FORBIDDEN CITY ( 06.02.2008) As our hostel is behind few corners there was no rush for us to get us this morning. It was slightly disappointing as there was scaffolding on the main temple . As soon as you step into the city you get sense of different world. I can only imagine how beautiful it must of been when this city was in it's pride and not full of tourist with cameras. As we do, without any plans what we want to see and have all day for it, well till 3.30 we wonder around . Saw beautifully, extraordinary art and architecture but you can get easily lost and without proper plan you just don't have time to see it all in one day. And as we have missed out on couple of the major ... read more

Easy All, Seems like we've been planning and planning for far too long for a trip that has always been in the on the horizon and in the distance. Now we're only a few days away we're not sure we've planned enough! Oh well, I suppose the weather in China this week would have thrown a few spanners into even the best, NASA engineered plans. Lets just hope Beijing is unfrozen and moving again by Sunday! In reality I supposed we're as ready as we can be and are just looking forward to going. The countdown to beijing an beyond is on. Wish us luck! Love Ree and Suzie... read more

It has begun! Well, let's start with the trip up. I had to fly to Sydney to catch the International flight to Beijing, got to Sydney, made it to International - no problems. Boarded at Sydney, and was stuck on the tarmac for an hour as someone decided they weren't going to travel so they had to get their bags off. Slightly annoying, but what can you do? Anyway, after a 21 hour long day I got to Beijing hopped in a taxi and the language barrier was reached, lucky I had a map of where the hostel was, although even then it didn't do much good! But despite the difficulties I got to my hostel and was pleasantly surprised at how clean and tidy it is. This doesn't mean I got a good night's sleep ... read more

Jing Shan Park just north of the Forbidden City seemed to meet all of the requirements to start my day of exploration of what is left of Imperial China. After all, the pavilions on top of the hill at the center of the park command a perfect bird’s view of the Forbidden City below (Officially named “Palace Museum” by the Chinese government). Perhaps the most interesting part of the experience was to see normal Chinese people’s version of a Sunday in the park. Men and women of all ages were dancing and singing to the tune of traditional music delivered to the park in much more modern ways (such as with boom boxes). After a taxi brought me from my hotel and delivered me to one of the entrances to the park, I quickly climbed Prospect ... read more

Hi Everyone, I'm having a great time in China. I'll have to let the photos talk for themselves cos internet connections aren't so hot here. I got to visit the Great Wall at Badaling, the FObidden City, The Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and too many jade, pearl and herbal medicine stores. Managing to find my way around with no troubles. I get to take off on my own adventures between the planned events. Just ate a dumpling meal of unknown contents. Tasted great! You don't ask too many questions about food in China. For those of you I haven't talked to in a while, I'm on facebook under Richard Johns so look me up. Take care all. Cheers, Richard ... read more

Ok so I admit that most of my blogs so far has been written retrospectively. It's not that easy finding a computer and I'm not that keen on spending my entire trip cooped up in front of one. So you will get 3 entries in a row now, and I'll try my best to update you correctly. Ok, here goes: I arrived in Beijing on Friday 5th October and made it to my hostel with a kiwi couple I met on the train, who, coincidentally were staying at the same place as me. It was a nice hostel, quiet and clean with friendly (English speaking!!!) staff. I was sad to have ended my Trans Siberian journey, but happy to start a new adventure. Most of my fears start now, knowing that the unkown awaits- I love ... read more
