Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach June 18th 2006

Fri. 16 Spoonbills and large flock of black and white birds on way to Airlie Beach. Lots of yachts. Stickers very well received. Foreign tourist liked them too. Sailor in Three Peaks Race took small flag to fly during race. Captain and other crew ok. Sat 17. Sold small flag to four yachtsmen. Trekked 7km through national park largely devoid of fauna (that I saw). A few birds and butterflies. From lookout thought I was viewing 3-P Race. Six yachts and a multihull beating to Long Island (sign at lookout). Binoculars not strong enough to make out flag (ha, ha). Saw them cross finish line and luff up to drop sail. Later confirmed at sailing club where I met Jeff and heard a fascinating tale of sail from somewhere to Noosa, 30 knots, in an hour ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns June 17th 2006

It seems like ages ago since i last updated my blog, so i thought it was about time i filled you all in about what we did in Cairns for a couple of weeks (we've now been in New Zealand for over a week, but i'll try and do a blog for that in the next few days). Cairns has without doubt been the best two weeks of the trip so far, we had originally planned on travelling up there, via Fraser Island, The Whitsundays and Airlie Beach, so that we could meet up with Garan for a while, but it all got a bit too complicated, and we were all starting to run out of money, so instead just took a direct flight from Brisbane to Cairns, which in the end turned out really well, ... read more

Mission Beach So we moved on next to mission beach, unfortunately the weather did not improve so Eun Hye was unable to her skydive but we did have a great time here! I have now been white water rafting in rapids up to grade four (the grades only go up to six and six = near certain death!) on the Tully river!!!!!!!!! It was brilliant! Our boat was one of the best at rafting (obviously!) and we were the only boat who didn't flip over (capsize) which was not for want of trying by our "guide" who kept on getting us to move to the wrong side of the boat and paddle back up the rapids and paddle towards rocks! Don't worry mum it was all good clean fun and if he had capsized us it ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Agnes Water June 17th 2006

So, I actually ended up staying a little tiny bit longer than I had expected in Airlie Beach. I left Wednesday at midnight to take the 10 hour greyhound bus to Agnes Water and the Town of 1770. I was lucky enough to make my bus, because as I was leaving the hostel, I was running into loads of friends who were trying to convince me to stay and have a drink with them. When I arrived at the station, I ran into 2 Canadians who I worked with on the banana farm. Funny story: Because me, and 3 others quit without notice on that banana farm, the owner called the hostel and told them that they wouldn't hire more backpackers....I say, lucky for the backpackers. Even though it's funnt, Im a little mad because they ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Atherton Tablelands June 17th 2006

From Kiwi to Ozzy So...............after six weeks of mountains, lakes, volcanoes, lots of 'new best friends' & swilling........it was time for AUSTRALIA!! We flew straight to Cairns from Auckland, this would be our final trip with George & Tom - who we have been travelling with (on/off) since Los Angeles. Cheryl, my second cousin, met us at Cairns Airport at 12am, then we drove over the windey Karanda range into Mareeba (Tablelands), this would be our home for the next three weeks, an' it were proper lush too... Our room decor was mainly Japanese & Chinese Silks and Linens, with many other collectors clothing and artifacts - this definately beats a twelve bed dorm with 'funky' sheets!! Through the kitchen you step out on to a huge Veranda that is built high into the trees, overlooking ... read more

Ok, so it seems like ages ago that i posted my last entry (no, it WAS ages ago!) but i thought i wouldn't have much to tell you while i was at the sanctuary without boring you with animal stories and pics. ( I have plenty of pics to bore you with when i get home though!) Have actually done quite a bit when i haven't been at the sanctuary though (and some cool stuff at the sanctuary). So here's some highlights of my month: - Naomi (fab lady i stayed with in Bellbowrie, head keeper in raptors) took me to the Brisbane Forest Park and Mount Glorious on one of our days off. Saw a platypus at the forest parks (those guys are a lot smaller than i imagined but incredibly cute in a weird ... read more

Hi Two entries together, lucky you lot!! I’ve decided that a week’s entry at a time is the way to go, otherwise there’s just too much information. You can tell I’ve been in Queensland for a while, I’ve already got slower!! The subject title refers to my plan to go to Perth (this should please mum!)/ I;ve been looking at flight prices and basically it would cost me about $1000 ish to go from Brisbane to Perth and then Perth to Cairns by plane, which is really expensive! What I might do is get a return flight to Perth and then get a plane either from Brisbane to Cairns or the other way, and then which ever way I don’t travel by plane, get a bus tour to do the rest of it! I need to ... read more

Here it is finally, the report on my last 3 weeks of travelling in Oz before I got ill. It was a bit difficult to find enough motivation to write this from home but here it is anyway. It's a pretty long one. Enjoy! The East Coast The East Coast is one of the most famous backpackers' routes in the world. It is a long stretch (over 3000 km) from Cairns in the North all the way down to Sydney. At first sight it's much like what I image the Spanish Costa's are like (haven't been there though): sun, young people with a lot of booze and drugs and party all the time. There is happy hours, Mr and Miss Backpackers elections and wet T- shirt competitions, pub crawls, world cup parties... For the more active ... read more
