We stopped off in the morning to have some photos at the Tropic of Capricorn before arriving into swakopmund- home for the next few days. Dinner that night would be our first experience of eating local meat- me and Jo rather enjoyed our Oryx meatballs. The boys on the tour tucked into zebra, oryx and kudo amongst other things. Oryx is super lean and no fat to it at all- really tasty! A totally different experience to the one eating local meat in peru!!! My birthday celebrations started early that evening with drinks after dinner, that turned into shots, that turned into dancing the night away to Whitney Huston in a Namibian nightclub. Week 2 of our Africa tour got off to a nice relaing start. We spent two days in the Amanpuri Lodge in Swakopmund which meant a break from the tent and access to bug free toilets and hot showers (it's the little things!). One week into our camping trip we have the whole process of putting up / dismantling the tent down to about 10 minutes. Even when doing it at 5am which we feel is quite impressive! Swakopmund is the adrenaline capital and second largest town in Namibia. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and quickly found out that Saturdays are very much like Sundays with everywhere in town closed. So we opted for a stroll on the beach. The day had finally arrived and it was time to set off on our transcontinental trip through Africa - a 40 day overland camping trip with G-Adventures. Led by our two Zimbabwean tour guides (Darlington and Mr Bombastic) and 22 like minded adventurists, we set off in our lando (souped up bus). We travelled northwards from Cape Town in anticipation of what the next 6 weeks would hold for us and whether we could hack sleeping in tents! The hot African sun with the ever changing terrain made for spectacular viewing on our overland journey. Stoney, sandy, rocky and mountainous landscapes were interrupted by massive agricultural production farms of grapes, tea and limes. Duinen, Delta en Donderende Watervallen Met deze woorden begint de beschrijving van de reis die we gaan maken! Dinsdag 25-04-2017 1e Vakantiedag Vandaag is dan eindelijk de vakantie begonnen, maar ja, de vlucht gaat pas vanavond laat, dus eerst nog een hele dag thuis te gaan. Er is nog wel wat te ruimen en de laatste dingen gaan dan de backpacks in. Rond 18.00 uur rijden we naar Katwijk, waar Bert zijn werkauto parkeert en waar we opgepikt worden door een collega, die ons naar Schiphol brengt. Het is de afgelopen dagen chaotisch geweest op de luchthaven i.v.m. allerlei veiligheidszaken én omdat het meivakantie is. So I was fortunate to take a few days off work and enjoy a new country. A stupendous, photogenic wonderful country with open roads, happy people and so much to see. Stayed in great places, saw beautiful animals in their natual environment, both roadside and in the enormous Etosha National Park. Was one of those trips thats leads you to want more.
