Greetings from Cairns, the best known city on the Queensland coast. A tropical, laid-back yet modern centre where anything is possible including rain, rain and more rain. Myself, Brenda and Lindsay arrived here last Tuesday (May 29th) in an effort to escape the downpours of Mission Beach. We checked into the Cairns Beach House that nite and were suckered into our "free meal" which still managed to cost me $8 for a chiken curry that looked and tasted like foul chicken in chicken broth and undercooked rice...it was a beauty. We soon perked up later that nite when our mates Anna and Jessie arrived....but they didn't stay in that hostel long as poor Jessie got bedbugs on her first nite. The first few days, the girls and I wandered around Cairns familiarising ourselves with the area ... read more

G'day possums! It feels like ages since I wrote a blog but I know it's only been about a week - time really stretches out when you're travelling! On leaving Townsville we headed to Mission Beach, a coastal town two and a half hours north that's surrounded by rainforest, banana plantations and long stretches of white sandy beaches. First impressions of the town weren't the best since it was lashing down with rain when we got there! It's definately a "beachy" town so it looked pretty dismal in the rain but Brenda and I were happy enough to settle into our hostel, cook some dinner and then head straight to bed since we were knackered from the night before. Although disappointing for sun-lover Susan, the rain was perfect for the activity we had planned for Mission ... read more

hey all, well i'll get to the having no money and coming home bit in a minute but first we thought we may as well make the most of being up here...so we went on some trips ...on subday we went to the great barrier reef!! how exciting...we went in an old pearling boat..we thought it had more character than a huge flash yacht (nothing to do with the expense!!)...we sailed out and before we knew it (after a shark spotting that turned into a dolphin..they are so similar!!)we were at our dive spot...well i just went snorkelling but you know what i mean... i started getting abit nervous when we stopped as the waves are quite big in the open ocean...but we had our snorkel talk and then we were set up with all the ... read more

Whell. i thought i would update you on our adventures on Magnetic island. what can i say? 1st of June, australias official first day of winter, temperature 28 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. we spent the whole day lying by the pool, overlooking the beach. god we have a hard life! went to a full moon party at one of the hostels - its a huge backpacker/student/local event... but doesnt quite have the fame of the Koh Pa Ngan party in Thailand... we had a huge party on our dorms patio to begin with, then we caught a bus to Base (the hostel...) and didnt get back 'till 5am. we were hardcore. we had 2 hrs sleep then had to check-out and catch a bus, then a ferry then the Greyhound from Townsville ... read more

Greetings from North Tropical Queensland, North East tip of Oz! Overview: Australia: It’s winter. Neighbous and Home and Away are lies. It’s not amazingly hot, although after SE Asia we did feel cold even when it was 30 centigrade! Things we noticed are how much cheaper petrol and food is here, the lack of integration between aboriginal people and white people - which is quite sad, and just how big this place is, we only did a small part of it and that tiny bit was as big as the UK! Fri 1st: Cairns city Arrived in Cairns 9.30am, and they had a useful tourist booth with touchscreens, free phones and the numbers of a billion tour operaters, hotels, hostels - a bit too much information for that time in the morning. So we opted for ... read more

Well the best part of a week, it was sunny this morning but we were still on the Great Barrier Reef so we missed it! it was sunny quite a lot on GBR and i loved every minute of it. i have done 11 dives in 3 days and im shattered, but no sleep tonight as we are getting the greyhound at 12.25 going to townsville and magnetic island then back on the greyhound going to be sooooo tired. whilst in Cairns we also went to Cape Tribulation which was lovely in the sun but we went up on my birthday and it rained all day and most of the night. we did a horse ride and ... read more

We made it! 4000 kms and five and a half days later we rolled into Cairns. Leaving tropical Broome, we traveled through the barren red centre before arriving in the tropical mountains of northeast Queensland. Along the way we got close to come saltwater Crocs at a crocodile farm in Wyndam and had some close calls with animals on the road in the Northern Territory. The highways in the NT have a 130 kph speed limit which is great for traveling large distances quickly, but dangerous when stray animals run in front of your car. In one morning we had a wild bore and a large feral dog run in front of our car. If it wasn’t for Clay's "Andretti-like" driving we may not have survived. Another day a giant hawk was eating road kill in ... read more

In the evening Claire & I sat on the balcony of the hostel & made friends with a lovely Irish couple. We went into our room & made friends with our six other room mates, 2 Korean guys, Veronica, a snorer from Ireland, Ross from Bury, (he went to the same school as Claire!), Odid from Israel & James from London. We all had such a laugh & Claire & I managed to get drunk & entertain everyone, I think we had both missed meeting people & we had such a good night. Saturday we spent the day recovering from our hangovers & organising our adventure down the East Coast, we booked our bus ticket to Sydney, a couple of dives on the Great Barrier Reef for Monday & relaxed around Cairns Lagoon on the ... read more
