When we were relaxing in Dali, we speculated that we could just spend three months there in comfort and make up the rest of the Blog. Being thoroughly ignorant at that time about the Gorge, the Blog for this bit of travelling would most likely have banged on about being terrified of the tigers and how they were leaping around the place. Well luckily we didn't cop out as Tiger Leaping Gorge is absolutely breathtaking. It is easily the most beautiful natural scenary I've seen anywhere. It doesn't seem to be one of the more well-known tourist spots in China. Indeed many Chinese people I've talked to have no idea about it. But it's been given a romantic name by the Chinese Tourist Board and it's now very much a must-see for travellers in the region. ... read more

It was with great anticipation that we awoke on the Monday morning - holding Tiger Leaping Gorge as one of the potential highlights of our trip to date. We made our way through the maze of Lijiang Old Town for the last time, now devoid of crowds, before hopping on a bus to Quitoa - the start of the gorge. Popping our heads in at Margo's - an eccentric but lovely Aussie lady who stored our big bags, made us coffee and a divine toasted cheese sammo, before pointing us up the road to the route marker that would signal our steep ascent into the gorge. The climb itself was uphill but fairly easy at first opening up glorious views of the valley where two rivers joined, we passed through rural hamlets complete with pigs, mules, ... read more

8/29 - 8/31 Many travelers, as well as the lonely planet, felt strongly that taking two full days to trek through the Tiger Leaping Gorge was well worth our time. A 2hr bus ride from Lijiang brought us to the start of the gorge, where we soon realized we brought entirely too much crap, despite our best efforts to pack light. Jaime and I have both been spoiled by having backpacks with wheels on them, and to be perfectly honest, we have yet to really carry our bags on our backs at all. We foolishly loaded up our day packs with several changes of clothes, our current books (Jaime's 800 page book soon found it's way into my bag), and even ipod speakers for the hike. The 16km trek proved to be a considerable challenge, especially ... read more

Wednesday July 26th I took pictures of Lijiang's Old Town very early in the morning. I managed to find the square almost empty (except for enterprising taxi drivers trying to give me a ride) and got some interesting pictures of the Old Town without a density of people that would be more appropriate on Shinjuku Avenue. I had Muesli, yogurt and fruit breakfast at Well Bistro at 7:30 and made my way to the bus station by 8:30 and hopped on the minibus to Qiatou. It turns out the japanese woman/american man couple that was behind me on the bus to Lijiang were in the same bus as me for Qiatou so we talked for a while. Arriving fashionably almost late, 4 israeli girls entered the bus and one of them sat next to me. Her ... read more
