Jin Shan Ling
a section of the Great Wall of China located in the mountainous area in Luanping County, 125 km northeast of Beijing.
While in Beijing I couldn’t not go to the Great Wall of JinShanLing (金山岭长城), especially since Becky had never been. This is one of my absolute favorite places in China, and I have no doubt you will understand why as you go through our pictures. This part of the Great Wall is located in Hebei province, which means that it’s a bit far away from Beijing city center. It takes a long time to get to the Wall and we had to get up early, but it also means that there are very few tourists there. We hardly saw anyone (but French tourists!!) as we walked for 6 hours (back and forth) on the slowly collapsing Wall. JinShanLing is a breathtaking site. The view it offers is simply majestic. I love it there! Becky had never been impressed by the Great Wall. I suppose it’s like us French looking at the Eiffel Tower. It’s always stood there but how often do we go up the Tower? I was very pleased to see her enjoy the vistas and when by the end of the day she admitted it was a spectacular place, I felt extremely content. Enjoy the photos!

Here is an extract from my next book on IELTS that should be published before March 2014.
Tell me about a historic site you have visited. You should say:
where the place is and if it is famous
what you learned from the place
whether many people go there and explain how you felt when you went there. A Historic Site:
1. The Great Wall (around Beijing and Hebei). I went there 2 weeks ago.
2. Why was it built? When was it built?
3. What does it look like? Why is it so famous? (It’s massive, gigantic, huge!)
4. What does it represent? = Chinese history, heritage, power; the Chinese can build anything!
5. People think the Great Wall can be seen from the moon! It’s not true, but it means the G.W. is spectacular, impressive = one of the Wonders of the World.
1. Let me tell you about the most famous monument
(历史遗迹) we have in China. I’m sure you will have guessed
I am talking about the Great Wall. The Great Wall can be visited outside of Beijing, in Hebei province, but also in other places in the northwest of China towards Gansu Province. My parents took me to Beijing 2 years ago and we spent a day on the Wall. I will never forget it!
2. First of all
, I should tell you a little about the history of this monument. The Great Wall was built
during the Qin Dynasty almost 2000 years ago by the Emperor called Qin Shihuang. It was built in order to protect the kingdom
(=country) against northern enemies. However,
when we visit the site near Beijing these days we can see parts of the Wall that date back to
the Ming Dynasty, that is to say only 600 years ago.
3. The Great Wall looks like a dragon unwinding above the mountains
(一条龙盘旋在山脉之上). It is a massive
(=huge) construction that goes on forever in the horizon
(延绵不绝的). I think this is why it is so famous: because of its size. It is absolutely gigantic
(=huge). When I went there I took hundreds of pictures. It is such a picturesque
the kind of place where it’s impossible to take one bad picture; it’s such a beautiful and inspiring
4. Furthermore, the Great Wall has become a symbol of China. It represents
our history, our cultural and historical heritage
(遗产), and it also symbolizes
(=it’s a symbol of) power, determination
(决心) and ambition
(雄心). The Great Wall represents the fact that the Chinese people can build anything. In my country, we say that “he who has not stepped on the Great Wall cannot become a hero.”
5. Finally, it is said that some people believe that the Great Wall can be seen from the moon. Although
it is not true, it means that the Great Wall is truly a spectacular
(壮观的) and stunning
monument. It really deserves to be considered one of the 7 Wonders of the World
(世界七大奇观之一). STRUCTURE: This place represents (=symbolizes) our history, our heritage (遗产), and culture.
-The Great Wall represents our history and heritage
. It was built more than 2000 years ago.
-Old architecture represents our history and heritage
. It should be protected.
-Legends (神话传说) represent our history and cultural heritage
. Parents and teachers must make sure children
learn about them.
