Some pics from the final days. So many thoughts, so much to write! We are sitting in the departure lounge at Mauritius waiting for our flight to Madagascar, with unbelievable internet! We said goodbye to Patti and Doug last night as they head home. I think it is hard for all of us to believe that portion of the trip is over. But it was amazing, finishing with the last 5 days in Kruger National Park. Those pics will be for later. After camping at Hoada, we moved south to another nice campsite, that would be wonderful if they were able to get some rain! The owner is a young South African woman run with the help of her mother and sister in law. We toured the rock paintings, which are now a UNESCO site and ... read more

After leaving Etosha National Park and all the animals we head north west to the Angola border. After so much dry desert, it was amazing to crest over a hill and find almost the Garden of Eden with all of its greenery. The road did require us to use our 4x4 and put our trust in a couple of 8 yr olds. A few signs would have been helpful. Kuene River separates Namibia from Angola and is the first river we have seen since arriving in Namibia. Everywhere we go, people are praying for rain. The last good rains for the rest of the country were in 2011. But in this area we actually receive a light afternoon rain and it feels great!. We spend two very enjoyable and restful days at the Kuene River lodge ... read more

Ok, way behind on our travelblog. We arrived in Windhoek on the 24th and set off for our three week camping experience in Namibia. First stop was Etosha National Park where we spent 4 days, 3 of them camping and one delightful night at Dolomite lodge. Internet has been scarce, we are now at a very nice lodge in central Namibia and will try to download some pics from Etosha. It was amazing to just drive and see so many animals!!... read more

Today is our wedding anniversary! Simon got me a cup of tea in bed. Christo removed our shock absorber to avoid anymore damage. He has fastened the brake pipe up with zippies. Best of all I managed to get some apple pie! Christo has gone off on a long journey to pick up a shock absorber for us and another van. He also has someone waiting for a clutch. We have slowly made our way to the next site, Sesriem, close to the Sousslevi dunes. There we found that 5 of our party had got stuck in the sand inside the camp and had to be pulled out by bulldozer. Mark and Chris had a tyre disintegrate on the way but managed to put the spare on and get the spare tyre put on the spare ... read more

At long last we have wifi again. It seems ages since I last made an entry. We made an exceptionally early start today. The aim was to leave camp around 4:30 to be at Dune 45 to see the sunrise. We finally left just after 5am and raced down tarmac road in the dark, still being fairly careful with no shock absorber. Time was running out so we went right to the end where the dunes are right across the road. We got on the first 4 x 4 to leave and hurtled through the sand as far as it would take us. We missed the sunrise as the huge dunes were higher than the sun. We found out afterwards that because of cloud the usual effect on the dunes from Dune 45 didn't happen. We ... read more

This morning we were woken by the cockerels crowing. There are quite a few animals here. One was a Great Dane who was very friendly and even shook hands with Simon! Roads slightly better today but still concrete and gravel. We came across Tom and Sue who had a puncture. Simon again came to the rescue and used our jack as Tom's wouldn't lift the van high enough. He soon sped off afterwards and left us behind in the dust!Stopped on the way in Helmeringhausen for a lovely coffee and applecake in the hotel's lovely garden. Eventually arrived in Aus. Staying in a lovely camp site set in the hill. We were parked under a tree with a huge social nest of weaver birds. We watched the birds fly in and out to feed their young ... read more

Got up today to another sunny morning but cooler than of late. We first went down the road to try and get a glimpse of the Garub wild dessert horses. We could see a few quite near but they didn't come very close. There were loads more further away. But some ostrich and an oryx came right up to the waterhole in front of us. Went into Aus for diesel. It is a pretty little town on a hill with a petrol station, an hotel, little church and a few shops. The houses were the most we have seen for a long while. The roads were better today. We crossed a railway line several times but didn't see a train. We passed through a dip today which actually had water in it near a dam. Lots ... read more

Left our last camp site in Namibia today. It's partly sad to leave as it's such a wonderful country with vast mountains and unbelievably huge empty spaces but we're all looking forward to proper roads and an end to the dust. We had 304 km to do today. Climbed up out of the ravine and turned onto yet another gravelly road that shakes every bit of you and you cannot believe that a motorhome can still hold together (just in our case and many others)! Finally arrived on B1 to Noordoever at the border. Lovely smooth tarmac but we had to drive carefully as our tyres were still deflated for the gravel roads. There were no instructions what to do at the border. We were directed in the motorhome to all sorts of places. In the ... read more

Still travelling on dusty, sandy, corrugated roads but only 2 more nights and we will be back in South Africa and blessed tarmac. There have been some beautiful sunrises and sunsets on the way and some magnificent scenery but we think we are 'deserted out' now. Sand, sand and more sand ... but a variety of colours. Yesterday was a particularly bad road although it was only about 140 kms most of which I drove. When we arrived at the Betta campsite I was having difficulty understanding exactly where Mark wanted me to park the van. The side door ended up being on the wrong side so I said the van needed turning around. Mark said "Well if you're so clever you reverse it in!". So I did and he hasn't mentioned it since! We are ... read more

Today we left in good time, fuelled up with diesel, and then set off following the B2 back to Walvis Bay. It didn't feel right as we expected to see the sea but carried on as there had been a diversion. Eventually we realised we were indeed on the B2 but going the wrong way! Eventually got back and made our way to Dune 7 where there was supposed to be lots of sand boarders and quad bikes riding the dunes. Nothing moved so we had coffee with Mark and Chris and then finally joined the main road. It was the usual unpaved gravel so we bumped across the desert with dust and sand blowing everywhere. There was nothing much to see apart from sand, shrubby bits and hills in the distance. Soon the scenery changed ... read more
