Well, we took the most adventerous leg of our journey yesterday from Surin (Thailand) across the border to Cambodia. 1st mode of transport was the minivan from Surin to the bordervillage in Cambodia called O'Smach (about 2 hours of nice Thai roads). We were the only Farang (tourists) with a cram packed van (as they always do in SE Asia). I had to sit in the middle seat in the front with my pack smothering me and two big Thai guys either side of me....at least there was air con! It wasn't until we hit the border that we realised we had taken the crossing less travelled. Other than a massive casino that resembled an Oasis in the dessert (the richer Thai's must have to cross the border to gamble), there was nothing except one guy ... read more

Generally the food is good in Cambodia. There are some cuisines that you must try. They are such as amok in coconut, lok lat fried beef, amok grilled in banana leaf, chicken in palm sugar, sour soup, green curry with vegetable …etc. Most of the curry cuisines are not spicy. The best reasonable price of this food is at local restaurant of Old Market area. We spent 3 nights at Pub street’s bar. The drink is cheap compare with Malaysia, USD 2.50 per beer or cocktail and buys 2 free 1. The fresh fruit shake is good also cost 2000 Riel (around RM1.80) ... read more

Chenelle and I vegged out for a day and did nothing at all, except drink beer and use the internet. Siem Reap is a full-fledged tourist town near the Temples of Angkor. Away from the cheap tourist town is the Rodeo Drive of hotels. Apparently, there is a huge influx of Asian tourists to the region, so there are lots of people getting in on the market (blah!). I'm staying at a nice hotel with Chenelle b/c my dad knows a hotel owner in Cambodia. I'm delighted. Chenelle and I agreed to wake up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise at Angkor, but despite our efforts, we got there at 6 a.m. and we managed to beat the thousands of tourists, but not the hundreds who apparently had the same plan as us. ... read more

We have been in Cambodia for over 2 weeks now and really love it. We are staying here for a few days longer before travelling down the Mekong river into Vietnam. Hope you like the piccies and our apologies for not blogging sooner, but when the beer is only 26 pence a glass, you can understand why it's fallen behind a bit!!! Needless to say, we are both fine (apart from a few bad hangovers!) and are really trying hard not to think about how long we have left... Hope this words and pictures find you all well, Pip pippety pippeth, G&R x... read more

Hello there, Cambodia & Vietnam have been very beautiful countries with truly wonderful people. They make do with the few resources that they have, and are very ingenious with how they utilise the many bits and pieces. Teachers earn only $25 / month ( 1% of the Irish rate), which will give you an idea of the scale of the economy over here. While travelling through the countryside, it was like travelling on a time machine through Europe as depicted in 16th century oil paintings, with wooden carts, hay stacks and basic timber housing. The Temples / Walled Cities at Ankor Wat are truly remarkable. During the Khmer Empire 1000 - 1300 AD these cities were far more advanced than their contemporary Western counterparts. Now days the ruins are in battle with the invading jungle, and ... read more

Hi everyone! I have to be brief because I only have a few minutes to write this and it took forever to get the pictures on this computer... I'm not usually into museums and sight-seeing, but this place blew me away. Briefly... got up early yesterday and made our way by bicycle to Angkor Wat. Well, "early" is relative because there are a bunch of real gunners here who made it up in time to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat - apparently that's the thing to do. I haven't seen the sun rise in a really long time, so I figured I would have nothing to compare it to and wouldn't miss much by sleeping in. Anyway, Angkor was nice to see but of course my expectations were so high I don't think they could ... read more

Couldn't resist... what a good song! classic. Anyways... the bus ride (dun dun dun)... the one evvveryone has horror-stories about - actually wasn't as bad as we thought. After we crossed the border to Cambodia, we switched to a small bus. The road was unpaved, bumpy, and full of potholes... you couldn't read a book, or fall asleep, and it was so loud that iPods could barely tune out the motor-sounds... but it was fun! A great ride... totally okay. Our driver told us how the government has promised to fix this road since the nineties. Hasn't happened yet! But it was a GORGEOUS ride... red (not orange!) dirt roads, fields going on for miles, little stilt houses and villages at the side of the road... great lighting at the time. And we drove by so ... read more
