kids as well. And it will be ... read more

Woooo! I made it through my first week of teaching. :) I wanted to wait until I knew I had made it. The first day started out pretty rough. I wasn't mentally prepared for how bold and talkative the students would be. These kids were not at all shy- in fact, in some cases it was all I could do to reign them in! I should have known better, I suppose. It's just that everyone here talks about how great the kids are and how much they want to succeed, so I just thought they would be a little different. But I have to remember, kids are kids. So I came back for Day 2, totally prepared to be mean. And on that day....I didn't need to be! My classes were great. And it went really ... read more

As I sit here looking out over the water from my apartment couch, I find it hard to be too depressed. :) I have been greatly encouraged by these last few days.....by my exploring (all by myself!), by my meeting with new friends, by my shopping- small purchase! ;) and by my productivity today. Tomorrow is the first day of school. I am nervous, but I also feel good. I feel prepared (or as prepared as I could feel!) and I feel excited to meet the students. Today was mainly a work day at school....but some of the parents and students came by. It was so refreshing and energizing to meet the students and their parents. I felt so much more ME. I don't have a lot more to say right now. I am sure I ... read more

I am sitting on my couch watching Desperate Housewives on my Chinese basic cable. That just made my night!! This week has been CRAZY. It is the first week back with all of the teachers and we have been busy busy busy. This is also the week that it has kind of hit me that I will not be coming home for a long time. I thought that last week was the week where I would feel sad or overwhelmed, but last week was just plain fun. I was meeting new people, all of us were new together. We had lunches and dinners and just hanging out time. This week has mostly been Marcia and I preparing our classrooms/curriculum. I just feel so overwhelmed, it is hard to even know where to start. It's like I ... read more

Today was one of those "Hong Kong days," as a new friend of mine called it. This is not exactly a pleasant kind of day. It is the kind of day where nothing works, you can't find what you need, you can't talk to anyone who can help you, and you just feel a little lost. Not exactly the best kind of day.... :) Before I tell you about that part...I should tell you about the GOOD things that happened to me this weekend. First of all. I FINALLY met Marcia Barham begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting, the teacher I will be working with. She is a wonderful lady and has already helped me so much. I basically spent my weekend with her and her husband in their "flat." (Eventually I'll stop using the quotes and actually start calling it ... read more

Another update!! I don't have much else to do yet...so you will get a lot of updates in the beginning...and maybe not so many later. :) I am currently sitting in my classroom! woo!! It is quite large, and very nice. It seems like we have access to all kinds of resources. I have a Promethean Board (like a Smart Board) and I'm sure all kinds of other cool stuff. I will need to do some exploring. Today has been a GREAT day. Today I was just at the Lower Primary with other new Lower Primary teachers and TAs. We had a very fun, relaxing morning, and then they took us out for an awesome lunch. It was a mix of Thai, Chinese, and Indian. So I had good meat, Naan, AND (Stephanie) sweet, sticky rice ... read more
