While in Beijing I couldn’t not go to the Great Wall of JinShanLing (金山岭长城), especially since Becky had never been. This is one of my absolute favorite places in China, and I have no doubt you will understand why as you go through our pictures. This part of the Great Wall is located in Hebei province, which means that it’s a bit far away from Beijing city center. It takes a long time to get to the Wall and we had to get up early, but it also means that there are very few tourists there. We hardly saw anyone (but French tourists!!) as we walked for 6 hours (back and forth) on the slowly collapsing Wall. JinShanLing is a breathtaking site. The view it offers is simply majestic. I love it there! Becky had ... read more

Well here we are again but this time in China! I really did not want to leave Japan as I enjoyed it so much over there however I was ready for my next challenge. And it was a big one... After getting up at 6am to make my 7am train to the airport I was pretty tired, sleep deprived from the snorers in my room! I was taking 2 flights, Tokyo to Shanghai and then Shanghai to Beijing, simple right?? Oh noooooo! I landed in Shanghai to be ushered off the plane, frogmarched through immigration and the straight to the next boarding gate, I thought there would be time for food seeing as I did not get fed on the plane as there were no vegetarian options, great start. So there is a very hangry Boom ... read more

I've flown hundreds of times over the years, but the miracle of high-speed, long-distance jet travel never ceases to amaze me. So much so that whenever we travel overseas, Andi teases me because I inevitably say something like: "Can you believe that just yesterday we were walking the dog back in Rye and now we're in (FILL IN THE BLANK AMAZING LOCATION.)" Well, Andi wouldn't have been surprised to hear me repeating that refrain this morning when I found myself climbing the steep steps of the Great Wall of China surrounded by thousands of Chinese tourists. We "did" the wall at Badalang, the most visited and most touristy of the Great Wall sites, because we wanted to see it as the average Chinese person would. Apropos of that, our adventure began by taking the subway at ... read more

Ni Hao... read more

AT SEA DAY ONE FROM SHANGHAI TO XINGANG (BEIJING) - Woke up and took a shower this morning, but today I set up the shower with my glasses on, discovered that I was washing my body with shampoo and washing my hair with body soap. The Mariner Society was treated with a champagne brunch. I sat at a table of ten, the lady next to me from Texas was celebrating her 70thbirthday, a male couple from Honolulu and me; the rest were from Australia Anticipated Mass for Palm Sunday was well attended and after that I went to the Ocean Bar for a Philippine and a Japanese beer. I had to get dressed for dinner at the Canaletto Restaurant, an Italian restaurant with a limited menu but well done. I was beginning to dine alone when ... read more

My arrival in Beijing was the end of my 12th trip around the world; and onward travel would be the beginning of my 13th RTW as it all started here in 1949; not in Beijing itself, but in Xiahe, China (home the the Labrang Monastry), which Will and I will visit in a couple days. As mentioned in my previous blog, this trip kind of evolved; and it wasn't without moments of anxiety. I had surgery for a broken ankle on 6 February, six weeks and one day before the trip was to start. I met with my surgeon on 18 March where he declared I was healed, although the soft tissues would continue to heal over the next six months. I could get rid of the crutches, but should wear the black boot (think ski ... read more

Hi All Does anyone have experience of travelling Asia with a child? My daughter is 5 years old and early next year me and the hubby are planning on taking a month out from work and travelling through China, Vietnam, cambodia and Thailand (if we can fit it all in!) Anyone come across any families travelling with small children? I think it would be a fabulous experience for her but some friends and family say we're mad for thinking about taking her on this trip. Help! Thanks Lisa... read more

We went to the Great wall, like (I think) every one, from Beijing ! Don't be abused, and be careful about the buses. There are offical, unofficial, without stops, with 50 stops... I can't remember well the price, but it was 12 yuans I think. Try to ask the better you can, because drivers never speak english of course. But, there are agents in front of official buses. The trip from Beijing is around 45mn, you can see the wonderful hills all around Beijing, and parts of the great wall, it's very pleasant. Of course, at the bus stops, you have a lot of shops selling souvenirs, foods, drinks... You have to cross its, to get to the old guards buildings, then you can begin to climb the great wall ! I'm sure you didn't think ... read more
