LIJIANG - May 29 I don't understand how smoking can be permitted on buses. Well really it's not cause there is a no smoking sign but do the chinese listen?...of course not. So of course I got the combo of smoker and hoarker sitting beside me, dumping his ashes and spitting his hoarks in the aisle. Disgusting. He also had a hard time picking something out of his nose. Now I don't know if it was snot or just some nose hair but holy mother was that ever annoying. I had to look away and out the window cause it was totally irritating me but even then I could still feel the vibrations of his actions - fingers in nose and yank. Sheat! Everyone on the bus was chinese 'cept two other foreigners and when ... read more

Kyllähän ... read more

Day 66 Waking for one of Mama's pancakes (which was huge but we struggled through like troopers - especially Rob) we boarded the minibus that was to take us to Qiao Tao and the start of the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek. After getting our tickets for the path we headed up the hill with two groups, ours including Rob, Jillian, Paul, Lindsay, Anya and of course us two and the other a big group from Israel(who were also staying at Mamas). The heat was intense at the start and it was a pretty relentless hill going diagonally up the gorge side, however the scenery just got better and better which helped the walking. As we rounded the headland and entered the gorge we would call home for the next two days, the snow capped peaks ... read more

Tiger Leaping Gorge (Chinese: 虎跳峡; Pinyin: Hǔtiào Xiá) is a canyon on the Yangtze River - locally called the Golden Sands River (金沙江; Jīnshā Jiāng) - located 60 km north of Lijiang City, Yunnan in southwestern China. Around 15 km in length, the gorge is located where the river passes between 5,596 metre Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙山; Yùlóng Shān) and 5,396 m Haba Xueshan (哈巴山; Hābā Shān) in a series of rapids under steep 2000 metre cliffs. Legend says that in order to escape from a hunter, a tiger jumped across the river at the narrowest point (still 25 metres wide), hence the name. Tiger Leaping Gorge is a contender for the world's deepest river canyon, depending on the exact definition used. The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who ... read more

We set off early from Mama Naxi's for Qiaotou. The drive took our packed minibus through some gorgeous scenery. We stopped at a lookout where there were fantastic views of high peaks in the distance. We arrived at the small town of Qiaotou and stopped to buy our entrance tickets for the gorge. We had heard from other travelers that you could present any form of id and get the student discount. I showed them my CO drivers license and sure enough it worked. After picking up our tickets we drove a bit further and then we were let out at the trail head. The hike began with a moderate climb up through a small village. We stopped for a snack at a great sunny spot with our first view of the Yangtze as it ... read more

There are 2 routes you can take from Qiaotou along Tiger Leaping Gorge - the high road, which is a genuine hike, and the low road, which is a surfaced road built to convey buses of tourists to various look-out points and hence doesn't really qualify as a hike. The 2 meet at a point about two thirds of the way through the gorge and there's then a single path to Daju. We decided we'd take the high road then, at the convergence point, return along the low one, as it seemed that there was no particular advantage to continuing all the way to Daju. It's almost impossible to get lost on the high road due to the profusion of coloured arrows pointing the way, not to mention the guesthouse advertisements daubed all over the rocks. ... read more

ANGLAIS The first stage of our trek through the gorge was almost aborted as we'd heard that the rain that had in the previous 4 days had made the trails treacherous and had left some people stuck in the gorge. After consulting with a couple who had yet to start after 3 days hanging around and then to a group who were not planning to do the same, we decided we'd come far enough and that we could give the first two hour stretch a go and see what happened. As it turned out it was no problem at all. Armed with umbrellas and led by Jamais, the daughter of Mama Naxi who's guesthouse we were heading for, we got our first glimpses of Tiger Leaping gorge as Jamais glanced upward from time to time to ... read more

With Mary off in Toyko and Eli and Jaime in Borneo, I was forced to attack China's tiger leaping gorge with some new travel pals. Having spent my time in Dali half independent and half with my new English friends Emily and Katherine (both english teachers in Guangzhou, so there were hours of competing in memorable chinese stories....emily won with the story of rats running over her head just before going to bed). Moving on to Lijiang meant the possibility of meeting up with several CTLC teachers who were also planning on making Yunnan their favorite Chinese province. After a few days for wandering around Lijiang's crowded, twisted cobblestone streets, I met up with Megan and Jen at Mama Naxi's. Easy Tiger On top of my “must see before I'm blind” list sits Tiger Leaping Gorge, a somewhat unassuming rock formation just north of LiJiang which has been described and photographed by just about every travel writer worth their salt, so of course I had to go see it myself. As tough as it was to drag my lethargic body out of the Sexy Tractor bar, it had to be done and it had to be done properly. As the bus turned a bend in the hills I got to see the Yangzi River, at this point known as the Jinsha Jiang, for the first time in my life. As far as being the life-blood of China was concerned it didn't look like much, it is a relatively thin river and when seen from the top ... read more

Yeah this was the trek we had been looking forward to for a long time! Dali and Lijiang were both cool, well preserved old towns but now it was time to say bye to the temples and colorful costumes and see what northern Yunnan is famous for - kick arse mountains. The gorge itself is a 25km trek through some of the most amazing scenery Kako and I had ever seen in our lives, and the bonus was we got the weather! On one side sits 5500m Yulong Xueshan, the mountain we rode to from Lijiang, and on the other side sits 5400m Haba shan. Add to this the Yellow river which slices through the two snow capped peaks some thousand metres below the trekking path, and cool $3 a nite Naxi guesthouses to stay ... read more
