Swakopmund to Sesriem At the start of our 284 kms journey we hit a detour and the Garmin took us in totally the wrong direction. Simon and Claire were behind us and we all agreed that the direction felt wrong. Finally managed to find where we were on the map only to find that we had driven 56 kms at right angles to where we wanted to go. Drove back again and then totally ignored the Garmin as it was trying to take us 800 kms out of our way. We were heading for Solitaire which it did not recognise. 284 kms turned into 396 kms. Satnavs!?* On our way to Sesriem today we stayed behind Charmaine and John whose gearbox was still playing up and we didn't want then to break down in the middle ... read more

Today was completely free. Chris, Charmaine and I went shopping for souvenirs while the men folk went to the museum. Successful trip followed by iced coffee and lemon cheesecake in a lovely coffee shop. In the afternoon we went to a nearby lake off the beach to see the flamingoes. On the way back along the beach we found a young seal who posed for photos so long we worried that he had problems. Eventually he slipped back into the sea and we made our way back to our site. Later we had a meal out at a nearby restaurant and then had an early night before the journey starts again tomorrow.... read more

At present it is actually cold here at Swakopmund which is on the Atlantic coast by the sea and we had a BBQ tonight but were wearing trousers and fleeces. We had a really good laugh. We will be moving inland again in a couple of days so I suppose the temperature will go up again. We had a tailback of about 8 motorhomes yesterday as two had punctures and when they went to put on the spares they were punctured too. We were stopping all the vans and trying to find one with the right wheel size for them. Went on a bit further and then John and Charmaine's van's gearbox packed up. It is an automatic like ours and Christo the mechanic fixed it with the computer and then it packed up again and ... read more

Had last blog saved but can't work out how to add to it before publishing, such an amateur! But last night 2 zebra came on site at our meeting. I think it was the grass that attracted them. Had a lovely meal at the camp restaurant and watched the staff playing music and then singing happy birthday to one of the customers. Lovely atmosphere and ending to a good day. Today we drove to Outjo for topping up with diesel and once again changing the tyre pressures. The heat and road conditions means constant changes. We stocked up at the supermarket being caught by those wanting to sell us things or look after the van for afee of course! We then went to a super bakery and bought rusks very good dunked in coffee and pasties ... read more

Today was very interesting and an adventure. We were last to leave as we hadn't fully taken in the ordeal of the day. We had 124 km to next camp but in order to see other things we had to travel on the dreaded D roads. We started off on tarmac but soon hit what sat nav calls unpaved gravel. 4x4 travel over all the ruts and bumps at speed but in a motorhome you have to go more gently. Still at least it was a bit cloudy after the few drops of rain the night before and cooler. Weshook and rattled in clouds of dust to the Petrified Forest and with a guide saw millions of years old preserved pine trees in the dessert landscape. Next wss Twyfelfontein Rock Carvings. Another 2 hours on bone ... read more

In the morning we had our first look round the camp site. It was small but friendly with a small viewing area to see birds, lots of yellow weaver birds. The ablutions were interesting with curtains instead of doors and only an open perspex roof. We found one of our party had a leaky roof, rain had poured in over their bedding and they had had a rotten night. At least we hadn't had that. We were soon on the road 194km to Swakopmund on west coast, through the desert on unpaved gravel. We prepared ourselves and set out with dust flying everywhere. We were passed on the way by a couple indicating something wrong so stopped butcouldn't see anything amiss. They eventually stopped and said I had indicator going! What a relief that was easily ... read more

Woke up to a chilly, misty morning. We all met at 8am to be picked up and driven to Walvis Bay, south of Swakopmund, for a catamaran cruise. It was so chilly we were dressed in long trousers, jumpers, fleeces and any extra coats we had. One girl even had gloves and we were very envious! We arrived at the harbour passing high sand dunes on the way and a new housing solution for locals who could live in a small houses with low rent and start to establish themselves. We got on the catamaran and as were leaving the dock a seal suddenly appeared on the boat next to us. We watched him being fed and carried on. Soon pelicans were everywhere and landing on the boat and then a seal on and off. They ... read more

Well we are now at Uis and have travelled about 200 kms over sand and gravel roads which are like corrugated iron. We still have a few teeth left but our vision has gone but that might be the drink! There has been a 6 year drought where we have just come from. Yesterday we were in the middle of nowhere when we were flagged down by a lady who said her little boy was very sick and they needed a lift to Khorixas, where we were going. How can you say no? Anyway, we loaded up mum, dad and little boy and gave them a 37km, teeth rattling drive to Khorixas. I gave them a packet of biscuits to eat on the way. It soon became apparent that there was nothing wrong with the boy ... read more

Today was the last day in Etosha. We explored more and soon saw a bat eared fox and a tortoise! Not much more than usual but did see a lot more of the salt pan. There were lots of lovely views looking like a sandy beach with the sea in the distance, sadly it wasn't! In the end we made our way to the exit, hiding our meat to avoid the foot and mouth check. This time we were't even inspected so kept our pork chops and sausages! Others lost theirs. The campsite is just outside the park and for once we are parked on green grass which we haven't seen for awhile! Had the necessary swim and then tried to clear the dust, a useless task as it finds its way in to everything.... read more

Last night at dusk we went to the waterhole hide and watched zebra and wildebeeste drinking. Then we had a joint barbecue. Early this morning I was up at 5:30 to the waterhole but there was little activity. Still we did watch the sunrise. Then we had 415km to drive on a long hot straight road to Etosha Safari Park. On the way we saw everyone dressed in their best ready for curch, some carrying chairs so it was obviously going to be a long sermon! Once in the park saw just one elephant and one giraffe before getting to Namutoni Camp. It is built round an old German fort. We had a swim and then saw giraffe in the distance by the waterhole. By the time I got there with a camera they'd vanished! We ... read more
