About the Great wall, I can say that a dream come true. Since I was a kid, I watched so many documentaries about it and dreaming one day to be there on it. I visited the Great Wall from Beijing, precisely, in Badaling. Badaling is a quite touristic place and it was not my first choice, at the beginning, because I heard of more secluded parts of the Wall with very few tourists and more adventure. But I did not have that much time to visit far away places and I decided to choose the most convenient one and headed to Badaling.A train trip till there was about one hour and a half from Beijing central station (try to get there early in the morning to avoid masses of tourist). A bit of ... read more

I climbed the Great Wall today, as I lifted my feet to climb each step, I thought about the countless number of people that perished trying to build the wall. Great amount of toiling and labor went into this GREAT wall. I neglected to mention that I am a celebrity here in China, today the camera's were extra busy, people stop and ask to take pictures with me, most of them have never actually seen a "black person" in real life. Women, men, teenagers, elderly, familes with small children all asking for pictures. It is sight that you cannot believe, they line up, some times in groups, smile and utter something in a unknown language, which I know means "can I take a picture with you", sometimes that just try to sneak a picture without you ... read more

Hey everyone! On Saturday we (finally!) made it to 長城 (chángchéng, the Great Wall). Even I'm impressed that we have been here for over two months and have just made it to the Great Wall! I'm glad we made it though, because it was just as beautiful and amazing as everyone says it is. We went to 金山嶺 Jīnshānlǐng, a part of the Great Wall that is less popular with tourists. I thought it was less popular because it is a three-hour drive outside of the city, but I didn't realize that there was more to it than that. It turns out that the portion of 長城 that we visited is known for being incredibly hilly. It ended up taking us four hours to hike through 15 towers of the Great Wall; when I use the ... read more

A great day at the Great Wall Todays plan: go for a hike, starting at the old part of the wall in a village called Jiankou and ending at the touristic area of Mutianyu. The hike itself seems to be not that big problem for us but the logistics. Why? Jiankou is an area north of the wall with several villages Xizhazi 1 to Xizhazi 6, about 100km away from Beijing. Mutianyu is a village south of the wall. The tour starts at Xizhazi 2 without any signs. Access to this part of the wall is restricted. Before we could start the tour we had to research GPS waypoints, village names in chinese characters, bus lines, time tables and so on. Absolutely time consuming! ... don't try to ask a taxi driver for Xizhazi 2. Always ... read more

Im... read more

2600ft above sea level. Clinging onto a rock with a steep drop below us and the worlds longest man-made structure right in front of us. Chris already with a badly swollen knee, P in survival mode and a Chinese lad (we should really know the name of) completely terrified. Anxiety levels sky high, adrenaline pumping and all wondering how in the world did we get ourselves in such a predicament. Visiting the Great Wall of China should be a joyous and momentous occasion for any visitor. To physically stand on history and be in awe of its enormity. Somehow in our pursuit for that we ended up almost at the complete opposite end of that spectrum. However lets start at the beginning: Beijing - home to 30million people and 6 UNESCO world heritage sites (Egypt has ... read more

As our car travelled higher and higher up the narrow mountainside road, mist rose from the deep valleys. High overhead ravens circle, the only sound being their caws echoing from one mountain peak to the next. We have been traveling for three hours since leaving the capital of Beijing. We sensed our destination was near. As we turned a sharp bend in the road, our driver pulls over and says in Chinese, “out of gas”. Erin and I look at each other. How does someone who makes a living driving people around run out of gas? As I strain to look at the dashboard; sure enough, the needle is below the red. He says he has enough gas to get back down the mountain and into the town of Huairou to refill. Erin and I shrugged ... read more

The Great Wall of China and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Park Our fantastic experiences and ticking yet another thing off our ‘Bucket List’ continued today. We were off to see the Great Wall of China, and the 2008 Olympic Games sites. First, we visited the Olympic Games site. The National Stadium or affectionately "Bird's Nest", in Chaoyang District is a major landmark and a lasting symbol of the 2008 Olympic Games. Two contemporary buildings in the District are remarkable landmarks: the CCTV Building (sometimes called "The Underpants" or "Bird Legs" by locals) and the World Trade Centre Tower III. Both are outstanding examples of contemporary architecture. It is a huge area and we only saw a small portion of the whole complex in the hour that was allocated to the visit. From there we drove to ... read more

Beijing 11 to 15 May 2015 The train trip to Beijing took about 2 ½ hours. It’s such an efficient way to travel. We arrived in this city of 22 million people and our bus was waiting for us. We took about 45 minutes to drive to our hotel (the Hilton), but the approach to the hotel was interesting. We seemed to drive around in circles because of the one way streets. We ended up driving across a canal 3 times to get to the other side of the road which was where our hotel was. We were welcomed with a warm chocolate cookie and a presentation by the hotel manager who was from England but could speak fluent Chinese. It was a big hotel where we had a buffet breakfast each day, featuring a large ... read more
