Een verfrissende tocht ... read more

As soon as I landed in Siem Reap I was reminded of the Dead Kennedy’s song from the 80’s. The song that pretty much said Cambodia was the last place on Earth you would come for holiday…and now, just 20 years later, the road to Siem Reap is lined with gigantic resort-style hotels for the wealthy tourists (mostly from Korea) who flock here all year round. It has been a dream of mine for quite some time to come to Cambodia to learn more about the atrocities that went on here not so long ago, but even more than that, to visit the temples of Angkor. It has lived up to my expectations. I left Saigon a few days ago, which is not a place I needed to spend too much time in. It was actually ... read more

I have severe Blog Lag as one of my fellow bloggers put it...this is my Blog from when I was in Cambodia in October... I travelled from Saigon through to Phnom Penh (Cambodia capital) on a local bus along with eight other travelling companions, people that I had met in Vietnam. Cambodia is a place where most people probably feel more comfortable travelling with a companion, however if you find yourself in the position of being a lone traveller it is a very simple country to navigate round. Not dissimilar to the rest of SE Asia where the logistics of travelling a country are easily taken out of your hands. However you do need to be careful about your personal property especially when travelling on public transport in Cambodia. Two girls that I was travelling with ... read more

It is hard to believe we have been on the road for almost three months already. Every day has been an adventure, as we have been moving continuously. To recap, we landed in Singapore on Dec 271h, flew to Bangkok on New Year's Day, then later hit the beaches of southern Thailand. From there, we returned to Bangkok, then worked our way to northern Thailand, where we discovered the fine art of elephant wrestling. We exited Thailand and traveled to Laos by slow boat down the Mekong River, spent one night wrestling rats this time in a little seedy guest house, then arrived in the beautiful world heritage site of Luang Probang. While in Luang Probang, we had the privilege of feeding 70 Buddhist monks every morning - very special. We moved on from there to ... read more

Well, we made it to Siem Reap after a very long boat ride up the Mekong River (7 hours). In was very interesting to see the countryside by boat. The poverty is much greater outside of Phnom Pehn. The river was lined with shanties and the water was filled with fishermen and women in their longboats. Children were so excited to see the boat go by. They would run to the waters edge to wave at us with lots of excitement! Our boat did get stuck for about 20 minutes. Not in mud (a bit of a relief) but in a fish net! I was exhausted and sun burned by the time we got to Siem Reap. We are staying in a very cute little guest house near the market and bars! For the past two ... read more

The last few days have been a mishmash of adventure and the waiting game. Starting early some days ago (I think I've lost track) we left Laos (sob sob) and crossed the Friendship Bridge back into Thailand. Everything was much easier than imagined and fittingly we drove past the Lao Beer Brewery on the way. Before you could try and say Nakhon Rachasima (Korat) we were on a hot horrible bus from hell and had arrived in Thailand's second largest city. With a monument in the city centre that constantly has worshippers paying respect day and night, Korat really is a true living Thai city. It ahd a supermarket :) And we also had REAL pad thai that was absolutely delicious :) Another early start, several hours arguing with bank tellers and a number of actual ... read more

just finished another house near the tonle sap lake in a small isolated village. We were outside all day in 41 degrees centigrade trying to escape the heat as much as possible by taking 15 min breaks every half hour although there was little shade and no trees for miles around but only rice paddies and buffalo wallows. We slowed to a snails pace by tuesday and weaving the palm walls took 6 times as long as it did the week before. By the 3rd day 5 of us (including me) were ill in bed with the flu and heat exhaustion but back on form by Thursday when we finished the house and a storm cleared and cooled the air. Others fell sick shortly after with local ailments caught from the local children. Today has ... read more
