Here we go again. Just had to go back to Shanghai and cover more ground at the World Expo as well as spring a surprise to visiting friends who dropped by Manila on their way to China. What a pleasant time to be with friends who have become family over the years! The Pavilions I Missed Last Time Last time I was here with family, we covered all of 16 pavilions in 3 days in 3 zones: Asia (), Europe ( ) and the Americas ( ). While viewing the varied architecture and design of the many pavilions was a thrill by itself, it was quite an experience to actually get inside the pavilion (time permitting, what with the long lines) to view the exhibits and know the countries more intimately. We must have grown more ... read more

since thursday night, i have had laundry to hang up and more to put in the washer. So Friday morning at 9am i met up with Peggy at her house and the four of us (her mom, cousin/sister, her, and I) went to the store. I have to say cousin/sister because there is a one child policy in Shanghai. If you have more than one child, you must pay a fee. Upper class families will have many children. Lower & middle class families call their cousins their brothers and sisters. I took lots of pictures in the store of the different products they told me about and then of her mom cooking. the store was a walmart, most of the pictures are in the last update. There is both dark and light soy sauce and of ... read more

the uploading process scrambled my pictures and the captions for them. i'm not going to correct them because the website is not set up to edit captions and takes too long. sorry guy :-) Whoever says that God is without a sense of humor has never met me. To catch up you guys who didn't read the last entry up to date... my life is slowing down a lot. This is good. I did go out on Saturday night at 1:30am and got back at 5am, but i have had a slow week and been able to stay up late and keep myself sleep deprived for fun. I was depressed over the weekend because none of my latin american or german friends were online. Since the week has started, i'm talking to everyone again. I found ... read more

So at great risk of repeating the same weekend I had last week, I decided to start the weekend the same by going to Peggy's house on Friday. She sister/cousin was there; she is in middle school and around fourteen. She doesn't speak that much english and I had to really drag the english out of her, but it was fun. They are nice good people. Peggy's mom cooked lunch again and I'm afraid that I may be falling for Chinese cuisine. We had the caramelized pork, shrimp, shredded pork, etc. It totaled around eight dishes again. Afterward we decided to make a cake we had been planning and did some research on the internet. We looked at lots of recipes, but in the end Peggy's said she knew how to make a cake. Peggy read ... read more

i left you guys last friday night on july second when i came back from Peggy's house. it was just another saturday, but comparatively normal for my life in china. saturday (the third) i went to a fourth of july party thrown by the American Chamber of Commerce. It was held 40-60 minutes away from a hotel we met at. we took the freeway the whole time and the place were arrived at was still in shanghai. it was a massive resort. i got lost there and wound up in a giant theater used for movies. no one was there though. we took a bus to get there. there were buses leaving every half hour and we couldn't take the first one at 10:30 because it was full. we left on the 11am one and arrived ... read more

Time flies...不知不觉, my 2 months stint at the World Expo has finished. It was a very apprenhensive start, from the day my big boss broke this "stressful" news to me that I'll replacing a colleague to do some comms work. Something I've no relevant experience in. But oh well, whatever falls on me, I'll just take lor, nothing to lose I guess. But after 2 months, I come to realise, it's actually a blessing in disguise! 1. Comms work is a new field to me, definitely a great exposure for me. Contacts of the local publications and media come in handy later. 2. Had fun dealing with the VIP visits, met many important figures, just to name one, MM Lee is enough to leave behind a lifelong impression. 3. The most important! I'm so so so ... read more

Captain's Log Stardate 20:41:01::06:29:2010 Location Shanghai China on the day i turned 21, June 29th, i watched chile y brazil in the play offs for the world cup. it came on at 2:30 am in China and i watched the whole thing. instead of sleeping though work the next day, i called in sick. i do nothing there anyways. i Instant Message-ed my boss because i don't have her number and calling the company would be pointless since no one else speaks english. i assumed she would get the message when she arrived, but she was in an car accident. she is fine, but she arrived very late which meant the other american intern called me. she only works 2 days a week and i work 4 days. i wrote and mailed 6 post cards last ... read more

so since my last entry, i have decided spend a lot more money. i bought the deep fried meat (chicken or pork) covered in sauce like i did yesterday, but i found two today. different sauces, so i bought them both. they were expensive... 8 and 9 yuan for a plate of boneless meat. i will be eating these until i return to the states. i also bought a very good juicy steak for 14 yuan. it hurt to spend so much, but it tasted great. i love meat. eating meat makes me happy. i added the peppers from my chow mien (5 yuan) to the steak when i cooked it. it was the most painful smell ever. worse than anything i ever did in my house in clovis. ha ha ha. and the smell didn't ... read more

We arrived in Shanghai on the 22nd. During our 4 and a half day stay, we endured the World Expo for 4 of those days. The Expo brought out the most cut-throat Chinese people I have ever seen in my life. These people had endurance and all sorts of tactics that you just wouldn't ever expect to see in your life. These are some of the highlights and common sights of the expo: - LONG LONG LONG line-ups: It seems that everyone but us had raided the mini-stool and chair store before heading to the expo. Most people would squat down on these micro chairs during the horrific lines on the way into the pavilions. They also packed an entire kitchen of everything you can imagine, loafs of bread, buns, miscellaneous meat bags, cucumbers, apples, etc. ... read more
