We were finally on our way to do the long awaited hike up & along Tiger Leaping Gorge. Our bus took us from Lijiang 1 hr & half to the Gorge, which is said to be one of the deepest gorges in the world. It is 16km long and 3900m high. It was hard work but we both thoroughly enjoyed this hike. Once you get past the 28 bends, all the hard work is over. It is like walking across the roof of the world. At every turn you have to stop and take a breath and take in the shear beauty of this incredible landscape. We spent 6 hours hiking on the first day and stayed overnight at the Tea & Horse Guesthouse. The guesthouse had hot water, a double bed and was clean and ... read more

" A beautful flower does not bloom forever" - Naxi proverb So we (me Kathy and Mikk) got up at 6:30am to catch the bus from the new town at 7:20am for Tiger LEaping Gorge. We locked our bags at the youth hostel ( including some of my valuables which probably might not have been the smartest idea but it seemed like it at the time). We got a taxi for 6RMB and arrived at the bus station at 7:10am. Quickly brought a wholesome breakfast of bread and ice cream for breakfast and two bottles of water and headed for the bus. Fell asleep on the bus (while I was asleep Mikk had a fan club on the bus that said he looked like Tom Cruise). We finally got to the start of the gorge and ... read more

This trail along the upper Yangtze River is a great hike. The mountains rise almost 2 miles on both sides of the river. At the narrowest, the gorge is about 100 feet wide. The trail is about 22 miles long, and all along there are local "guest houses" where you can grab a bed, a meal, or a much needed beer. Part of the fun of the trail is hiking with some people for a while, deciding to take a break, and then joining another group for a while. You always seems to manage to see your previous hiking partners or guest house partners somewhere along the way. And there is a lot of comraderie through the whole trail. At first, I was a little disappointed: the trail has such a big rep among backpackers in ... read more

(It's a small world after all!)

The Tiger Leaping Gorge was... gorgeous :-) Yes, I know its an easy one... Friday, April 25th I left the little guesthouse at 9 in the morning. The weather was mild and cloudy. I couldn't see the summit of the mountains. There is a partially tarred road where cars and buses bring tourists groups to the main view points. I soon left that road to follow the upper path that goes gradually up to the first mountain guesthouse. I had a drink on the way and started to climb the so called 28 bends that lead to the top of the pass. Near the top, there is a rock from which there is a stunning view over the gorge. An elderly lady is at the gate and collect a small entrance fee. The rock was “privatised” ... read more

Tiger Leaping Gorge - Jan 08 We booked a coach one day from Lijiang for the following morning to make our way to Quintao, the start of the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek. We got on the bus with other tourists all looking to do the same thing, we were worried about who our company would be for the next two days ( remembering the nightmare aussie couple in Nepal ) but on this occasssion we got lucky ! We did have another Aussie couple, but this time they were really nice people ,also another Aussie lady, an American guy and a nice bloke from South London who we got on with really well. We started our climb up about 10:00am on the first day, it was really steep in places and hard work in the sun, ... read more

I arrived in the village of Qiaotou which is in effect the beginning of the Tiger Leaping Gorge on Wednesday afternoon. Due to my arriving at this time there was no point in beginning trekking that day and I therefore checked myself into a guest house at the foot of the track which leads up to the gorge. There didn't seem to be many other people about and I killed most of the afternoon reading. I'm not very experienced at trekking and had been told that the trek is best done with a partner. One of the main reasons for this is obviously from a safety point of view. Over the years there have been accidents in the gorge some of which have cost people their lives. I was therefore very happy to meet another traveller, ... read more
