Finally got to Australia, and it is amazing. The weather is scoarching hot, the people are really nice, they don't hassle us every two seconds to buy stuff. We stayed at a hostel called the Cavanagh which was really good, they had a nice pool to chill out in, a bar which always had people in it and nice food for a reasonable price. We all stayed in one room, we had bunk beds to sleep in which had the most uncomfortable matresses on them. We had a nice en suite with a nice shower which was better than having to wait around for other people sharing just one bathroom. Had a look around the shops and looked at some places to have meals and some drinks. We went on a bike ride one day ... read more

Well now we are in Cairns. And i LOVE it!! Its so beautiful here. The sea is right on our doorstep with a backdrop of lush green mountains. I much prefer it to Darwin. We have been here for three dyas now. We tried to get onto the OZ bus for today but left it too late. We are now booked on for Thursday and have booked a few stops after that. You all would love Cains. The average age is around 45 which would be perfect for the Orion team. The resturants all look lovely with fresh seafood and other meals. Because we are poor backpackers we stick to the free meal vouchers given to us by our hostel. I have had chill and rice for the past two days. However i have varied ... read more

Hi guys, Well we are now in Cairns which is in Queensland. Lia (a friend of ours) flew out and met us at Cairns airport which is cool. She coming around Queensland with us for 2 weeks. The first day here we didnt do much sorted ourselves out and went for a look around to see where everything was. The second day we spent the day at the lagoon which is like a manmade salt water swimming pool that they have built on the street right next to the coast. It looks amazing there is sand around the edges and grass surrounding it with palm trees so perfect for sunbathing. They built it because there isnt much of a beach here and we are not allowed in the sea off the coast because it is ... read more

5 Hours of sleep later that damn alarm went off. We have an hour to get ourselves to the shuttle pickup spot across the street. As we put on our packs to go, we happily encountered a lighter load but need to work on the placement of items as the flip flops jabbing me in the back of the head were extremely uncomfortable. It was a cool rainy morning as we stepped outside to our rendevous spot. it arrived right on time and was suprised to see how many people were already on board. It was steamed up like a Hastings Express on a wet winter day, all that was missing was the drunk in the back seat (although for some strange reason, there was the aroma of wet dog?!) Threw on my IPOD for the ... read more

Bry speaking: Plane trip from Perth was the worst so far... despite being the shortest at 4 hours. It left at 11.30pm and got in at 5ish (local time) and neither of us got a wink. Unlike SE Asia the hostels here don't open until at least 7am so we had a not so amusing dawn wait at Cairns bus depot. We still haven't adjusted to the book-ahead thing, so it took a few shots to find somewhere with a room. It's rubbish... a kitchen stocked with one mug, two flimsy plastic bowls and three tin openers - none of which work. But, it's in a great location on the Esplanade (Sea front) and reasonably priced, relitively speaking. So, after a couple of hours R&R we booked up a trip to Cape Tribulation and a ... read more

Just a quick message to say that I WILL post a blog entry once I get back to Sydney.... which will be in five days. I promise. I have just been really busy, either doing something exciting or sitting on a bus, and every moment I have had to go on the internet, the prices have been through the roof (most places are well over double the price than Sydney). So you can all look forward to a really big entry in a few days about my trip up the East coast of Oz, and how i nearly got eaten by wild crocodiles... only kidding. Speak to you all soon.... read more

Hello everyone, sorry I haven't been updating the blog very frequently, but we basically chilled out for a few days (i.e. nothing to tell really) and then have hit the old activities pretty hard for the last 10 days or so. Myself, Will and Dan are in an internet cafe at the moment sorting out a few photos and emails etc. and it's air conditioned, thank god. Dan and Will will argue that we've been really lucky with the weather but it's been a bit too hot for me, apparently it's been the driest March in decades so far, so instead of tipping it down like it did last year for Rob and Krystal up here, it's prettly much been blue skies all the way. Anyways, keep the emails coming and I'll try to reply when ... read more

Here we are back down under and continuing the adventure in our much loved van Irvine. We really have developed something of an unhealthy attachment to this 23 year old Nissan Urvan ( hence the startlingly imaginative name Irvine! ) but he has served us particularly well over the past 4 years. I have a suspicion that if Em had to choose between me and the van then I might be shown the door. We finally flew back to Oz on the 25th of February through the ever inefficient Heathrow and straight into Sydney after an unscheduled 5 hour holiday in Hong Kong airport. Thankfully we were greeted by fabulous sunshine and the ever beautiful city itself, not to mention the ever beautiful residents. This truly is an uplifting city to visit and sipping coffee in ... read more

After a night celebrating our success in the Magnums table quiz we were back on the ferry to Townsville and shortly after that on a bus back to Cairns. The journey back up was fine and we were soon back in the hostel. Pat and some of the other regulars from our previous visits decided to give us a proper send off. First though we treated ourselves to that very Australian delicacy - Kangaroo steaks from Woolworths. They were delicious if we do say so ourselves. After a few drinks on the fire escape, we headed to the local Irish Pub (Although there seems an endless number of them in Cairns) - P.J O Briens. Something tells me P.J hasn't been running this chain for quite a while as it doesn't feel exactly Irish. That night ... read more

Well we had one night in Cairns when we got back. This is perhaps the shortest blog entry of the entire trip so far but we felt the night deserved a mention. After getting back to the hostel we met up witth Pat and the crew at the hostel again and decided what better way to celebrate our homecoming (We had been away 4 nights) than a night out. Nights out in the hostel generally involve the beer garden or fire escape as it's known in layman terms before heading to Gilligans (No change there then). We had arranged to meet up with people we had met in Cape Tribulation and as usual were running about an hour late. Failing to find them in Gilligans we headed straight to the next obvious choice in town - ... read more
