We woke up dark and ealry to catch our plane taking us from Alice Springs to Cairns. Alice Springs is a 5 hour drive from Uluru - we thought the drive would further our knowlege of the Red Center. Aside from a Kangaroo that was crossing the road in front of our car, it pretty much confirmed that there really is not much out there! It was Easter Sunday in Alice Springs so there really wasn't much happening. We spent a few hours walking along the main streets and decided to head to the airport. Landing in Cairns was like arriving in Hawaii. Upon deboarding the plane via stairs down to the tarmack and we were instantly hit with the tropical, humid air. We checked into our hostel and booked a snorkel trip to the ... read more

Well this is going to be a quick entry. I'm here at the Cairns airport w/ 8min left on the internet card...anyways, Cairns was beautiful! All I can say is that the Great Barrier Reef is the most AMAZING thing I have EVER seen in my whole entire life. I bought a CD of the day so that includes the pictures of the day plus 100 of the best pictures over the years. There really are no words to describe how amazing it was. Pictures don't do it justice either. It was just...breathtaking. The colors of the coral were out of this world, the fish were just FREAKING COOL, and we saw SHARKS!!!! That was cool. Even though they were just reef sharks, it was still awesome. Also saw TURTLES!!!!! AMAZING. Just. AMAZING. I"ll post pictures ... read more

So more pictures for you's to look at if u can't be bothered to read. I do tend to ramble on, but anyhow where was, yes leaving kroombit and heading to canarvon gorge. This was another long bus ride, but at canarvon gorge we would be meeting the bus that was doing the same but were south bound. And pete had warned us that they are usually a bunch of losers, but how can such a loose statement be so true, well really there was only 1 in there group that was and had to feel really sorry for the rest of them having to put up with him for 2 weeks (and he was an ozzie from SA though). but won't waste my time on him. The accomodation there was erm somewhat interesting, but ... read more

Today we took a road trip to Kurnada about a 45 minute drive up into the mountains inland from Cairns. We stopped at Rainforest Station Wildlife Park. We saw dingos, koalas, kangaroos, and wallabys. The scariest animal was a 5m croc called Jack-The-Ripper so named because he killed his last 12 mates, needless to say he has his own cage! I was wondering why it took them so long to separate him? Kuranda is a tourist town with many shops along the main street and a weekend market . This is where you can catch a train or a tram down the mountainside. The train was not running due to a mudslide. We did hike down Barren River Falls Park to the lookout. This 1.3 km return walk is excellent as it takes you through ... read more

Finally in CairnsJosephine Fleetwood New words to our vocabulary: Saltie: Salt water crocodile Cut lunch: Sandwiches We've finally arrived in Trinity Beach which is located about 25 km north of Cairns. All four of our flights were uneventful, the way we like our flights to be. Our first flight was from Victoria to Vancouver with a 3 hour layover. Then we had a 2 1/2 hour flight to San Francisco for a 4 1/2 hour layover. We were both looking forward to our layover in SFO because it gave us the opportunity to have dinner with my Aunt Elaine and Jesus who drove up from Santa Cruz. The time spent on our layover went very quickly; it was a great visit! I have pictures but the internet cafe that we are at doesn't have the USB ... read more

The outback ranch experience was awesome!!!! I had the best, most exhilirating horseride that I have had for a long time! Only 3 of us out of the whole group were experienced riders so the leader Jackaroo took us on a fun ride before mustering the goats. Before we headed off he asked us all if we were all sure we wanted to go on this part of the ride as it was a 'dangerous ride', I went with it but wandered what the hell I had got myself into- after all its been a while since I rode properly. So off we went staight into a full on gallop though the dust and trees that lined the majorly huge farmland. We skidded to a halt as we reached a hill edge, the horses scrambled ... read more

So where to start, has been a while and a lot has happened, but I've spent the last 2 hours putting up photo's, so may break it up a bit. But a good plce to start would be yesterday, when I got woken by the news that a possible tsunami could be heading for Cairns, so had to jump out of bed, still had time for a shave, but no shower as we had to head upto the 4th floor of the hostel we're at. But nothing happened, and then it just rained for the rest of the day. Am staying at Gilligans in Cairns at the moment, has been called a flashpackes and is really nice, really good facilities. Now I will go back to the start from leaving Sydney, well the night before ... read more

On mum's birthday we take a 4 hour plane journey up north and arrive at our destination Cairns. We're greeted by a lovely Scottish lad and Canadian lad who i think take great delight in revealing to us that the Canadian was moved out of his earlier room due to a rat infestation!! mmm nice! The hostel didn't really get that much better from that point on, Michelle wasn't much impressed by the 'ghostbuster' cleaners who woke her up each morning, all the staff seemed to have an attitude problem despite the fact that they did no work and we were both unimpressed by the ants that attacked our food and the little thieves who nicked our chocolate bars!! Thats right, we now have to cook for oursevles as the budget kicks in - its like ... read more

Travel Map from Victoria, B. C., Canada, to Sydney AustraliaJosephine Fleetwood Spending the day at Palm Beach, which is just a bit North of Trinity beach. It is absolutly beautiful here! A lot more touristy than the beach we are staying at, but very nice and family oriented. We stopped and chatted with the life guards about the saltie caught on the inside of the swimming net... they said it was as much as a surprise for them too, especially the size ( 3meters or almost 10 feet.) They said, with a shrug, they rarely get salties that size, they're usually about 1 1/2 meters. That size of saltie would still be a concern for me. Walked out to the jetty just in time to see a man pull up a tiger shark about 2 1/2 ... read more
