Seeing the city in the distance out the Greyhound coach window was a strange feeling. I hadn't been in a proper city as such in a very very long time...the smell of coffee round every corner, men in their suits and shiny shoes and the women in their chic skirts and massive sunglasses... The hostel I stayed in even promoted the modern urban city feel...apart from the few cockroaches I saw... Most of the people staying at the hostel were on working holiday visas. It made me in one way feel happy that I saved before travelling as people were stressing out at finding work, but in another way it made me look forward to when I do eventually get my working visa and actually live and work in one place in Australia... Wed. June 7. Lost momentum yesterday with cold. Laundry and long sit in pub reading and dinner. Better today. Went to 'Save our Whales' demo at harbour. Twenty boats, 500 people, media. Out front before spruik. Sold two small flags to boat owners, one from Mooloolaba passing through going north. Older crowd. Stickers good. Drove to 1770. Lots of space here. Distant mountain, sweeping bay and a pub with no loo. Public ones in park opposite. Guy said that's 1770 which seemed to mean something. Keep you posted. Thur. 8 June. Warmer night, light rain. Spruiked at 1770 headland Joseph Banks Park. Two real estate guys got a large flag each!!! Drove to Rockhampton. Newspaper interview and pic. Story Saturday - editor willing. River with yachts. Fri. 9. Awoke Yeppoon heights. Spruiked very well. Girls from ... read more

In a nut shell Scott writes: I think we have just popped out of a Purple Patch with our travelling as the last couple of weeks moving up the east coast have been so good that we have to pinch ourselves just to make sure we were actually there. In a nut shell we have ragged a 4wd Suzuki Sierra around the largest sand island for three days; went sailing on a picturesque tall ship around the Whitsunday Islands and snorkelled on it’s beautiful fringe coral reefs; completed our four day PADI Open Water Dive Course in a small town called 1770 and then finally lived aboard a dive boat in Townsville for four days, completed our PADI Advanced Open Water Dive Course, did eight dives on the Great Barrier Reef and two on the largest ... read more

It's been a long time now since I last wrote, I know. What can I say, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to these posting deals. But enough excuses, onto the trip at hand: about two months ago I took my mid-semester break to travel around Queensland for two weeks. Also, my parents had planned to come and meet me there for a week, so naturally I was doubly excited to go. Week I: Rain, rain, rain, parents, rain, rain, rain. The first week of my trip was a 5-night stay at a quaint resort in Cairns. More specifically, we stayed at Palm Cove, a small town a 40 minute drive north of Cairns. As the title would imply, it rained quite a bit for this part of the trip. A LOT. On the bright side, ... read more

Hey all! The next stop after Hervey bay and Frazer Island was Rainbow Beach. Rainbow was an unexpected but pleasant surprise... it's relaxed and beautiful... reminded me a little of Waiheke. I stayed in Rainbow from June 1 to 10 at a cool hostel called Pippies... it was the first hostel in Australia that is close to the quality of those in New Zealand. I spent most days on the beach... surfing, swimming or just enjoying the sun. I spent my birthday there... pretty low key... my friend Jodi bought me a "Canadian Breakfast"(Pancakes and maple syrup). Couple night we went up to Carlos sand blow to watch the sunset... absolutely awesome! We also brought up a boggieboard to surf down the sand... then to clean up we jumped into the pool at some swanky resort. ... read more

Ah. Just come back from giving my sinuses a workout on the Great Barrier Reef. Cool, eh? Very tiring though. I had a two hour in the middle of the day, something I rarely seem to manage. I think I left you in Airlie Beach where - it is very hot. - there are lots of very nice islands which you can sail around. It's very nice. I though that the most ironic thing about Airlie beach was that I could find no evidence of a beach, just some saltwater swimming lagoons and a marina. I mean it was probably there somewhere but I wouldn't think to name the town after it, since the main attraction of the town itself seems to be a strip full of the obligatory backpacker bars. Hmm. The sailing trip... Lovely. ... read more
