Hidakai has finally submitted to the tummy bug that has been plaguing him since arrival and decided to stay in the hotel room so he is providing today’s update The first task of the day was to get the train station to buy our tickets this involved a much more sedate drive to the station in a cab, I believe the hotel must have a line to a special company of slow taxi drivers so as not to worry silly foreigners. We then had to cross a four lane highway to get to the station as the bridge was being rebuilt. The Chinese pedestrian was not dismayed they simply stepped across the pedestrian crossing regardless of green or red men or hooting busses and cars proceeding forming a human wall that emerged Moses like unharmed on ... read more

With our late arrival our local guide has put us on even more compressed schedule. Today, we are visiting the Tiananmen Square, Emperor Palace, Summer Palace, and the Great Wall. Tiananmen Square is just as I remembered it to be except it was filled with vendors selling counterfeit Beijing 2008 Olympic caps. As we enter the Emperor Palace, I was pleasantly surprised how beautiful all the buildings were. With exception to the ceremonial building (this restoration will not be completed until the end of 2008) the palace has been beautifully restored. It was not until we reached the emporor's living quarters did I noticed that my camera was not working. You can sort of peek how beautiful the restoration is. How disappointing that it was all black... read more

Day 2 of Beijing: Breakfast, Tiananmen Sq, Forbidden City, Silk Market, Hand Pulled Noodles MMM and I got out of the hotel around 9:00 and had breakfast at a nearby Chinese restaurant and had small steamed buns and complimentary soy milk. We then headed to Tiananmen and the Forbidden City. Too bad the weather was overcast and pretty hazy. As you can tell in the pictures, Beijing looked pretty dismal that day. The haze is a mixture of fog and pollution (eew). MMM and I thought the haze added to the Communist feel. Don't be fooled: haze doesn't mean that the sun was hiding and that the weather was comfortable. Why didn't the sun burn through that haze? It was hot! We spent an extra 15 rmb on a ticket to walk to the top of ... read more

So comes the last day of my planned trip through China with Imaginative Traveller. Today again was to prove a tuff one. We set out to Tinanmen Square, The Forbidden City and The Summer Palace. Tinanmen square is by far the largest square in the world encompassing the main building for China including 'The great Hall Of The People', 'Chairman Mao's Memoral Hall' and 'The Momument To The People'. Another crazy hot day made this a difficult but very interesting experience. The Forbidden City followed again let down by renovation works but still a sight to behold. The films and documentaries that I have seen on this place do it little justice, it's huge grounds and structures are facsinating. Lunch followed the a trip to the Summer Palace, by this time the group and I ... read more

Forbidden city or as I will always remember it as Midden City. You walk into the city at the northern end of Tianmenen Square. At the start there is the Entrance Gate Tower. I opted to pay the extra money to go up and see the few from there. What was a simple idea, turned out to be a pain. I first had to check my small ruscak into a storage locker and then go though metal detectors and since I always set them off, I was searched. After 10mins of waiting in queques and going though this I reached the top only to see the view of the Midden city blocked. Looked across towards T. Square, but it wasn't worth the hassle. Onwards I went into the City. Had lots of people ask me ... read more

Brought the Furlongs up to speed; dragged 'em outta bed kicking & screaming at 6.45. Actually, neither achieved consciousness before 7, but the improvement was noted. The Rough Guide had warned that one needed a plan to tackle sprawling Beijing and, with a single ay to absorb the Chinese capital, I had devised a demanding itinerary and put on my Commie taskmaster boots. Citizens Furlong & Furlong were thus marched from Tian'anmen Square to Zhenyangmen Gate to the huge Forbidden City to Jingshan Park to the Temple of Heaven, all without the aid of a tour bus. 11 hours later, Chairman Osmotherly conducted his loyal and exhausted comrades to the People's Restaurant of Yushan where worker style water beer was served. Back to the kick off of the day; Tian'anmen Square, or the world's largest ... read more

Can you say "culture shock"!?! We have been preparing for this day for many months and felt we were ready. We had the great fortune of meeting Lisa and Mr. Dong, our personal tour guide and driver while in Beijing. The weather was warm, about 88 degrees F and fairly humid. The city was shrouded in a haze, but we were on our way. We started with a breakfast in the hotel which was a great buffet and probably the best breakfast we have had since the tour began. It didn't take more than a few minutes looking around to realize that everyone in the cafe was english (Aussie, Kiwi, Brit, Scottish, Irish, Canadian or American). This made for a pleasant exchange between tables. Punctuality matters in China, so we moved to the lobby to ... read more

Impression of our last few days in China - Part 2 And now the end is near ........................ Impression of Ti'amen Square and the Forbidden City Summary: Today a photo impression of the Forbidden City and Ti'amen Square. Enjoy the pictures. See you next time. Monkey and Bear.
