My friend was dreaming of the crab at the night market. What can I say? She loves her seafood. Boy, was she disappointed! 50 quai for a crab with hardly any meat and a small lobster. I don't eat street food because I have a "sensitive stomach" and refuse to pay the price that street food may dish out. After the disappointing crab experience we wandered over to the foreign language book store, but it was closed. I have yet to get to that book store while it is open, yet another disappointment. The good news is that we wondered into a Japanese restaurant and my friend ordered some squid on a stick and spring rolls. I tried one of the spring rolls. Not bad.... read more

Another trip downtown to pick up another batch of altered bottoms... I bought another blanket because it's getting colder and let's face it, we spent the last four years in Florida...enough said, am I right? We stopped in at a Korean restuant and they were kind enough to make some vegetarian kim-bob and pan fried tofu with "no MSG." Both were very good. I'd go back there anytime to get out of the cold again this Winter when when I'm bumming around downtown. Unfortunately, my favorite juice place was all boarded up. He closes down when it turns cold, but yesterday was a warm day. What a bummer! I was so sad. Getting fresh fruit juice was the highlight of my weekend. He had the only Vit-a-mix in town too. Boo-hoo. We stopped in at The ... read more

We went on a class trip to the CCTV Park on the outskirts of Weihai. Since, I've been to most of the theme parks in Orlando, this park seems, well, to put it nicely, run down, but the kids had a blast and that's what counts. So, if you are going with the kids, by all means spend the 30 yuan it costs to get in. I was, however, a little confused on the theme. They had fairy tale statues Southwest/American Indian style statues, and dinosaur statues. Hmmmm...... read more

I just happened to notice the great hair cut my friend had and she told me to go see Andy at Gongzi and so I did. He did a fantastic job! It is tough cutting my hair because I have some unexpected curly bits that kind of make it difficult to get right, but Andy cut it and then he blew dried it in sections and then went back through and re-cut each section. I'll go back to again soon to see if they can match my hair color. ... read more

I had to run downtown to pick up some jeans and a pair of khaki Dockers I had altered at tailor's row. I also dropped off two more pair of pants to have altered too. After I go back to my neighborhood, I stopped off to drop off a key to my neighbor downstairs and apparently she had a big blow out with her landlord. (He was supposed to be my landlord, but she got here before I did, so the apartment went to her. First come, first served.) I didn't hear the commotion. The walls are insulated really well here. I guess the landlord was mad because she had her lock changed, but with good reason. He would go in there and snoop around when she wasn't home. I would have done the same thing ... read more

We went back to tailor row after a short stop at the Korean dentist. My friend's tooth broke about a week and a half ago. She had to go back to get the crown put on. Since the dentist was close to Government Square, we decided to walk downtown, but not before she bought a pair of awesome navy blue boots with a gold zipper. How she wears spiked heels in the snow I have no idea, but she says she did it all the time in Russia, so I guess she is used to it. Me, personally, I'm an Uggs kind of girl. I don't actually own a pair of Uggs, but I plan on getting a pair. I will probably have to order them off the internet, sigh... Anyway, the tailors did a fantastic ... read more

This time on my weekly trek downtown, I met my friends. Unfortunately, I missed bus 31 as it was barreling down the main drag, just as I turned the corner. So I caught bus 110, which was a good thing as I didn't recognize my stop and wound up at The Small Commodities Market. At which point, I called my friend and she spoke to the kindly bus driver, who assured her that he would deliver me downtown in about 10 minutes time. He was very nice to me, he gave me a pouch of milk. That was kind of unexpected. We went to our usual noodle hang out, but this time I skipped the noodles (I had bakery products for breakfast - that's enough wheat for one day as far as I'm concerned) and decided ... read more

Every year on October first the Peoples Republic of China celebrate the founding of modern China. I personally don't recommend going farther than walking distance from your home because the buses are packed to the gills. Originally, that is what I told myself, but as usual my adventurous side got the best of me. I already recounted my encounter with the ice cube in a previous post, but I also wandered around downtown and had a good time with the locals. The place was hopping with activity. The area with the street food vendors was packed with tables and chairs everywhere. The walkway and streets were strewn with litter and some drunk tried to get me to drink with him, um...I don't think so. I wish I would have taken more pictures. Anyway, I saved a ... read more

We went downtown again. I just can't resist going downtown. I love it down there so much. My friend says that there is a lot of competition, so the prices are cheaper. I would have to agree with her. The prices are cheaper and the selections are phenomenal. You just have to be adventurous and check out all the little nooks and crannies. Oh yea, they have an Apple store there too. I'll post more about that later. It's a little difficult to find, so I'll dedicate an entire post on how to find it. Now back to my story. Once we got off the bus, we got handed some free roasted chestnuts. Now, I'm from the "Buckeye State" and I've never had a roasted Chestnut. Let me tell you something, they are good. Kind of ... read more

Ahhh...another trip to beautiful, friendly downtown Weihai. I was fortunate enough to snag the last manly looking Christmas themed blanket (for my teenage son - who still cares about these sort of things) for 30 quai at the little stall just inside of the building where the tailors are located. Most of the blankets and sheets in China are brightly colored floral patterns. Enough said. Bought some more of that date bread and some rolls. I was going to make little slider burgers, but the hamburger meat went bad, so I had to pitch it and make little chicken sliders. Not quite the same thing. but passable. Another trip to our noodle shop. 15 quai for two bowls of noodles and a Coke. Oh yea, I'm addicted to Chinese Coke-a-Cola. Not the reddish counterfeit kind with ... read more
