Breakfast at the hotel. We called Nam, the tuk-tuk driver who drove us to our hotel the night before. He had said if we needed a driver while we were in Siem Reap to call him. Before we could enter any of the temple complexes, we had to buy passes. US$40 (each) for a three-day pass (at least they put your photo on it and laminate it)! We visited the Angkor Thom complex first, including Bayon, Baphuon, the Terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King, and Phimeanakas. Then we saw Ta Keo and Ta Phrom. Nam took us to No. 4 restaurant at Ta Phrom, which his family runs. All the stalls looked the same, so you just end up eating wherever your driver takes you, which is probably owned by his family or friends…After ... read more

Took a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Old bus, no A/C, had to keep the windows open the whole way....it took us six hours to go about 150 km (93miles) from the border to Siem Reap. See photo of the bus. You can also see one the lovely rest areas we stopped at. If you're thirsty, hungry, or need to relieve yourself, this is the place. Mostly everyone just peed and then sat around smoking cigarettes while the drivers ate their meals at a nice leisurely pace...The bus dropped everyone off at a hotel and we got a tuk-tuk to the Bopha Hotel. After so many hours on the bus we.were covered in orange dust and our hair and clothes were crunchy! We were too tired to explore and find food so we ate ... read more

Cambodia as a country has had a very troubled recent past. The Khmer Rouge wanted to reform Cambodia and create basically a brainwashed society that is devoted to it’s ultra-communist beliefs. They dubbed the dawn of this new age as year zero. In order to wipe out any evidence of a pre-Ankar Cambodia they set about destroying anything with any religious or historical value, and slaughtering anyone who had the knowledge to pose a threat to the regime. Doctors, lawyers, military, monks, they even went to the extreme of targeting people who wore glasses! They did not just stop there; they also killed all of these people’s families, regardless of age and gender. In total they massacred around 2 million people - over a quarter of the country’s population. The country descended into civil war which ... read more

Well hello there all you lovely people, how’s things? Sorry it's been so long since I have written but the internet in Cambodia is absolute shite, very slow and pretty expensive so not a great combination when you're on a budget. I say that but it doesn't stop me from going out and pissing horrendous amounts of money up the wall drinking copious amounts of whiskey! The morning of the 15th June at 8.30am was the time we had to saddle up and catch our bus out of Bangkok all the way across the Cambodian border to Siem Reap. At 10.15am the bus finally arrived. We let them off on this occasion as we boarded a luxury air conditioned VIP coach with reclining lazy boy seats, plenty of legroom and a film. At this point I’m ... read more

Hi All Spent the last 3 days in Siem Reap which i have really enjoyed. The temples of Angkor have been the highlight. Also chilled out by a pool, visited the landmine museum and orphanage. Siem Reap is geared up for tourists so lots of westernised things here - a bar street wih great cocktails and the best ever sorbet at Blue Pumpkin bakery/restaurant. The traditional Khmer and Cambodian curries are excellent. On our first night ate at the Khmer Kitchen which apparently had Mick Jagger eating there not so long ago. I have a very funny photo of Laura & Louise doing MJ impressions! the Dead Fish Tower restaurant (bad name - great food) has real crocodiles which is a bit of a fright when you walk to the toilet and one snaps at you! ... read more

What a surprise to find ourselves in Thailand. We had all focused on preparing for China and really knew very little about this Kingdom. Yes, the locals refer to it as their Kingdom with their beloved king. Our local guide was very accommodating and showed us the city highlights in our brief stay. He took us to the Royal Palace and the Holy Temple, with the Jade Buddha. The temple and palace were stunning. Glittering gold, bright colors, well-preserved icons and buildings. We took a ride through the canals on a Sampan and then fought the traffic. The town was all spiffed up for the 60th anniversary of their beloved King. All sorts of royal dignataries were arriving so traffic was horrendous. We wanted to go see the city lit for the celebrations but there was ... read more

I think im crap at adjusting to the heat and the long days in the sun, so I spent most of today asleep and feeling crap. About 5 litres of water and i'm back up to 99%, but not the 100% that I require to go and eat locusts and cockroaches!... read more

We arived at Siem Reap Airport only discover that we had misplaced our passport pics for our Cambodian Visas! Thankfully we it was only a $2 USD penalty for each of us. Of course that would be perfect if we had any USD... After calculating the penalty at nearly 3 times the going rate in neighbouring Vietnamese currency, we realized that we were indeed in for a new experience. After this warm welcome we decided to get Cambodian Riels or USD as soon as possible to avoid further exchange rate "technical difficulties" for the $20 USD Visa fees each. We were pointed to a nearby ATM by the grinning Customs officer. Strangely this particular ATM didn't recognize any of my bank cards or credit cards. We were then directed to an exchange bureau just outside but, ... read more

Temples. Temples. Temples IT gets a little tiring looking round so many temples. During the day most are washed out by the harsh light. For those coming to see Ankor I would recommend a 3 day pass ($40) and a motorbike driver ($7/day). Go to the temples early in the morning and late in the day, and do something else during the middle. They are much more atmospheric at these times. The Landmine Museum In the afternoon I went to see the Landmine museum. IT was located out of town down a very unmade road, and if you didn't know it was there you would never find it. It was a strange place, no real structure to it, just a collection of ordnance, newspaper clippings and various other articles. The museum is the brainchild of Cambodian ... read more

Into Cambodia The bus that took us across the border was an hour late leaving, had dubious airconditioning (they just circulated hot air) and was certainly a far cry from the 'luxury' that I had been told I would receive. On the plus side I found out that the person sitting next to me had paid 6 times as much as me for her tickets, which of course softened the blow. Around the Cambodian we ended up changing busses 3 times (and avoided being scammed into changing money at famously bad rates in spite of the attemtps of the drivers to get us to do so (bloody hell thats a bad sentence)) before finally ending up in our comortable airconditioned bus. Which was pink. At least the interiour was - bright pink and with nice frilly ... read more
