The distance between Siem Reap in Cambodia and the Thailand border is 150 km, give or take. On a standard freeway, this should take about 1.5 hours, allowing for some traffic. On a standard highway, going 80 km/hour, this should take no more than 2 hours. This particular journey takes 7 - 8 hours - on a good day. I happened to catch the bus on a not-so-good day. Although the concept of time and corresponding schedules and timetables appear to be a flexible matter in south-east Asia, the “air-conditioned minivan” - which turned out to be a small bus from the hipp 70’s or possibly the glorious 80’s - departed more or less on time. The first part of the trip was relatively smooth, with something that could resemble a paved road. No lanes or ... read more

We set off at 5am in 2 minibuses, one with a Man Utd. sticker on the windscreen, which caused Adrian to rapidly shift to the other bus. Jenny and Babsi were left behind to catch their plane later on (had they been let in on what was about to happen??). Crossing the border itself was straightforward and Bol heartily welcomed us to Cambodia as we past through the official archway. The next stage was a 5 hour trip in 3 taxis to Siem Reap- to go about 80km (I think). Why so long? Well, basically because the first few hours are spent on one of the most uneven "roads" classified as a road. The drivers apparently do this 6 hour trip up to 4 times a day, so with a schedule like that, feel it necessary ... read more

Well, we have made it to cambodia. The lodge we are staying at is pure paradise, but the experience has been somewhat tough on me. The Leipers are more used to travelling in Asia, but it is fair to say that I am majorly overwhelmed. It is hard for me to be trekking through these holy sites and walking amongst small children and mine victims begging. My inclination is of course to give them all of my money, because really, I can find more of it. Others treat the locals like dirt and you hear that same old why dont they get a job rhetoric as in the states. But here, the tourists own everything, and that is enough to make me more than a bit overwhelmed. I dont claim to have the answer to this ... read more

Guess where we are? In the bangkok airways ultra-hip Airport lounge. We thought we would take in the ambiance to make up for the fact that we fell asleep at 7pm last night and didnt see much of the bangkok nightlife. Good thing that when we woke at 3 am, it was still going on. So at least we can enjoy good coffee (all espresso, all the time, dad) and free sandwiches and internet. Although i am sure this place is reserved for more elite passengers, anybody who is this awake at 6:30 in the morning deserves a little pampering. Rae and Bruce are off to find some photos for visa entry to Cambodia, and Hal and I are chilling, watching a tropical sunrise and pretending its the sunset. if you see a picture, its cause ... read more

I open my eyes. The hot Singapore sun beats down upon my face. I realise that we should have been up already. With just over an hour before our plane leaves and realising I'm still in bed, I smack Rohan on the foot and say GET UP WE'RE LATE!!!" We leave the room in 30 seconds flat and head strait for Changi Airport. We make it with minutes to spare. Great start to the day. An hour and a half later we arrive in Siem Reap. Being guided by the man that sits next to me on the plane, who seems very dissapointed to be here... AGAIN, we rush to get to the head of the line for customs. We cruise thru, get our visas and pick up our bag... We are in Cambodia. A short ... read more

After a great stay on the Island, we took a boat and mini bus down to the cambodian border. Our Visa's were never completed because the camodian embassy in vientien was closed for 5 days. A local tour guide told us that we may have to bribe the cambodian officials at the border, and they may grant us a visa. This seemed like quite a sketchy idea, but we had no choice. Jay went to cambodia about a month ago to do a "visa run", where you leave Thailand, and then come back minutes later to receive another 30 day visa. Jay thought it was going to be a quick couple minutes in Cambodia, not realizing how corrupt the place is. As he entered, some random guy tried to lead him away to see his passport ... read more

Cambodia is a country with an interesting and diverse, if often disturbing, history: In 1975, the Communist 'Khmer Rouge' launched an offensive that eventually destroyed the Khmer Republic that had previously governed the country. The Khmer Rouge soon turned Cambodia into a land of horror. Immediately after its victory, the new regime ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns, sending the entire urban population out into the countryside to till the land. Thousands starved or died of disease during the evacuation. Many of those forced to evacuate the cities were resettled in new villages, which lacked food, agricultural implements, and medical care. Many starved before the first harvest, and hunger and malnutrition - bordering on starvation - were constant during those years. Those who resisted or who questioned orders were immediately executed, as were most ... read more

I am here! I have survived the famous 13 hour bumpy bus ride from the depths of Hades from Bangkok to Siem Reap. Complete with a collapsed bridge and passengers with diarrhea (not me, thankfully). I am staying in a lovely guest house a bit out of town. But I couldn't resist the $3 a night price for friendly service, a soft double bed and my own bathroom. What luxury. I have also had the wonderful fortune of being adopted by three of the funniest, good-sprited Irish girls who are staying at the same guest house. We are sharing lots of laughs and stories. Good company! And I hopefully will be able to meet them later in Phnom Penh for more adventures. Siem Reap is a wonderful little town with lots of character and friendly people. ... read more

So we won't bore you with another one of our tragic bus nightmares, but what we are going to say about the entire bus ride from the Thai border to Siem Reap is: - all girls require a sports bra for this ride!! We spent our first night at The 13th Villa where we met William "Bill" Simonsen, a retired Canadian/American expat who soon became a good friend of ours. He was now living permanently in Cambodia and was working towards building a new school for disabled orphans. The DOVE (Disabled Orphans Vocational Education) centre which Bill part funds, is currently located near the Angkor temples where we were invited by the Head teacher for a chicken dinner and viewing of students work. The new school is planned to be complete within the next year. The ... read more

About 45 minutes ago, circa 9:00 pm (there is a 12 hour time difference between Thailand and Cambodia) we arrived at Siem Reap, Cambodia...our travels took a mere 14 hours rather than 12. The bus ride was indeed quite bumpy, but I loved seeing the villages we passed through and the countryside. Frequently our van was met with the waves of small children with bright smiles. Now that we are in Siem Reap it is evident that there is a drastic contrast between life in the small villages and the city of Siem Reap. Cambodia has only truly been safe for traveling in the past 10 years, with one of the major draws being the Angkor Wat...which I am EXTREMELY excited to see! After studying Southeast Asian Art and Architecture while I was studying to become ... read more
