Ever since I spent a year exploring what Australia and New Zealand had to offer in 06/07, I've been thinking about the next big adventure. Finally (after a few false starts!), it's here... South East Asia, Fiji and the States, here I come :)
I hope you enjoy reading about my experiences along the way including the highs, the lows, the hilarious and the downright hideous (let's be honest, it's the juicy/embarassing/funny bits that people really want to know about!!) I also try to include plenty of pics, facilities permitting.

Enjoy!

We always knew that 10 days was going to be a whistlestop tour but the full reality only hit Kate and I once we were on the road! I flew into Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and met Kate at the airport; you don't realise how much you appreciate seeing a friendly, familiar face until its been a couple of months since you saw one. Silly things like not having to introduce yourself and make boring small talk...oh, and I could catch up on 8 weeks of gossip! There is only one word to describe the roads in HCMC...CRAZY; there are moped drivers everywhere and nobody abides by the traffic lights so you just have to pick your time and walk out into the traffic purposefully but slowly. The first few attempts were a little scary ... read more

We had decided that after a rather hectic 2 weeks in Bangkok and Northern Thailand that we would head south and spend some time chilling out and seeing in Christmas and New Year. We knew that it was a long trip to Koh Lanta from Bangkok but we hadn't realised how long! First came the 12 hour overnight sleeper train which took us to Surat Thani, a public bus then took us into the town centre before we were picked up by a minibus which took us to another travel agent where we got on a big, hot, crammed bus and drove for another 3 hours to Krabi (where the driver initially wanted us to climb into a lower area with some luggage - we declined!). Here we were dropped at another travel agent before being ... read more

I had just under 4 weeks in Thailand with Kate and Jess as travel companions so we decided to cram as much in as possible and the adventure started in Thailand's crazy capital, Bangkok! Bangkok....It's brash, buzzing and a little bit bonkers with a healthy dose of inspiring and impressive culture. Our first day was a bit of a blur because Jess was jetlagged and exhausted from her trip over and Kate & I were equally exhausted from our transit from Vietnam and previous night at the airport...we took the obligatory trip to Kao San Road and scoped out the area around our guesthouse but that was about as far as we got. The following morning, our sightseeing in the sunshine began in earnest. First stop was the Grand Palace with its bright, blingy, dazzling buildings ... read more

Q: How many people can you get in a minibus in Sandakan?(Read on and find out!) I flew from Miri (Sarawak) to Kota Kinabalu (nicknamed KK), the capital of Sabah to start my exploration of the north of Borneo. KK itself is a nice little city which is easy to explore with a great night market selling freshly caught seafood in little tents right on the sea front. It is also a great jumping off point to visit Kinabalu Park and the infamous Mount Kinabalu which has broken many a traveller. I had decided I didn't want to do the 2 day climb and then risk leaving myself broken for my upcoming diving so opted to head to the park for one day and navigate some of the trails by myself instead. Again, I didn't really ... read more

I started my Borneo adventure in Kuching and even though I flew in at night, once I'd settled into the hostel and found some dinnerI already had a good feel about the place; it ended up being one of my favourite places in Borneo. Its sat right on the Sungai Sarawak and sprawls along its banks with a quaint, laid back feel. It was also the place where I first saw semi-wild orangutans swinging through the trees. Semonggah Nature Park rescues orangs from the pet trade but also has babies that have been born at the park and the orangs are free to roam but know where they can get a free meal twice a day if wanted. At sunset, I cruised along the river with friends from the hostel; it was so calming and soporific ... read more

October 29th 2011

Our new adventure to Lombok and the Gili Islands started with a 2 hour speed boat ride from Bali to Lombok. On arrival at the ferry terminal, a basket of individually wrapped seasickness tablets (soon to become known as 'pink pills') was offered around to all with a warning that they could make you sleepy and one was more than enough! I think my experiences in Oz on the racing yacht and the liveaboard dive trip cured me of any seasickness that I did have so politely declined. Once on board and on our way, the rest of the group all seemed to go into a comatose state for the next two hours with some of them only waking up as we were arriving at Lombok! We jumped off onto the beach and got all our ... read more

As with everywhere you go, I arrived at Denpasar Airport in Bali with plenty of preconceptions about what was ahead of me and nearly all of them were proved wrong...but in a good way. The first thing that hit me when I got out the airport was the crazy moped drivers (although, thankfully, metaphorically rather than literally!!); they were everywhere, fearlessly darting through all the traffic. The other thing was the relentless honking of horns from every vehicle on the road. Although I found by the end of the two weeks, it had become comforting and it sounded weird being driven from the airport in Borneo and no one honking their horn at each other!! My first couple of nights were spent in Sanur. On the second evening I met the rest of my tour group ... read more

So, after a 12 hour flight from Heathrow, the adventure began in Singapore . I had less than 3 days here so it was a bit of a whistlestop tour! I landed at 7am so in a bid to fight the jetlag, I decided the best approach was to stay busy. I wandered to Orchard Road to check it out but forgot it was only 8am so everything was shut and the place was deserted! So decided to brave public transport and get the train and bus to Singapore Zoo. Was really impressed with the zoo; really big lush, leafy enclosures which are mostly sunken and with moats so there is less need for glass and wire cages. Had a leisurely wander around there for hours before tiredness hit and by mid afternoon, I had to admit ... read more

On our second morning in Rotorua, we woke to sunshine and blue skies. Didn't really have any plans for the day, little did we know that by the end we'd have fallen out the sky at 200km an hour!! Gill went to investigate skydive options and availability and before we knew it we were booked in for our skydive and on our way to Taupo!!We arrived at the airfield a bit early and since they had room on the next jump we pretty much got kitted up and on the plane straight away. Gill had decided to jump from 12,000ft but I went for the full 15,000ft (it meant I got 15 seconds more freefall). My instructor was a chilled out kiwi called Glenn who it turned out had worked with the Red Devils in Netheravon ... read more

Kia Ora from beautiful, sunny, friendly New Zealand :) Well, I suppose I should start with how I nearly missed my shuttle bus to the airport in Melbourne on my way to New Zealand! Everything was planned, my cab was booked for 5am to take me to the bus station to catch the shuttle which would get me to the airport just after check in opens. Didn't get to bed til about midnight and before I knew it, it was 4.20am and my alarm was going off. The next thing I know its 4.58 and I'm suddenly v.v.v.v awake!!I threw my clothes on before running down to the taxi and asking if he could wait for 10 mins. Then I threw the remaining few things in my bag, brushed my teeth and legged it down to ... read more
