Hello everybody! It is 8:05 AM China time, 8:05 pm US time on Thursday, May 21st. Today we will finish touring in Shanghai in the morning and make the 4 hour bus ride to Hangzhou in the afternoon. It will take me several days to get settled in at the university dorm in Shanghai, but until then here is a long update: GENERAL STUFF: You will notice in the photos I have uploaded the smog. Shanghai is blanketed in smog 24/7, and the sun is rarely seen. It is perpetually cloudy here. It truly astounding how bad the pollution is here, but I fortunately I haven't had any problems with my Athsma yet. And Hangzhou will be a bit less polluted as well. Shanghai is by far the craziest place I have ever been. People, bikes, ... read more

Na nas so se spravile prov simpatične enske srednjih let, kitajke_vesele turistke, ... read more

Hi Everyone. I know it has been a long time since we have posted an update. Just me being somewhat lazy and then we did have a lot going on. This is the first thing that happened to us this spring. We were moving along nicely getting the new lease put together for our apartment so we could stay another year and then the landlord decided to sell the apartment. Thank goodness the complex had a few that we could look at so we were able to stay in the same place and actually in the same building. We moved from the 12th floor on one end to the 39th floor (only 4 floors above us) on the other end of the building. We love the view from the new place and it is the exact ... read more

What an amazing vibrant city Shanghai was. It was totally different than the other cities I have been in China. After arrival (like always in china) there was a problem with one of the crew's passport and so we only departed too the hotel 2 hours later. Everyone was passed out in the bus, as it was 'n midnight departure. Arriving at the hotel 4 of us still had some energy and went to the underground market. Well if you have been to one market in china you have been to them all. After the market it was time for dinner and Vlad took us to a restaurant in down town. Wow great food but we were super tired after eating and we took the long train ride back to the hotel and slept like babies. ... read more

How a vacation plan can change so easily. With the Volcano erupting in Iceland and the plumes of volcanic ash over Britain and European Countries, many travellers plans were in disarray or just became unstuck. Airline carriers in Australia had placed embargoes on flights to Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong. This meant Jeffrey and I had to hastily change departure date, flight and hotel accomodation. Not knowing what flight we would get, we rearranged to fly Qantas straight to Shanghai 25 April and stay there for 2 days and fly Air China to Beijing. We have booked to stay at the Le Royale Meridien Shanghai, from there we do self tours. Checking websites with the question Shanghai in one day? The most answer was do pick 3 place to go ... read more

Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai, China The first site to be seen in Shanghai was the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. After waiting in line for about 20 minutes, we took an elevator up the Sightseeing Floor (295 feet above ground). James and I walked around the deck for about 15 minutes and then met up with the rest of the group to jump on another elevator which would take us to the Space Module (863 feet above ground). The Space Module level was by far the most fun level because the floor was made of glass. Seeming the ground below me was pretty nerve-racking but it gave me a small adrenaline rush so I started enjoying it. James wasn't too thrilled about the whole thing and chose to stand on the metal beams vice the ... read more

Wow, cant believe its a week already! The trip to Shanghai started slower then anticipated as the train was delayed by 50 mins but on the plus side the staff were as helpful as they could be. I had no idea where to go when I entered Xi’an station so waved my ticket in front of the ladies face and she took me upstairs and pointed me into a waiting lounge. When it was time to go another lady came to get me and pointed me to the platform. I am travelling “Soft” (first class), this consists of a TV at the end my bed with no reception (if it did have then I wouldn’t understand it anyway) and the bed incidentally is also the seat, this is hard (but actually great for my back). One ... read more

Last weekend we ran in the Jinqiao 8K (5 mile) road race. Jinqiao is a neighborhood in Shanghai. The race was a lot of fun and we had some friends in the crowd cheering for us. We both had race times better than we thought we would. Jason ran 44:45 and I ran 52:33. One of our friends took some pictures for us. The weather was perfect, sunny and around 50 degrees. Now we have to find the next race to train for. ... read more

I made the most of my remaining time stuck in Xi’an. I visited a number of attractions I had already seen just to keep my mind occupied, along with some new ones. I took a bus with the British lads to the Big Goose Pagoda which was markedly different to the seemingly hundreds of other temples I have visited in China. We climbed 16 flights of stairs to the top, bloody knackered and saddened at the state of the fog. Afterward, we had a relaxing stroll around for a while and then hopped on another bus to find a museum. Eventually after wandering around some quaint ‘Hutongs’ we found the Belin Museum of Stone Forests. It wasn’t amazing but I’m glad we went. The buildings were all covered in huge tablets of thick stone, with 1300 ... read more
