Well it's my last day in Cambodia, and I must say I am really going to miss the place! It's crazy, but the people are so friendly and the country is amazing! The weather here today is well hot, but it's probably been my best day so far! Visited the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, it’s amazing what they keep on the lake. I saw pigs kept in cages, a floating school with its own floating basketball court! They even cater for the western tourists by providing urinals! The smell on the lake is a bit funky, this is due to the number of people living on it combined with the fact that they cure all the fish here. So if you can imagine rotten fish combined with raw sewage, you’re pretty close to how ... read more

Hello everyone, no journal yesterday as I thought I would not spend an evening in front of the PC. Well I am now in Siam Reap, and the hotel is well impressive Goldiana The first day I was here I just had a bit of a mooch around town and a sit by the pool, very relaxing! However today has been a totally different story. Was up very early to head over to Angkor Wat to see the temples, and let me tell the Cambodians have far too many temples!!! Amazing experience though, especially the temple Ta Prohm which is where Tombraider was filmed! Anyway, after all the temples I went to an amazing bar/restaurant called the blue pumpkin! Really nice, nothing like anything else I’ve experienced in Cambodia. The décor is very Philippe Starck and ... read more

After escorting Steve back to Bangkok, I wanted to get out of town as fast as possible. The next morning I was on a bus bound for Cambodia. It was filled with a god crew of backpackers. The ride to the border was an easy 3 hours filled with travel stories and suggestions. The border crossing was long and tedious. I already had a Cambodian visa, but I still had to wait in a long line of people who had to apply for one of their own. Oh well, live and learn. Fortunately, a girl named Shawna who was seated next to me on the bus had heard about the dramatic change in road conditions once in Cambodia. Was she ever right! Shawna and I managed to rally two more passengers (Katrina and Erica) and we ... read more

I wanted to see Angkor Wat for a long time. After a little bit of convincing Michelle, Darren, and Christoff agreed to come to Angkor Wat with me. I have been to Brazil and I have been to Mexico, but nothing prepared me for what I was about to see in Cambodia. Our flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap was early and short. After a long line for a visa at Siem Reap airport, we were picked up by our hotel. Roads were barely paved and fields looked like something out of Vietnam war movies. Michelle and I decided to relax at hotel and boys decided to check out the town. Normally I am very much prepared before I go on a trip, but somehow I didn't do any research on Cambodia... school final and work ... read more

Hello and welcome to the year 2644 (cool futuristic music playing in the background)..... Yes, in Laos where we rang in the new year it is in fact the year 2644, as they adhere to the Buddhist Era (BE) calendar date which began earlier than the Roman/Christian calendar we use. Funny, it feels a lot like 2006 to us. We hope everyone back home partied like it was 2599! When last we wrote we were in Luang Prabang, and since then we have been on the move, stopping only briefly in the Laos capital of Vientiane before making our way south into Cambodia. The bus trip from Luang Prabang to Vientiane was typically Lao --- that is, not a straight stretch of road to be seen for hundreds of kilometers through mountainous terrain. We did get ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Our last day in Saigon consisted of more royalty treatment from Peter and his friends. They took us on a 3 hour (one way) motorcycle journey from Saigon to a little vacation spot on the coast of Vietnam. The motorbikes were fun at first, but after about 30 minutes your butt starts to go numb! Halfway there we pulled over and took a break at one of the many restaurants along the road full of nothing but hammocks where we were able to let the blood flow freely between our heads and our feet! Riding on the back of a bike is exhilarating! I don’t believe we ever went faster than 70 or 80 km/h but when you can’t see where you’re going, when you have the wind hitting you with phenomenal force, ... read more

Grabed the afternoon bus from Phnom Penh up to Siem Reap (I decided to pass on the boat trip which I heard was long and costly). For some reason there were a lot of mozzy's on the bus so I spent the 6 hours killing them as they flew by my window. I arrived at Siem Reap as the sunwas setting and I grabbed a scooter ride to the Happy Guest house as recommended by Beatrice (from Sihanoukville). I did not know at the time there were two Happy Guest houses but oh well. After dropping of my stuff, I headed to town for some food. The city center was very busy and much more upscale then I had imagined with a few streets closed-off to cars. These streets housed lots of bars and restaurants with ... read more

Well I was packed and ready to leave on the Battambang leg of the journey at 5:45 am. The boat company sends a minibus or similar to collect customers at 6. However, my bus driver 'forgot' me ... so at 6:30 I started agitating for something to happen and in a last ditch effort I was raced out to the area where the boat departs ... in a tuk tuk that literally bounced from rut to rut tossing me, my backpack and the carriage about so much that I thought we might all be separated at some stage ... and we were hurtling along a narrow strip of land with water on both sides as well as huts and people having breakfast, children walking to school (start at 7am) - not exactly a place to speed ... read more

13 - 16.12.2005 Sihanoukville Z Phnom Phenu sme sli expresnym busom po vcelku fajnovej ceste do jedineho morskeho pristavu v celej krajine - mesta Sihanoukville. Ubytko sme mali perfektne vo vlastnom romantickom bambusovom bungalove s vyhladom na more. Bungalovy vlastnil jeden mlady britsky par.. Vseobecne sme stretavali dost europanov, ktori sem zja... read more

So, as of tomorrow we will travel back to Bangkok and our little loop of SE Asia will be finished. Various emails have been sent out but here's a little summary of what we've been up to for those that weren't paying attention, mostly in chronological order and with place names conveniently highlighted for ease of viewing. Don't say we aren't constantly thinking of your needs. Thailand * In Chiang Mai Rachael F and Jen went to Elephant School for 3 days where they learned to control (barely) and care for elephants - they even have the Mahout suit to validate their qualification * Rachael B went to Cookery class and can now whip up a variety of authentic Thai cuisine - she will be our chef for the foreseeable future when we get back * ... read more
