Part 14 February 13 Siem Reap, Cambodia Surely there is a Cambodia beyond Siem Reap, a town that seems to have been rapidly transformed by the sudden "in-ness" of Cambodia and particularly Angkor Wat. From stepping off the plane to the sharp old airport aside the under construction new one, you can tell this is a big step above Laos or India in terms of tourist orientation. Driving into town (with a taxi driver speaking fine English), we passed dozens of spanking new, remarkably similar looking, giant hotels (all named Angkor this or that). And past all this, in the former backpacker part of town, we found "Bar Street," lined with balconiued restaurants that wouldn't look out of place in Seattle or San Francisco (except for their pricing--a bargain by US standards at $3-5 per meal, ... read more

I miss Siem Reap. Most of all, I miss the people I met during my short stay there. The temples of Angkor were amazing, but truly, the people are what made my trip memorable. It's Monday, February 13 (at least it is in Malaysia at the time of my writing!) and I'm in Ipoh, Malaysia. I left Siem Reap, Cambodia yesterday and after one night in K.L., Malaysia, I took a bus to Ipoh, a city on my way to Thailand. This blog entry, however, is primarily about my final days in Siem Reap... After spending a full day exploring the temples with my tour guide Nak on Thursday and a quick sunrise visit to Angkor Wat on Friday (see previous blog entry), I spent the rest of the day in Siem Reap. The city itself ... read more

Cannot believe how fast the weeks are flying now. Back in Siem Reap now after a 6hr public bus journey from Phnom Penh. The worst journey so far due to the drivers constant beeping of the out of tune horn at absolutely everything in sight even if it was 2 miles away on a straight stretch of dirt track.....extremely frustrating and meant trying to 'zone out' the sound to get some sleep. We arrived in Siem Reap sometime in the afternoon and unpacked our big backpacks which we left here for the 2 weeks we were travelling about...was really nice to have clean clothes again since everything seems to have turned to an off sort of orange colour. We went to a Bettocello concert on the recommendation of someone which turned out to be absolutely ... read more

Sorry for the delay in posting guys, Cambodia is a bit primitive when it comes to computers, well basically primitive in just about everything. Everything here is amazing, you see something that grabs your eye, like a big gold emblazoned temple, only to be juxtapositioned next to nearly collapsing wicker huts. We spent three days in Phnom Penh, went shopping, hired a driver for a day for only $10 and got in all the sights. Ate at nice restaurants, ate lunch in the market for 20c, bought shoes for $15, and ate corn in this crazy café that had hammocks instead of seats, very cool. Had four corn cobs and three drinks for $1. We saw the national museum and couldn't see the Royal Palace because we weren’t wearing long pants. Then poor Jen got sick ... read more

GETTING HERE Well, Jim and I are in Cambodia at the moment. A lot of people regaled us with their horror stories about travel from the Thai border to Siem Reap, such as 17hour bus journeys from hell, scams where the 'VIP Aircon bus' is neither VIP nor Aircon, rickety buses that 'break down' then take you to some dodgy place late at night and intimidate you into staying etc. I started thinking perhaps this was a necessary 'right of passage', then I thought "Am I CRAZY?" Jim diligently researched transport options on the net and we opted for what seemed the best way to go: a cab all the way from the border to Siem Reap - some 160 odd km. Crossing the actual border was pretty easy once we'd shook off the touts wanting ... read more

Yet another shitty bus ride - I'm well getting sick of these you know! Definitely gonna have to purchase one of those travel pillows so I can at least get some kip I reckon. Ah well, I'm here safe and well now so fuck it. After an exhausting tuk tuk mission to find a spot in one of the guesthouses listed in LP we ended up staying at Angkor Sina Bright guesthouse where the driver worked (I know before you say owt), but it was really nice place and rooms were only $7 a night so we were happy. Spent a good couple of hours playing shithead with Roya and Matt then decided to go check The Red Piano out for tea in the centre of town. This was the place the Tomb Raider film crew ... read more

We had heard the horror stories of the bus to Cambodia. Armed raids to rob you of your belongings, a 17 hour trek across the worst tracks ever, corrupt officials at the border, bus scams leaving you stranded at horrible guesthouses until you paid more money....Well at least some of the above are not true or at least did not happen to us! We started thinking perhaps this was a necessary 'right of passage', then we thought "Are we CRAZY?" The journey started off pretty badly to begin with. Leaving Ko Phi Phi was hard enough as it was. You must all read this thinking "poor buggers, look how hard their lives are"....BUT the truth is that it is the longest we have stayed in one place and we have no other home so as soon ... read more

I left K.L., Malaysia behind this morning on an Air Asia flight bound for Siem Reap, Cambodia. As far as I was concerned, it couldn't happen soon enough... I tried to use my debit card in K.L. again this morning, and as usual, it was rejected. Thanks Bank of America. At this point, my cash level was seriously low. I knew I needed to pay about $15-$20 for my taxi to the airport which turned out to be 45 minutes away. I paid this by working a deal with the taxi driver where the fare was split between the remainder of my ringgits (Malaysian currency) and U.S. dollars. That left me with about $13 in U.S. dollars, $1.50 in Singapore dollars, and my trump card (Thailand currency worth about $30). I was pretty sure there was ... read more

Well after passing my IE it was time for another small trip and I had to do a visa run as well. I had some company on this jolly little adventure in the form of Chicago and Gaz from the dive shop. So we decided to head to Siem Reap and then we will be off to Phonm Pehn. Leaving Pattaya by car we headed up to Aranya Prathet which is the border town in Thailand to cross into Cambodia and the border town of Poipet and from there it was on to Siem Reap. Entering the border area was easy and straightforward alot more than many people or books would have you think. There are guys on the Thai border side that will sort out your Cambodian visa for you so you do not have ... read more

Alright, we made the border cross..after a week of planning and hearing horror stories about 15hr bus rides from hell, breakdowns, scams ect ect, we did it in a cool 4hrs. Border Crossing: Woke up early, got a tuk-tuk (threewheeler thing) to the border...got hassled by a bunch of people trying to "help" us with our visa's...stiff armed past them and made my break to the immigration office...blew past a bunch of Thai's waiting in the "thai" line...got our visa stamp and were off to Siem Reap in an air conditioned Toyota Camery..most people take a bus for 8$US...I recruited a couple of girls (whom I thought were dudes at first,) to split the cab with us 4 ways (10$ each) and we were off..intersesting girls, I think they may have ben thespians....
