Wow......... so we've arrived... To be honest I couldn't tell you how many kilometres I've travelled without checking but I spent 8 straight nights on trains and I didn't have a real shower for all that time so perhaps the actual mileage doesn't count for as much as you'd think......... This is going to be a rubbish round up so I apologise - I have to get the travel companions up to do some exploring (and get some breakfast) soon......... The Leaving Week Again, sorry for the brevity because I enjoyed my last week so much I almost didn't leave! It started of with being at my Mum's in Llandeilo, just hanging out with the fams and drinking vino.... ah lovely :-). Me and mum spent the day together on Monday and have ice cream, i ... read more

Ni hao world ... How r u doing out there in your remote places ? We hope the spring is spoiling you with the first warm sunbeams. If you're still curious about how we're doing on our trip and what happened over the past days, take a short break, sit back and listen for the breaking news from Asia. Nepal definitely impressed us a lot with its warm and mystic charme, the open-hearted people, its various flavours, roots, traditions and certainly the stunning nature. We always tried to give our maximum respect and jumped at almost all opportunities which this amazing playground has to offer. After some serious Rafting action in the Bote Khosi river and Canyoning (Abseiling) in the rocks and waterfalls of the highlands near Tibet, we set off for a 7 days trekking ... read more

Or: Lest suddenness happens On our last day in Beijing, we were supposed to visit the Summer Palace and the Pandas. To our credit, we realize exhaustion when we see it and we decided to indulge ourselves with a few extra hours of rest. So we cancelled the Summer Palace in favor of the pandas, ostensibly for Ian’s benefit but who can resist the furry little guys? For anyone who has endured the long lines at the Washington zoo in the summer at the panda exhibit, may I suggest the Beijing zoo? Oodles of pandas, no waiting. It was interesting to be able to see so many pandas up close. And we got great pictures. As our guide pointed out, pandas are (1) bears and (2) omnivores (with an odd preference for bamboo, which, by the ... read more

Our Tour Group Several of you have asked about our tour group. There are four bus loads of us on this Collette Vacation. We have people from Texas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and of course Pittsburgh and Baltimore. One of our tour mates is a lovely lady named Fran. Fran is an older lady (let's say she would love Lawrence Welk), who has traveled alot. She was enthralling us with her recent adventures to Alaska. She mentioned at dinner last night that the high school that she taught at in Ohio called Wilton Woods was here in China performing several choral concerts around the country. She talked about how much she would love to see them. We at the table didn't think more about this because China is a big country and what's the ... read more

First let me start by saying it is now 11:15pm and Aunt Linda has me up typing on the blog, knowing darn well 6:00am comes fast and early and it will be like moving the Rock of Gilbratar to get me out of bed! I will be skipping breakfast tommorrow to get that xtra hour of zzz's. Toilets-This has been byfar the biggest adjustment for ME and most of the tour group here in China. Linda is well accoustomed(don't know how or why) but I have found a loop hole! Use the handicapp bathrooms while you are here in China, they have raised or should I say "westernized" toliets. But the bathrooms do not have toliet paper, due to the fact the Beijing's sewer system is so poor. You may bring your own TP, but you ... read more

Or: Without doubt, things are big here Today, we sightsaw. Our ambitious schedule included Tian'Anmen Square in the morning, then the Forbidden City, then the City Planning Museum, then the Temple of Heaven. Lunch at the Wahaha restaurant and a Peking Duck (err, Beijing Duck) dinner. We killed the visit to the freshwater pearl factory (?). If you think that sounds ambitious, you should try it with a five year old whose body clock is off by 12 hours. I would say that I would never do something like this again, but tomorrow we are going to see the Great Wall, then Olympic venues, then a cloissone factory and a banquest dinner. If you think this is insane, yes. But after the 14 hour flight, everything seems possible. Tian'Anmen Square is huge. It is the "largest ... read more

Or: Before you can begin, you must abuse your body by staying in something like the fetal position for 14 hours and eat really bad food. Hi everyone, Finally arrived in China. All I can tell you about the flight is that it was 14 hours long and definitely something to be avoided. When we checked in at Dulles Airport in DC, the airline offered us upgrades to Business Class for $640 a person and to Economy Plus for $120 a person--and although Becky and I both agree it was a good idea to not spend the money, by hour 6 I was wondering whether spending the two grand wasn't the right thing after all. The worst thing about the flight is the time difference. Since China apparently does not have daylight savings time, the time ... read more

Hong Kong Blog Just had 4 days in HK and feel knackered. It is a full on city and everything concentrated, nothing diluted. As space is short the city seems to exist on the vertical. There are shops, stalls and markets at ground level, cars, trams and buses at ground level up to level 3 on suspended roads, restaurants from basements through ground to level 6 (in our hotel) level 11-13 in the shopping mall next to us and upwards in the posh hotels. Our room was on the 28th floor and we looked up vertically to see the top of the building next to us. Regarding shopping Carol said she would be sick if she saw another Chanel shop - there is every luxury brand here - including at least 4 shops solely selling Rolex ... read more

Yesterday I decided to walk through Tiananmen Square again and then visit the forbidden city which was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the world's largest palace complex covering 74 hectares with 9,999 buildings. Needless to say it took awhile to walk around. After the city I checked out a local food market. I passed on the snake, scorpion and testicles and opted for kiwi on a stick. For dinner a few of us went to a Korean BBQ restaurant and had a great meal. We didn't order the dog (it was on the menu) but instead went for beef, pork, yams, mushrooms and sushi. They had a BBQ on the table and we just grilled it up on the spot. On Tuesday I took off for the silk market. This ... read more

Last weekend was my first major side-trip since I have been in China. My roommate Aaron and I undertook the massive task of seeing the sights of Beijing in a mere three days. Our plan was to take a sleeper train up there on Thursday night so that we could arrive by Friday morning and spend all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday sightseeing then return by sleeper train on Sunday night and arrive back in Changzhou in time for our classes on Monday. The first part of the plan went well. Our sleeper train ride on Friday night was long, but we made it to Beijing by about 9:00 in the morning and headed straight to Tiannamen Square. We got ripped off on the taxi ride over, but otherwise we arrived safe and sound. Tiannamen Square ... read more
