When I started my vacation I knew that I had approximately three weeks to travel around China. The route was from Wuxi to Guilin/Yangshuo (in Guanxi Province), then to Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Tiger Leaping Gorge (all in Yunnan Province). TLG was the last stop on the trip, but it was the place I was the most excited about getting to. My friend and I arranged a mini bus to take us from Lijiang to Qiaotao (2 1/2 hours, 50 RMB each) to begin the hike to Tiger Leaping Gorge. When we arrived at the ticket gate we were greeted by a very enthusiastic Australian woman named Margo who owns the Gorged Tiger Cafe and a guesthouse. She gave us a map, a place to store our excess bags, the use of a very Chinese bathroom, ... read more

So, we left Tokyo, stayed one night in the mountains of Japan - arriving in the evening it was so beautiful, and next day we realised waking up in the middle of a golfing field (what a dissapointment!), came to Kyoto - had a much better time there than last time, and even saw Yoko Ono live (!!), and then we left with the ferry again, this time heading for Shanghai, China. On the ferry I thought the same thought as so many times before on this trip: how happy I am not to fly, and how sad it is for the people that travel by flying - they miss so much, so many wonderful ferrytrips (over whole oceans!) and traintravels (trough big forests, open deserts, high mountains and small villages). Coming to Shanghai, we decided ... read more

Once again conversation opened up more opportunities for us to discover but this time we found we were running out of time so we had to be selective. Dali the old town by the lake, ShaXi the ancient town and famous market or Tiger Leaping Gorge the dramatic valley. We chose Tiger Leaping Gorge and found ourselves up at 7.00 the next morning to be ferried by mini bus with 5 others for a 2 hour drive up into the mountains. We stopped at the start of the trekkers trail and waved goodbye to our travel companions while we boarded a smaller van. The trek takes you up to around 3000m along twisting paths and takes about 5 or 6 hours to get to “Halfway House” By all accounts the views here are great and many ... read more

FINALLY! we arrived at tiger leaping gorge around 10am on the 18th. it is supposedly the world's deepest river canyon/gorge. As we walked down the road to try and find the entrance to the high route (really the only hiking route, the lower route is just a road) we failed miserably and had to hike up to it at the second entrance farther down the low route. I think we were the only morons on the trail with bags over five to ten pounds. my bag weighed around 55 pounds, and i lugged it the whole way for ten hours before we arrived at the halfway guesthouse for the night. while spending the night there i smartened up and lightened my load a bit. we made good friends with a dutch couple and a guy from ... read more

Lijiang and Tiger Leaping Gorge have now become our favourite places in Asia. We thought Dali was pretty but Lijiang old town is so much better. The cobblestone steps are much more like you would have expected them to be hundreds of years ago (whereas it is obvious Dali has been rebuilt). The are all kinds of little winding roads and little canals---it is really easy to get lost in them. It was just out of a Charles Dickens novel but obviously in China. We spent an afternoon exploring the town and getting lost (to be fair rob was much better at not getting lost than I was). We found a very nice guesthouse with a family who spoke very little English. It was more difficult but the house was so cute and the family so ... read more

After a short flight from Lhasa to Shangri-la we expected to walk into the usual airport scene...tons of taxis and black cabs(unmarked taxi drivers trying to make a quick buck) all fighting for the fare...we were wrong. Not a single cab, and only one black cab that was already packed down with people and luggage. Luckily we had made friends with a Tibetan kid that was getting picked up by his friends and had room for a few more stragglers. He knew exactly where our hostel was so we jumped in and headed to our next home. Shangri-la is a very small town that has an old quarter that is pedestrian only. Some vendors served up freshly grilled potatoes and mystery meat while other stuck to the normal jewelery that you see on every corner. It ... read more

Lhasa-Shangri-la-Tiger Leaping Gorge-Lijiang The past few days have flown by as we are realizing we want to head on and see the rest of Asia. After Lhasa we flew to Shangri-la, this supposedly magical city near the Tibetan border. We arrived at the airport expecting to see many taxis or buses to take us into town, but instead the airport was desolate. We had met a young Tibetan man in the airport in Lhasa and luckily he was heading to Shangri-la as well. He offered to have his friend give us a ride into town and drop us off at a hostel he recommended. So we checked into our hostel (bathrooms outside with small walls between stall and no doors) and decided to walk around the city. The main attraction of Shangri-la is the Tibetan temple, ... read more

The morning after the fire riot, I was up bright and early to take a bus to LiJiang, where I planned on taking a three day hike through the Tiger Leaping Gorge. I was planning on doing it alone, hoping to meet people I could join on the trail. However, on the bus I ran into three Irish girls and an Australian guy I’d met in Dali. I convinced them that they should come with me to do the trek in three days rather than two… and off we went, immediately from the bus station. It was great having yet another group of solid friends while traveling. The gorge was beautiful and absolutely worth savoring over a course of three days. The first night, we stayed at a Naxi Family Guesthouse where I introduced the girls ... read more

(Day 116 on the road)After my recovery, I left for the Tiger Leaping Gorge, still feeling a little week after having eaten very little for a week. However, my timing to trek the gorge turned out to be just perfect! During my stay in Lijiang I had seen many people leaving for the gorge only to return back to Lijiang as the trek was closed or even the road to it was shut so the buses had to turn around. As this is rainy season, it does really rain frequently, resulting in landslides on the road and the trek. Also, as we learnt, a foreigner had died just two days ago on the hike, resulting in the closure of the High Road, as it is called. When I arrived at the starting point of the path, ... read more

I guess it was something that I ate, but I woke up and did NOT think I was going to be able to make it on the 27km trek...which was a major blow since it was basically one of the main reasons I chose this trip. My stomach was aching something awful and right up until the moment the bus left, I decided I wasn't going to go. Then, I convinced myself to pull it together and make it a go....after all, life only happens once. The first few hours of the hike were a difficult ascent, which made me extremely nauseous. Luckily all that working out paid off a little. We followed along the side oft the gorge which is known as one of the deepest in the world. Legend has it that it is ... read more
