What a fantastic place! The scenery is amazing. The Yangtze River, a pea green colour, crashes through the gorge in places, running very fast, and in others it just meanders. The surrounding mountains are magnificent. This area is very remote, very wild, each family appears to have its own little patch, growing rice and maize. There are also lots of fruit trees, some bearing pomegranites. This morning it was extremely cold, I had to wear long trousers, several layers, jacket and gloves. It warmed up though as the day progressed, and ended up a scorcher at 35 deg. When the wind blows it is like a hot air drier. Some of the roads are not made up and we have to ride over gravel. There have been lots of landslides. Health and safety regulations do not ... read more

Lots of pictures so make sure to hit the next button and scroll down to see them all. We woke up around 7:15am to head down for breakfast that we ordered the night before; 2 eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. The van was scheduled to pick us up from the hostel at 7:50am and they were on time. There were 7 of us from Panba Hostel that booked the trip and we picked up 3 more Chinese travelers at along hostel. Out of the 10 of us going to Tiger Leaping Gorge 7 of us hiked the high path and stayed overnight on the Gorge. Quick Fact from Wikipedia on TLG(Tiger Leaping Gorge) Around 15 km in length, the gorge is located where the river passes between 5,596 metre Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山; Yùlóngxuĕ Shān) ... read more

We headed to TLG a few days later than planned on october 10th... Lijiang has a way of sucking you in for a while, in a good way though. From Lijiang we took a bus to Qaitou, which is about two hours away. It costs 20 yuan if you go to the long distance bus station - just ignore all the tour guides trying to sell 200 yuan + trips. We got to Qaitou at 10:30 am after a 2 1/2 hour bus ride, and went to Jane's guest house to store our bags, and eat breakfast. Breakfast was HUGE, we could have split one entree, but it was cheap and a good start to the hike. We had two maps for TLG that we'd picked up from different places in lijiang (one from Mama Naxi's ... read more

The sun had been rising ever so slowly below the mountains teasing us with its rays for the last hour and a half. We had completed a strenuous hike up to the TeaHorse Guesthouse the day before and had collapsed into our beds after too many hours of walking and a few too many beers at high altitude. Before having gone to bed, I asked the girl working at the quaint little hostel on top of a mountain when the sun rose which the simple answer came - 8:30am. “She doesn’t know anything” I replied to the rest of the group. “The sun can’t possibly rise that late, I’m waking up at 7am.” Promptly at 8:28am the spark of sunshine glinted through the first mountain and the whole scene was illuminated by bright light. I had ... read more

Our next adventure was to head to the Tiger Leaping Gorge. The gorge one of the deepest in the world, measures 16km long and is 3900m from the Jinsha River that cuts its way through to the top of the Haha mountain. We were determined to do this 2 day trek as we have read that surprise surprise the Chinese want to build at least 8 dams along the Yangzi river. Once the proposed dams are completed the dams will flood more than 13000 hectares of prime farmland, force over 100,000 people to relocate and wash away local culture, history, unique architecture and indigenous plant and animal life. So we said our goodbyes to Shangri La and Noah’s cafe by having one last pizza and BLT and headed south on a bus for 2 hours to ... read more

Blog 12: Highway Robbery, High Walks and High Hopes. If there’s one thing you can say about Kunming, is that it smells nice when it rains. It truly does. I have now been on a train for 26 hours. I think that’s plenty of time to be on a train, so Richard Branson, if you’re reading this, I would like a special card please that I can use when I’m on trains in the UK. If they get delayed, I can use it to get flown out by private helicopter, because quite frankly, then it comes to train travel, I’ve done my time. And to make my time on the train EVEN more exciting, I got the top bunk of the hard sleeper, which is a little shelf resting about 7 or 8 feet up, right ... read more

Because the trip from Baishuitai to Qiaotou took less than 2 ½ hours, I arrived at Jane’s Guesthouse around 10:30. I had some breakfast and found three girls (2 Americans and a German girl) that were also going to do the Tiger Leaping Gorge (said to be one of the 10 best trails in China). Because I didn’t want to do the hike on my own, I joined them. After heaving stored my backpack in the guesthouse, we started off together with a German couple. The weather was really good after the rainy and cloudy days before. Because of the heat and the height, the climb was pretty hard, but already from the start very beautiful. The climb was on some parts really steep, so the guys left us somewhere on the mountain, because they wanted ... read more

Tiger Leaping Gorge is by far one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. It's magical. Ken and I started out from Lijiang and took the bus to Qiaotou and then from there we found the high trail. I did not expect quite as much uphill as there was, that's for sure! At least, not right away. We stopped a few hours in, at Naxi House happy to take our bags off. The water and snacks were heavy. 3L gets heavy quickly. We then set out for the 25 Bends, the hardest part of the trail. I finally gave in and got on a donkey for part of it. I had been under the impression that the donkey ride went to the end of the trail, which I didn't want. But for 20 minutes ... read more

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a mountainous area where the Yangtze River cuts through. The normal path is a two day hike through the mountains looking way down to the river. I met some people from Hong Kong as I began the trek and spent the next two days with them. I definitely started to feel my age after a few hours of heading upwards. Its not the most difficult hike inthe world, but I did have to push myself a few times. The second day it rained lightly throughout most of our hike. It left a fog and mist surrounding the mountains and cooled things down a little without presenting too much of a problem. The mountains reminded me of the Andes; the view was pretty spectacular. It was challenging and well worth it. ... read more

Greetings! It's been awhile since posting, so a brief update, real blogs to come later with photos.... in about a month. Got to Lijiang with no problems, then off to here. The altitude and I didn't get along so much when I started hiking, but otherwise it's been wonderful. I do plan to write Lonely Planet a short memo though. Since LP is for everyone and most of the things listed are for 99.9% of the population, I certainly didn't take the word "strenuous 8 hours" as seriously as I should have. I didn't try to do the whole hike in 8 hours, but I should have taken more than 2 days. And I'm guessing I'm not the first, nor will I be the last. Sufficed to say, Ken and 2 guys from our hostel have ... read more
