I am doing much better than last time I wrote. I have adjusted got into a routine and life is full of excitment and adventure. Seeing the forbidden city on a weekend was not the smartest idea I have ever had. I realized this as soon as i stepped onto the already overcrowed bus. But I decided to go ahead and go rather than sit around my apartment. I had a very nice tour guide who knew a lot of history which made me very happy even if he did repeat himself several times because his English was erratic. ... read more

30th August 2006 We were a bit slack getting organised today but eventually we hired some bikes from the hostel and set out towards the centre of Beijing. Cycling in Beijing is a risky business, although there are cycle lanes which run along side every road, the traffic makes it very daunting to say the least. As for junctions, who knows who has right of way, every man for himself. First stop was the famous Tiananmen Square, the square more widely know for the demonstrations in 1989 that were eventually broken up by the Chinese government sending in the army with tanks. From there we locked up our bikes and entered the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City was off limits for 500 years and by the number of tourists there you’d think it was closing tomorrow. ... read more

We last left you guys with us bustling our way through busy Beijing. So far Beijing had been very exciting; we had eaten far too much food, shopped like maniacs (cheap clothes!!), and spent far too much time trying to figure out the public transport system... so it was time to get on to the real things we were there to see! The Forbidden City was one of the first stops. It's situated smack bang in the geographical centre of Beijing, which also means it's smack bang in the middle of the traffic and smog!! Thankfully on the day we went out to see it, we had beautiful weather; blue skies and all!! Little were we to know this was going to be our ONLY blue sky day. Anyway; let me set the scene for you ... read more

The Forbidden City lies at the center of the ancient city of Beijing. It was home to 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, the Forbidden City is a public museum and World Heritage site, attracting millions of tourists from around the world. Through chance we left the Forbidden City as our last site to see in China, on our last full day. What a mistake! It was hot, and the place is HUUUGGGEE. Granted, there are plenty of seating areas around, and many of those in shaded areas, it is just that my bad knee could not keep up with all there is to see in this place. Another bad thing with this visit is that there were many closed off places due to renovations in preparation for the Olympics. One regret ... read more

After being woken up by the roaring and shouting of Linda at all hours of the morning....Laura and I got up and went down to the Forbidden City. Had some nice greasy food with unidentifable meat outside and then went on in. Lying at the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City, called Gu Gong, in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square and it is the world's largest palace complex. The Forbidden City is divided into two parts. The southern section, or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Construction of the palace complex began in ... read more
