I left for Shanghai at 9pm on January 30th. Operating under advice from a friend, I left for the airport at 5:30pm expecting an hour-long commute. It only took me a half an hour because it was mid-afternoon on a weekend, and traffic is not as bad on weekends. I tried to budget time in the airport for confusion and language barriers, however everything went smoothly, and I was seated in my terminal 2 hours before my flight. Oops. I sat around, read and people watched until it was time to board. My flight was packed, and I sat smashed against the window. Thankfully the flight only took two and a half hours. I arrived in Shanghai a little before midnight, and found my way to the hotel-booking counter. The same friend estimated that I could ... read more

Arrived at Pudong international airport and greeted by our pre-arranged chauffer driven limousine, which in China is a mini van. Our English speaking guide barely spoke English, it was a challenge getting to our accommodation at 8.30pm. Finally arrived at the Bund Riverside Hotel at 10.30pm. Dragged ourselves and four large bags, to our room and then collapsed for the night. Next morning, we went to breakfast. Not the usual breakfast you get at home, there was dumplings, rice, vegies, savouries and all the food you would expect for dinner, however we did discover some bacon. That was about the only thing we could recognise as a normal breakfast item. Breakfast cost us about 50 yuan which is around AUD$8.00 each. This is expensive because we ate at the hotel. Later in the morning we went ... read more

The semester is winding down and I’m getting ready for my flight on Sunday. Another teacher, Noelle, and her husband are going to watch Jasper while I’m gone. Right now, I’m packing and cleaning in preparation. On Saturday, I’m going to get a hostel and chill, maybe do something fun, who knows? Anyways, Sunday morning, I’m taking the metro and seeing if it goes all the way to Pudong. (I’m crossing my fingers, because Pudong is actually listed on the metro maps.) My flight is at 9:20AM, so whenever we actually leave, the plane will drop me off in Tokyo. I’ll probably check it out a bit during my layover. Then a few hours later I’m back on an airplane for Hawaii!! I’ll be getting in at 7AM-ish and meeting up with my Dad. Then after ... read more

Happy New Year from Shanghai. It was really incredible to ring in the New Year from a big city. We went out to dinner and then since it was pretty cold out we came home and watched the waterfront festivities on one of the Chinese TV channels. Around 11:00 we walked to the waterfront and celebrated with about 4000 other people. It was a lot of fun. On our way down there we saw a light in the sky and were wondering what it was until we turned the corner and saw about 100 of them. People were lighting lanterns and setting them off into the sky. The buildings were all lit up too. We got some coffee to keep warm and then listened to the bands until it was time for the countdown. At midnight ... read more

I was glad to have left my footprints in Shanghai on the first day of 2010 After a warm reception at the Asset Hotel this morning, I proceeded to roam around the immediate neighbourhood of the Xuhui District. With only 1 full day to explore the megapolis of Shanghai, the mission seemed impossible. I had to be selective in order to cover those places listed in my itinerary. My previous meal was 3.30am in the morning on my Malaysia Airlines flight to Shanghai. With a crying stomach, I decided to stop by at the local eatery opposite my hotel for a feast of the Xiao Long Baos. For the Shanghainese, this was one of their everyday dishes. For a mere SGD2, I could get 10 of those hot steaming buns stuffed with pork and broth. I ... read more

The school that I attend for my Chinese lessons will sometimes have group events so the students can meet each other. The last event was a cooking lesson to make dumplings or in Chinese “Jiaozi”. We all had a wonderful time and after we made our dumplings they were cooked and we had lunch. I hope to make more of these in the future as they are my favorite food here in Shanghai. My Chinese teacher was also the Jiaozi instructor for my room of students. I believe we had three rooms in all. ... read more

On Sunday, November 8th, we went to the Museum of Science and Technology in Shanghai. Overall, I was impressed by the size of this museum. It had an extremely large variety of exhibits which were mostly marked well in English. The building itself was what impressed me the most. The central area is a large geodesic dome. There are also 4 different types of movie theatres - Imax Dome, 3-D Imax, 4-D and Space Theatre, unfortunately, the movies were only in Chinese, so we didn't go to any. There were many areas that we didn't have time to see or went through quickly. The first area we entered was the Animals World, taxidermied displays separated by continent. There was a large amount, and although they were quite close together, they had some interesting poses of ... read more

The Super Brand Mall is definitely bigger than any mall I've ever been to! Now for those of you who know me well, I'm not really much of a shopper, so that doesn't say a lot, but, it is 10 stories high and even has an ice skating rink on the 8th floor! The Chinese call it Zhengda Guangchang. After almost 2 hrs traveling time - a taxi to the metro station nearest our apt, then 3 different metro lines, and a walk across a huge street - with everything we needed for the weekend in our backpacks, we arrived at the mall! This was our first "solo" travel other than by taxi, so we were glad we made it successfully! The Shanghai Metro System is very clearly marked and I had an English metro map ... read more

Nanjing Road is a pedestrian mall that Didi used to visit when she was a teenager. On the way out to Nanjing we saw a nice car...wow - Derek has seen a number of choice cars during our trip including an orange Lamborghini. But today it was a white Ferrari Spider. After running down the mall and a quick bite of lunch we went over to the Oriental Pearl. The top "Space Module" observation deck is at 350 meters...The last time we visted our experience was not great as we were sure we felt it swaying. This time was different and we enjoyed the time we had there and the kids did as well...the clear glass floor at 263 meters was a leap of faith!... read more

A quick train ride from Hangzhou (1.5hr) and we're in Shanghai. The view from the hotel was great. Later in the evening we met with family for dinner at Xiao Nan Guo. The meal and service was excellent. This restaurant is one of many owned by the same group and it has served Chinese President Jiang Zemin.... read more
